It's sad bc as a blk les u don't understand that marriage affords couples rights and benefits for themselves and their families. Benefits in homeownership, health, and taxes. A union or commitment ceremony has no legal benefits. Tell me: What institution is like marriage? Civil Unions are not extending the same rights. Also, you get a marriage license from a state. The Constitution wasn't made for blacks, but it doesn't mean that it doesn't apply to black Americans. Or Latinos, Italians. etc. Many churches can and do marry same sex couples in their churches. In order to have a wife, there must be a husband.

If marriage is only religious union with a ceremony in church or something similar, you have to recall civil marriages when you want to be consequent. Because now when you aren't religios and don't have a ceremony in church people call it still marriage, although it doesn't fit in your definition. So if that is your opinion you have to fight that every nonreligious couple (homo- and heterosexual) "only" is allowed to have a civil union.
