no ! there is an harmonic sense to his playing. He developed a concept : Symmetric Movement Concept. My friend is learning bits of it and shit she sounds crazy now ! (she's 19)
Can you tell me what your friend has studied (books, video, web pages...)?
I'm studing "Harmonic Experience" by W.A.Mathieu, it's a new kind of studing harmony for me and I didn't found something that talks about this system in italian language (I'm Italian...what an effort!!!)..I'm looking for something that talk about the music of Ornette Coleman because I can't understand this kind of playing..
sorry I don't think Ornette Coleman really has a concept except to play the exact same way that he feels. Actually I didn't talk to her on how she is learning it. I am learning the beginning of his essays on his own site. w w w . m - b a s e . c o m / s y m m e t r i c a l _ m o v e m e n t . h t m l.
Ornette did develop a system its called "harmolodics", and it's really hard to explain. He's never written a book about it or anything, apparently he just explains it to his band members. There's a pretty good explanation of it in the book Ornette Coleman: His Life and Music.. It's not by Ornette himself, but it's a pretty good interpretation.
It's probably best to listen to the actual melody/sequence (2 2 2 3 2 3 2 3 2 2 3) which the singer is laying down real tight she evens starts to mess with it (or that's it's another cell/sequence/melody).
that drummer's going through a trying time with the form (there is a drum part of 2 3 2 2 3 2 2 2 3 2 2 3 that repeats)... he's trying though. the other sax player...what's he doing? not playing anything related to the melody or the form. LISTENING is key, especially when one is not familiar with form.
Actually, AVhemmorage, the form is (4 7 5 7 7 2 3), then it repeats in reverse.
Doesn't matter in the end as my band has transcended beyond all that technical shit. We head straight for the fringe and stay there. Check out my vids and you'll see why most folks agree, I've got the best jazz on youtube!
For those who are not paying attention, this is not atonal and it clearly has form. Steve Coleman is of the few that will be considered relevant 100 years from now and is not originally from the loosely coined "golden jazz period."
Oh, I'm sorry. Did I suggest that I was detracting from Steve Coleman's accomplishments; was that implicit in what I said? Well, if that's what I meant, please accept my apology.
the truth is that there is a lack of steves videos down here... hes a real giant sax monster (with "a"). this is whats happening right now. i dont mean you have to like it, but i think we all jazz fans should try to get what hes playing.

Is there some books or documents that explain how is possible play in this way?
oh, here in italy there's nobody who explain this kind of improvisation/composition...

If this is what is happening right now, what would you call Ornette Coleman's music? How 'far' have we 'progressed'? Ornette was a genius.
rmwaller 4 years ago
Obviously you have been aiding the progression. We all appreciate the service you provide the music community. Hypocrite.

it is for sure not random notes, he was super imposing other chords into the original harmony and also playing poly rhythmically.
