@twoslices Dionnw Warwickk, good call!! I have a CD of most of their numbers, and in their later songs (after they slipped out of the charts) she could almost be Dionne, and musically they were at a far higher level than her old style. Quite why her star rose and fell so quickly ..... I can only guess that they heralded the bubble-gum pop sound soon to be perfected like bands like "Middle of the Road" and somehow the emerging Polly Browne style got swept under.

I'm afraid so and it is an embarrassment. We even had b&w in 1974!!! For some time there was arguing weather to use PAL or NTSC and eventually they decided to go for PAL and subsequently we got colour tv in late 1974.
In 1970 this song made me feel unaccountably wistful for an 11 year old.
Quatt47 Great story - thanks for sharing that. I commented elsewhere that Polly seemed to "fit" this song - both vocally (the Warwick comparison is spot-on) and in her personality; it's as if she were predestined to have this song written for her.
I used to be a resident musician at the Garrick Club in Leigh, Lancs from 1968 to 1972. All the top acts played there and Pickettywitch did a week with us when I had to share a dressing room with Polly Brown.(!) (We had three really tiny dresing rooms and seven acts a nigt to squeeze in). They were a really top class act and sounded just like the records. Magnificent. Pity they didn't really make it as big as they should.
A neat song that was a semi hit in the spring of 1970. As for the guy, I don't think he was gay. It was just the times and he looks as if he was trying to imitate Polly Brown. Kind of cool to hear a song that I haven't heard in at least 35 years.
lol my dad lent his beatles twist and shout vinyl to his mate and when he gave it back this song was in the cover for the beatles one so his mate tricked him and he still has this LP now god...
I picked up the 45rpm record of this song in 1971, when I was in the US Navy stationed in Holy Loch/Dunoon, Scotland. Great song with nice soft voice of the female singer. On the flip side was "Maybe we've been loving too long." Pye records London, England.
Wow I always thought Polly Brown was black! Up In A Puff Of Smoke was a semi hit for her in 1975 here in the states. She sounds so much like Diana Ross's replacement in The Supremes Jean Terrell. So much that Polly could've pulled off singing Stoned Love and no one may have noticed it wasn't Jean.
errrrrr...is the guy next to polly brown for real? he's doing all the routine like a fucking queer. why hasn't he stood behind polly and left the focus on her? he spoils this video (although it's rather grainy anyway). i think polly went to the states. she was a great singer with looks to match. great memories of great days. thanks oztvagogo.
Wowee !. Thanks for posting that. I would have been age 14 in 1970. Hearing the song now, it is as fresh in my mind as if I'd just heard it yesterday.
No. After the original Pickettywich disbanded, a new band New Pickettywich was formed with singer Sheila Rossall who reportedly suffered total allergy syndrome. Rossall died in 2006.
The guy in the left background with the long blond hair is alive and kicking and living in the UK and I have had the good fortune to have met him recently.
I wanted a belt like that soooo bad, and my Mum wouldn't get me one (she was not cool at all) - I loved the "big pennies" dangling from them! Great song, and dance routine :) No-one has mentioned yet that Polly Brown had a hit with an Abba cover, "Honey Honey" as part of the duo Sweet Dreams in 1974?
I'm a British girl of the early 70s LOL I live in New York now, but trust me, I'm still Scottish! I'm a little young to remember this when it came out, but I used to love "Jimmy Saville's Old Record Club"; made some great discoveries there :)
In yesterday's comment, in regard to 'Flower Garden' by Nick Lampe, I overlooked to mention that he may soon have another song released, which should hit number 1.
I also like For The Love Of Him, by Bobbi Martin, and Blame It On The Pony Express, by Johnny Johnson and his Bandwagon.
My Favorite from 1970 is Flower Garden, by Nick Lampe, an obscure song which appears to have flopped everywhere else but where I live, in Melbourne, Australia. There is a video of him singing it on Youtube. Don't miss it.
My all-time favorite is Right On The Tip Of My Tongue, by Brenda and the Tabulations, also on Youtube
omg, I remember watching this as a 6 year old in New Zealand. She must be in her 60s? Never thought Id see it again. For some reason it had a huge impact on me.
I have been looking for this song forever!!! My brother had the scratched up old 45. Whatever happened to the members? Did they go on to do other things? Did they release an LP? Just one hit wonders? Thanks for posting this, it's RAD!!!
Wow this is a rarity!!! Pickettywitch- they didn't get proper airplay. A beautiful song and a treat to see them actually singing it. Now if someone would post a Vid of Alive & Kickin doing "Tighter & Tighter" my day would be complete.
fantastic dance routine, flicking the heads in unison. I can just about remember this song but it sounds great, some how reminds me of happier care free times
Yep talent and success don't always go together (see also Colin Blunstone, Julianne Regan, Jo O Meara). By contrast look at how many hits Emma Bunton has had.
Had to look this up today, the man from Pickettywitch is on The Weakest Link! Sadly, I remember the song when it came out and think I've got the single somewhere in the loft!
same here, i just saw one of the members on the weakest link...i used to love this song...can't make out tho by this video which one he is...the song still sounds great!
The first cut by this band I ever heard was "It's Like A Sad Old Time Movie," which I just heard about five minutes ago on the best internet radio station currently in existence, Luxuria Music. I can't believe I'm the first person to post that Polly's singing is nearly a carbon copy of Dionne Warwick's style. I'd love to play in a DW tribute with her singing lead. She sounds nothing like Dusty Springfield but does sound exactly like Dionne.
I have listened to this song for years now and you just made me realise that she does indeed sound quite similar to Dionne Warwick. Once it is pointed out it is hard to imagine how anyone could not see it?
OzTVAgogo, I found someone before me who posted a few months ago under another Pickettywitch song regarding the resemblance to Dionne. Many under 40 - at least here in America - have no idea of who Burt Bacharach and/or Hal David are and that Dionne was around long before Arista and Barry Manilow resurrected her career in the early 1980's. I think it helps to know Dionne's early songs to make the connection between her style back then and the lead singer of Pickettywitch.
Oh yes I'm familiar with Dionne's 60's recordings as I have many albums, EP's and singles from her...it's just that I had never made the connection to Polly Brown's vocal style probably due to not hearing Pickettywitch to often. I should play the LP more..if I can find it :)
This record only reached #67 in the US in the summer of 1970 but hit #5 in the UK earlier that spring. A competing version by The Fortunes bombed in the UK but stole some of Pickettywitch's thunder in the US, reaching #67.
very sad to hear of the illness she suffered with - the smile this song put on my face over the past 35 years, and I still do the drum roll on the car wheel hopefully made her efforts wothwhile.
She was supposed to be suffering from "Total Allergy Syndrome" it was in the newspapers 25 odd years ago. I also remember it being announced that Jimmy Savile was going to marry someone from the band- was it her? Then there was the more recent Rick Wakeman revelation on the BBC tv show "Never mind the Buzzcocks" which someone should post up as it's supposed to be a classic-I have only seen a transcript on the net.
I don't think so. My recollection is Ronson had already teamed up with Bowie before the date shown on this video. Maybe a Google search can confirm who was the guitarist in this band.
Right, this one has gone straight into my favourites. I seem to remember Polly Brown had a similar problem to Tony Burrows of Edison Lighthouse (ie simultaneous appearances on TOTP).
Wow ! what a rare clip. Very little archive footage exists of Polly Brown / Pickettywitch, so it's a real treat to see this. I have a clip of her singing 'Baby I Won't Let You Down'. Thanks for the posting.
This is past amazing. My girlfriend at that time made me buy this 45RPM single for her. I was already into Zeppelin and wasn't impressed by this song, but seeing and hearing it almost 40 years later brings back great memories. A wonderful pop tune with some great harmonies. Applause from Las Vegas to OzTvAgogo for uploading this clip.
Lokk at Polly here!!! WOW so beautiful. Here voice smokey, silky and divine. Polly had many releases as a solo performer. 7 or 8 on the GTO label that all scored at the very lower end of the charts. 'Your'e My Number One' being a particular favourite of mine (There was even a 12" of this in the USA. Checkout Rorymc on the web. I think he is promoting her now. If you see the picture then you will see just how good she is. If anyone manages to contact her - just tell her I love her OK!!!
Yep...and look at those contestants on (insert your country here) IDOL...there is no comparrison. She was a very beautiful girl in her day with a beautiful voice.
Do you think they would have been bigger if they had put the single on their album? I think it was a huge mistake to leave it off.
Thanks for adding this - I loved Polly Brown! It was actually the lead singer of the "New Pickettywitch" that suffered from total allergy syndrome. her name was Shiela somthing or the other. Polly Brown went onto a solo career but don't know ehre she is now
It was Sheila Rossal of New Pickettywitch who suffered from--and sadly died a few months ago of--so-called "20th Century Allergy". Polly Brown is still around and still performing (she had a Top 40 hit in America with "Up In A Puff of Smoke" on GTO America [pressed and distributed by ABC-Dunhill])
Yummy Polly. Where is she now?

I'll have to try and dig the old LP out as the cover of that featured a map with Pickettywitch located on it...BUT I don't know how old that map was.

Wow! It's Polly's style that does it for me, particularly love the belt on that dress... this is what the Spice Girls wanted to be...

Wow! I'd never even heard of Polly Brown until yesterday - and now I'm in love with her!

Voices fine by me. A good fun song. But what is with the attempts at Rock n Roll dancing by the two out front. Rather grotesque.

She was supposed to be suffering from "Total Allergy Syndrome" it was in the newspapers 25 odd years ago. I also remember it being announced that Jimmy Savile was going to marry someone from the band- was it her? Then there was the more recent Rick Wakeman revelation on the BBC tv show "Never mind the Buzzcocks" which someone should post up as it's supposed to be a classic-I have only seen a transcript on the net.

can anyone tell me, is that Mick Ronson playing guitar?
mrjoebloggs 4 years ago
I don't think so. My recollection is Ronson had already teamed up with Bowie before the date shown on this video. Maybe a Google search can confirm who was the guitarist in this band.

I remember this one : fantastic

Right, this one has gone straight into my favourites. I seem to remember Polly Brown had a similar problem to Tony Burrows of Edison Lighthouse (ie simultaneous appearances on TOTP).

Wow ! what a rare clip. Very little archive footage exists of Polly Brown / Pickettywitch, so it's a real treat to see this. I have a clip of her singing 'Baby I Won't Let You Down'. Thanks for the posting.

I would be really interested in seing a clip of Polly Brown singing 'Baby I won't Let You Down', one of my favorite tracks by her.

If anyone manages to contact her - just tell her I love her OK!!!

polly brown should have had a bigger career than she did, with her voice
walesone 4 years ago
Yep...and look at those contestants on (insert your country here) IDOL...there is no comparrison. She was a very beautiful girl in her day with a beautiful voice.
Do you think they would have been bigger if they had put the single on their album? I think it was a huge mistake to leave it off.

Thanks for adding this - I loved Polly Brown! It was actually the lead singer of the "New Pickettywitch" that suffered from total allergy syndrome. her name was Shiela somthing or the other. Polly Brown went onto a solo career but don't know ehre she is now
stephenhad 4 years ago
It was Sheila Rossal of New Pickettywitch who suffered from--and sadly died a few months ago of--so-called "20th Century Allergy". Polly Brown is still around and still performing (she had a Top 40 hit in America with "Up In A Puff of Smoke" on GTO America [pressed and distributed by ABC-Dunhill])
