it seems like she's saying that the concept of marriage is two fold one being a ceremony/sacrement and the other based on the description of the video being a legal doctrine...she's saying leave the ceremony/sacrement for those who define it in a traditional sense--maybe instead of marriage we should use civil unions for tax purposes rather than marriage...
It's sad bc as a blk les u don't understand that marriage affords couples rights and benefits for themselves and their families. Benefits in homeownership, health, and taxes. A union or commitment ceremony has no legal benefits. Your entitled to your opinions however but research and understand that you are essentially stating that u feel gays are not meant to have rights and benefits. Only marriage ....not a civil ceremony or union will give gays benefits. I'm pro same sex marriage.
your comparisons are lame...that has to do with specific races and/or religions...marriage is supposed to be for ALL! therefore regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation..we SHOULD all have the right to marry. maybe you want to live in the dark ages and you are filled with self hate..but not everyone is as spineless and backwards as yourself. you're entitled to your opinion and that's all it is really.
Apply this same arguments to civil rights. Just because some right is restricted to one specific group by definition at one point in time does not mean it must be set that way for all time.
but, just for the sake of argument,do you think interracial couples should be married or just have civil unions? interracial couples got all the same rights as same color couples but they wanted it to be called marriage.
(find the reason interracial couples wanted marriage and not civil unions and you will find the reason gay couples dont want civil unions)
@westafrican girl Well, surely if the partnership is 'same sex' than it can't by definition be the same as a heterosexual marriage, anyway! So there should still be a civil partnership.
Tell me: What institution is like marriage? Civil Unions are not extending the same rights. Also, you get a marriage license from a state. The Constitution wasn't made for blacks, but it doesn't mean that it doesn't apply to black Americans. Or Latinos, Italians. etc. Many churches can and do marry same sex couples in their churches. I find your logic problematic
Are you uneducated,Gay marriage was around before religion. The damn church stole it from us.Also Civil union makes us second class citizens. NO..........No...NO.....NO..
@iphonefetish lol what are you talking about? gay marriage has never been around. actually gay was a form of fetish in ancient rome. it was socially acceptable for a married man(married to a woman) to have a "boyfriend"/sextoy to fulfill some of his desires. It's only in modern culture that gay marriage is even an issue...marriage was intended for a man and a woman.
@reziboy100 No, Some of the Emperors of Roman were married to men. and other people. They did not think of people as straight or gay. it was bisexual and gay/lesbian.
@iphonefetish well that's interesting. I didn't know that. thanks for sharing that...I want to look that up though. I've always read about the emperors having wives. If you could point me in the right direction, that'd be cool.
@reziboy100 I will have to find it again. i did it for a research project and paper and it was hard to find because of the fact that people try and cover stuff like that up. all i can say is google it. and go to google scolar.
I agree with you 200%...my beautiful black african goddess!!! marriage is just not for me, sr8t or gay!! A piece of paper isn't gonna defy how more or less I love my significant other. we're not asking to redefine marriage marriage is the union of two people who love eachother, it was never defined as a man and a woman a husband and a wife adam and eve were brother and sister

@salamace7 you do know that people can say that communism is supposed to protect the people since the people share ownership in government? no one can say that democracy is supposed to protect the people... government is supposed to protect the majority
Okay, no offense, but from the perspective of a straight black sister who has friends in the LGBT community; why can't the sister have her own opinion? Is there an underline rule in the LGBT community that states that everyone has to have the same opinion regarding issues? There is a butch co-worker of mine who shares the same point of view as the woman in this video and often gets bashed for it too. I mean I ain't tryna step on anyone's toes; so please educate if I am missing something.
If marriage is only religious union with a ceremony in church or something similar, you have to recall civil marriages when you want to be consequent. Because now when you aren't religios and don't have a ceremony in church people call it still marriage, although it doesn't fit in your definition. So if that is your opinion you have to fight that every nonreligious couple (homo- and heterosexual) "only" is allowed to have a civil union.
no she is not. she was even wrong to quote the "bar mitzvah".
first of all, its BAT mitzvah because its a girl.
Secondly, her daughter would be entitled to have a batz mitvah if 1. she converts to judaism OR 2. she has a jewish racial/heritage OR 3. She marries a Jew
so that anti-Gay marriage coming from a Lesbian is very poorly argued.
Marriage is a human right, NOT a heterosexual privilege only to be DISGRACED by 50% divorce rate. Civil Marriage is not a religious ceremony, its a legal agreement between two consenting adults who wish to share a life together---WITHOUT the pressure of a family or children.
You can have a BAT mitzvah---if you convert to Judaism accept that faith. Or if your daughter raised in the Jewish faith or has jewish bloodline. Either of those choices would qualify her for a BAT mitzvah. .
This woman is confused as a red neck with 3 teeth. What does making gay marriage legal have to do with whether or not she gets married? Clearly her background in less progressive cultures has made her homophobic, otherwise she wouldn't be complacent with a homophobic society. She needs to get her head on "straight," so to speak, and replace that Liberian flag with a rainbow one.
Why, because she's a 'sister' expressing her point of view? Calling her background less progressive is offensive as hell to me, as Black sister. No offense, but referring to her background in that manner sounds discriminatory. I mean, hell, I'm half Jamaican (which is a very homophobic culture) and straight and still embrace the LGBT community; to a point of continuing to speak to my 3rd cousin who is gay when the rest of our Jamaican family calls him a 'bati boy.' So, what's your point?
Her background is less progressive--she made that point herself. Her mistake comes in letting some misplaced nationalism supersede the importance of gay rights. No one is saying anyone should have to enter a traditional relationship that is united by marriage, but everyone deserves the right.
And, as I said, I am straight and have supported the LGBT community alot; to a point of my other Jamaican relatives 'going off on me' about it. But, to me, I feel that everyone's shit stinks; so I do not join their perspective (in terms of my family's homophobia.)
i am confuse. i feel no matter wat gender u r LOVE is LOVE regardless da gender of da person u share ur LOVE wit. i jus feel lik u should be openly happy wit da person u give ur heart to and not have to hide it n anyway, jus commenting no disrespect intended.
im not coming from that angle mr darkbison7. she said- ****personally**** marriage is not for HER- **YET** if a gay person chooses to then good for them- in a nutshell. and Absolutly i think for her to even speak out on it knowing that her opnion will warrent alot of miscontruing of her words- as u have and plenty of hatemail. i applaud that. It speaks alot about her character as a SKrong black african lesbian.
like i said again, mr darkbison7 i dont think the govmnt should have a say i think we should do as we please as consenting adults when it comes to love.
Women don't have Bar Mitzvahs, they have Bat Mitzvahs. Why aren't Bar/Bat Mitzvahs meant for black people? If they choose to be Jewish can't they have one?
That's find if you don't think gay marriage is for you just as long as you don't want other gay people to be married because you don't think it's for them either.
she is not "making sure" ALL GAYS, (at that) will ever get married..ur brain is like..picking and choosing what it wants to hear..smh..this is a touchy subject but you have to understand the opposing view instead of letting ur ego distort your critical thinking.

If you are a woman, then u cannot have a "wife". When a man marrys a woman, he referrs to her as his wife.
In order to have a wife, there must be a husband.
There cannot be two wives, or two husbands.
its like a voter calling a man his "congresswoman".
or a person calling thier daughter a cowboy.
It may make you feel good saying it and you might actually believe it, but its still not valid in society.
Why the need to change such an important union in order to fit your lifestyle choices?
