these are very cool/expensive cars that were imported for lincon mercury in the 70s, the only weak point on them is the gearbox/ transaxel this IRS rear is not made for burnouts -its stupid, this car was made to do 170 plus some, give it to a kid and they want to just smoke the tires dude!!
@eclypse3d I can't swear by the year (may have been later than '72) but I can remember for some reason Detomaso could no longer source 351's from the U.S and Ford Australia had quite a stock pile, so they were at some point coming from Aust.
@PeterHBne1 Ah ok I think I get it the Dearborn Mich. production run ended after 72, and supplies stopped after 74. I am pretty sure they still labeled it 351C for some reason (maybe just design?? someone will need to check that). I know the 351C was technically a "medium" block not really a small or big block engine. Also the only one that could be machined to accept 4 bolt mains if it came 2V......
the car is not unstable, this idiot was just trying to make this burnout as dramatic as possible. now he just looks out of control.. the car stopped spinning from power at 0:09.
I thought it was gonna get away from you there for a moment. Easy, easy....
If you like to hear/see short clip of a 392 breathing thru quad IDA's with factory 180 degree exhaust system, go to:- Pantera Grp4 and turn up the sound.
These and the brycklens have to be the best stock cars on the road when you get behind the 351 cleveland or 429 thunderjet or cobra / boss thats raw power
how many of these were built and what were the model years. Interesting that Ford had a rear engine car other than the GT40. I love the new Ford GT's but this seems like it could be a cheaper substitute LOL. Car has very nice lines.
@westy44cal From what I can find, there were about 7200 made. There are an estimated 1500 still remaining in the world. I happen to be a lucky owner of one of the 1500 remaining. They had a Ford 351 Cleveland engine and a 5 speed transmission. 4 wheel independent suspension and 4 wheel disc brakes. Whats amazing about that is these were made from 1970 to 1974.
@motojeff That's a low survival rate..1500 out 7200? Wonder why. Thanks for the info. I wonder if anyone dropped a 427BB in or maybe a 5.4L GT500 with a 4.0L KB. Now that would be nasty!!
@westy44cal Think mid 70's GM oversized doors and mid 90's Pontiac snap on plastic construction. That's not even close to the method of construction for the Pantera but it's a visual most can relate too. Can't deny the coolness of having one because it would be a cool piece. Lots of power with all the weight in the car to provide traction. I worked for and was raised around one of the last true radiator shops in Kansas and I can say that the radiator is one place where money was spent
@westy44cal these were made until 1993, yet once past the '74 model year, they were much rarer since they stopped official importation into the US in '74. The last of the models used a naturally aspirated Mustang 5.0 engine mildly modified to about 300 horsepower, which seems strange considering there were so many power-adders available in the 90's. The early years were sort of a Ford product, but after '74, they were purely De Tomaso's own car, even though he still used Ford engines.
Yes indeed. ....and when the 351C supply stopped in the USA, de Tomaso found a source in far off Australia where they love V8's & Pantera's. The story goes they cast thicker blocks for use in trucks creating a heavier but much stronger 351 Cleveland bottom-end to go with the wonderful; big port, big valve, closed-chambered "squish" heads that led the way & was unvincible in the early 70's. But these days, I must say a Ford Windsor 427, 550bhp crate motor sounds awfully tempting..
@Danny7930 if youre still in control you aint fast enough.if youre neighbors have'nt complained youre not fast enough.if you dont scare the fastest jap crap youre not fast enough.when fast motorcycles are deep in youre mirror and you are scared and you are sweating, thinking why did i do that.youre close.now take it to youre local track and race it.then you will see the truth.fast is not what you thought it is.
@speedermarto italian sportscar and v12 might be synonymous, but a standard pantera never had anything else than ford v-8. plus it was designed by an american ;-)
@speedermarto No not maybe in Eu thay may be but from my understanding all the way up to 1991 these were Ford powered never a V12..... 351's and I think 302's near the end of the run..
