looking at the number of walls, I'd say that it was a way for those in power to keep control over their people, it was not so much about protection from outsiders, but to control trade, and punish the undesirables or those that fought the system in the country --to their deaths.this made an example of them and put the fear into the majority to follow the laws of the empire or else.oh I'm sure the people thought that it was to secure the land, but there was much more to it.

i really dont understand what those emperor are thinking about. Every emperor from different dynasty built the wall and let their citizen suffer. They should spent the money and time to train an elite group of army that can fight the enemy off. They should also find ways to improve their armor and equipment. Furthermore they should treat their ppl well and increase their morale. But, they let their citizen suffer for so many years and depend on a pile of rock. (i am a chinese too)

They always chose the wall because it's actually effective. The cost of the wall is much smaller than long-lasting wars with barbarians. You can hardly defeat them because they can easily flee and reappear anywhere at the border. An alarm and defense system is really needed for such a long border.

The great wall served their defensive strategy very well prior to the advent of the powerful fire arms. Even today military concrete bunkers ( another form of wall?) are built to shelter protection.

You need to be in the Emperors' shoes to know why they did so!

The Qing dynasty pretty much fucked everything up. The barbaric Manchu rulers did not allow for much technological or cultural developement, The Manchus put China into a dark age while the West went through a total renaissance. China's fall started with the fall of the Ming as foreigners(Manchu, British, Japanese, American) came and ruled.

Sure they faced humiliation at the hands of foreigners, but it's not like it hasn't happened before. I see the events at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century as a readjustment to a new world view - a slightly difficult adjustment maybe, but far from disastrous.

we did use guns, the ming dynasty forces were the first in east asia to use european canon on mass scale. our problem is peace, we had to much peace and we spent our money on builting palaces and manufacturing silk, fine china, and iron, and thus the military and the nation failed to put their focus on constantly upgrading weaponry, we held peace too dearly, and we payed a lot for that.

Rephrase if you do not understand what I meant: China loved peace but was robbed all the time. Chinese like new ideas like Tang Dynasty when it welcomes good trade between China and Europe. Well, those Northern Barbarians later all become part of Chinese group. Well, there are actually way more than 56 tribes in China. The Han tribe is composed of many different tribes. It is the Manchu tribe that headed the government and forced Europeans to kneel down and looked down Western technology. However, because of Manchu's bad management and ignorance, most non-Manchu Chinese suffered for teh past few centuries. Again, China loves peace but robbed all the time. China is pity!

Thank you for posting. The preservation needs continuing and massive efforts by each generation of Chinese. What is urgent now is to gain the Chinese public's awareness of the Great Wall's historical significance for it actually penetrate over 2000 years of Chinese history. It deserves to be systematically protected for generations to come learn their ancestors ' struggling and prosperity, for worldwide visitors daunted by its distinctiveness to understand some of Chinese culture and values.
