@TexasFilmCritic Slumdog Millionaire was a terrific piece of filmmaking too; really, that was the only movie in the 5 nominated films that year that I thought deserved to be there. The Dark Knight should have as well, especially ahead of movies like The Reader...or even the good (but overhyped) Frost/Nixon.
I honestly think this may be one of the greatest movies of all time...It plays upon our fundamental fears about morality to an almost primal, unprecedented extent...It takes cliche and knocks it on its ass and turns it upside down until it's unrecognizable...Ledger's performance is indescribable and should be recognized with the academy award, although all performances are Oscar worthy, they're that good... I am still haunted by this film...
dunno if it's the quality of my speakers but that punch in the interrogation room sounded so hard my head feels like it's been knocked off everytime I rewind it to that place
It has no rivals. Too damn brilliant, Nolan's work is a masterpiece, the Academy must consider it.
And I retain it should win Best Director, Best score, Best cinematography and Photography. I wouldn't give awards to actors, not because I don't like Ledger's performance, but I think all the main characters have been GREAT!
I agree, Hollywood and critics consider films like Slumdog Millionare underdog films. The Dark Knight is the True underdog because its films like this that dont get any recognition for Best Picture Oscar. The best movie I've seen in recent years and there won't be another one like it.
2:10 to 2:23 sums up the Dark Knight almost perfectly. It's not about the battle between two people but between two ideologies. Idealism vs. Cynicism. Even though the two beliefs are different, the people who hold those beliefs can sometimes be almost indistinguishable from one another. And because this is delivered so subtly, The Dark Knight is the best movie of the year.
And the Joker's comment on panic during 0:50-1:00 might be a subtle comment on the clash of the classes.
DC and Warner Brothers don't know what they are doing, I saw the Dark Knight on DVD, IT SUCKED. Well not Heath he carried that movie, next to the Batman with a frog in his throught. Anyone who thinks that a Superman reboot is nessasary compared to the Dark Knight you are first stupid, and second crazy. I am sticking to Marvel, and as Robert Downey JR said, FUCK DC!!!!
The thing with this movie is that audiences and critics around the world agree it is so good it transcends comic book movies, as well as the rivalry between marvel and dc. Oh and Downey's comments about the Dark Knight were just low class.
Amazing movie..one of the best yet i hope theres more just like this to come. what a sick movie..brilliant,amazing,chilling, and violent..awesome movie.. its ashame Heath Ledger cant be here to see what a masterpiece hes made. RIP HEATH LEDGER
Yeah... All I've been thinking ever since seeing it is that Heath would just be dumbfounded by the accolades this movie's gotten, let alone it's popularity, especially of his Joker!
If it doesn't win at the Oscars, at least we know by now it'll be a huge cult classic.
Every word said was completely true. I'm more than happy to say The Dark Knight is one of the best movies I've ever seen, let alone the best movie of 2008! I support it 100% for best picture, and I hope Heath Ledger wins best supporting actor at the Oscars too.
oh god, that song is "Like a dog chasing cars", my fav score !!!! This movie really deserves an Oscar ! Best picture, Best supporting actor & Best script !!!
I like this well put together! I believe it will be nominated for best picture, it has too much buzz and critical acclaim to be ignored. As to whether it will win that is another question, but its got a chance!
I love it when people talk about overhype and the like. Seen many lesser quality films get awards in years past. This should win awards, and it deserves awards. Which ones, is a different story.
Actually, the best are those that only use CGI when necessary. In cases like The Dark Knight, little is needed so little is used, but in The Lord of the Rings... well, the amount of CGI in films such as those don't diminish the value is what I'm saying.
Best Actor (Christian Bale because really, playing Batman, Bruce Wayne as a playboy and Bruce as the tortured soul is a hard thing to do, and Bale does it beautifully.)
Best Supporting Actor (Heath Ledger should get it of course... but Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart should also be nominated since they did just a good of a job as Ledger did. They were all equally fantastic!)
That is right! Return of the King was fantasy and a sequel which the Academy is usually biased against. It also was critically acclaimed in addition to breaking box office records the same as Dark Knight.
This was the first movie I saw that I actually went and saw again two days later. This movie keeps you in it for over two hours and doesn't let you go until you realize the credits have been rolling.
This is my favorite movie of all time, however, we all know how biased the Academy is against super hero movies, even though it would be an insult to call it that. At least we'll know that if TDK at least doesn't get nominated, then no super hero movie ever will.
god this film is so incredibly overrated. yeah its a very well made and constructed movie. "but it's dark [which for some reason is seen as being original] and ledger is amazing!"i disagree. this film is little more than a mish mash of Heat[a superior piece of film imho]and the crow [which is actually darker]. the conception of the idea that some people just want to watch the world burn was done in the crow which came out 5 years after burtons original batman feature.
i wasn't comparing the themes of the two films in question at all. i was merely trying to explain that stylistically they ARE very similar. lees make up in the crow didn't even cross my mind. but hey i think my point is more valid now than it ever was as you yourself noticed the similarity in the make up!?
"can't see TDK NOT getting a nomination for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor. If it doesn't, something is very wrong with Hollywood."
I can't see TDK NOT getting a nomination for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor. If it doesn't, something is very wrong with Hollywood.
a masterpiece; this emotionally driven and suspenseful crime epic is dark and certifiably complex, but not entirely cynical. transcending its often derided genre, the dark knight succeeds not only as a powerful and moving multifaceted motion picture, but also as a testament to the relevancy of an american icon (and his greatest villain) in today's world.
And on a side note - you said you gave the movie an 8/10 - which is actually pretty good! So I don't get why you're picking on all these little things. No film is ever perfect.
I have a poster of the film and I paid to go and see it twice - once in IMAX. I followed the film campaign since its beginning. I'll be buying the DVD when it's released. I criticise it... because no-one else will.
Now, how about we campaign for David Fincher to direct the third? Anyone? No? Have you seen Se7en!?
50% of Heath possibly getting the Oscar is because he's dead? That's NOT true. He'll get the Oscar because he DESERVES it. That performance was absolutely mind blowing!
I've seen a lot of Heath's films - he was okay in a few, some of them he was good, some of them he was terrific (Brokeback, Candy, Monster's Ball). TDK was one of the terrific ones he did. He is not recognisable as HL in TDK.
I agree that Ledger's performance was convincing and powerful - probably the best part of the movie. But his death definitely gives him a big, big advantage and he'd never get an Oscar if he wasn't dead. Also, Maggie G's face is in the same movie and that makes him look great by comparison.
Also, it's the make-up and the hair that make him unrecognisable. In the ten seconds you see of him w/o make-up I was like, "Yup, Heath Ledger alright."
I'm not complaining that it's not perfect, I'm complaining because it's not nearly as good as people say it is. And yes, Heath will get the Oscar. At least 50% of why that is is because he's dead. That's also responsible for 20% of TDK's metacritic score and 50% of its takings.
Compare it to say, No Country For Old Men or Changeling and you quickly realise how worthy it is for an Oscar.
Now, four thumbs down for the last comment. I reckon maybe twenty for this. More perhaps.

The Dark Knight is so overrated. It's not a bad movie by any means, don't get me wrong. However, it suffers from too many noticeable flaws, too many lulls and too much structural integrity to be considered more than, say, 8/10. Just as good as Begins. The difference? Begins didn't have a hugely popular villain played by a guy who is now dead.
Don't even get me started on those shitty, needless boat scenes. I will laugh if it wins the Oscars, but I won't actively back it.
Sorry, that should be oddities in structure, not "too much structural integrity". Though that does bring us to how thoroughly conventional it can be when it really doesn't need to be.
Count me in (great video). The first movie I have ever seen twice at the cinema. As a lifelong Batman fan it was everything I wanted and more. I hope The Dark Knight is racks 'em up (!) at the Oscars as it deserves to be for the acting (Heath Ledger RIP) and the final product...The Dark Knight, Best Picture.
25 years from now, this film will be put in the congressional film vault for historic importance.

The Dark Knight ? Still remembered to this day. Not just because it was a Batman film. Because it was also an AMAZING film. Period.
