  • D12-3?

  • Ahhh the good ol days of building and launching esties rockets.

  • throttle up.seems to be a major malfunction at 27 nautical miles up.please stand bye.

  • NIce rocket! Excellent flight, I just got back into model rockets after someone gave one to my son. Just up and decided to put it together one day and actually launch it as opposed to using it as a static model.

  • launch @ 0:58

  • rockets ftw

  • Great video. Anyone notice the crescent Moon as the rocket took flight? Nice. Unplanned I'm sure, but very fitting.

  • I just want to slap that fat kid!!

  • Nice shorts dude, lol that was early 90's!!!

  • god 1993. back when people could go to the park without being sued or arrested.

  • wow this vid was made b4 i was born

  • @NEL0061 Wow... me too. I was born in 2003.

  • Lol today in my science class one of my friends rockets hit a car behind us

  • me and one of my friends are doing this in our science class and we're a bit behind but hopefully well catch up!

  • highly doubt it

  • I have a 42 ft rocket i built myself by hand

  • Gonna get one of these soon! Gonna get the SuperNeon XL also. I also have 16 other Estes rockets.

  • That looks AWESOME!!! were did you pick a Saturn V up at??!!

  • 0:56 to save time

  • Man does this bring back memories! I use to modify those little rockets so the big E engines would fit and I'd use toilet paper sometimes for wadding and it caught a field on fire once. lol

  • how dose it work? and how high did it go.

  • Aww...you should have let the kid launch it. That's the first rule in rockets and kids...you build it...they launch it..you both get it.

    Nice rocket anyway!

  • Now that is a classic video! Great job guys!

  • 1993 this was made! in 1993 i was in year 3, i probably looked like that little kid in the blue pants, wait that is me! Holy crap thats my dad! WTF?

  • Comment removed

  • found a place in orlando Florida that still sells this rocket!,.. I think for 85$

  • @thunderbirdT33 A lot of places :D

  • Chute failure killed my Saturn V

  • Do these use hydrogen or just some other kind of compressed gas?

  • @tjbayliss

Solid Fuel engines, more reliable and safe than real rockets that use Liquid Oxygen and hydrogen...

  • I got one of these in 1999 for the 30th aniversary of Apollo 11. I flew it twice and retired it. :-) Both flights on an E motor. A bit safer. The LUNAR rocket club had quite a few Saturn Vs that day. I wish I had video of that day.

  • '

this place forest tree is not good for model rocket,,,

best place is the desert as a dry lake for model rocket

  • no offence but uwere supposed to say 3 2 1

    but nice vid

  • Man 1993. So long ago, it is even scary to think about it.

  • i see these at wal mart along with rocket cars

  • if you get a new one convert it to F power

  • nice rocket

  • I made my own rockets. they all broke. most had no recovery system. I tried springs but that went somewhere far and was unable to analyze things. the one with a parachute did not deploy due to it being too tight on there. I made a new one with a parachute. I loosened it and put a D engine in it. I will test it soon.

  • damn, let the kid push the launch for christ sakes....what is it about model rockets that makes a 50 y.o. regress to a 5 y.o. Oh wait, I've done the same thing! :-)

  • this 17 year old video would have turned viral if it all happened alittle differently at 1:30

  • my teacher has a cooler one of that i think(we launch rockets in 6th grade) THATS THIS YEAR!!!!!!!IM GETTING MEAN MACHINE!!!!!!!!!!!ITS 6 FT. 7 INCH!!!!!!!!

  • Cool

  • ahhhhhh....1993. The good old days before our country went down the shiter Nice vid. Thanks!

  • I just bought a new estes rocket today and it uses 3 e engines and it has 3 fases. It can go to 2660 feet!

  • Cool!

  • that was awesome

@nudeanaglyphs ino they just acting kool

  • Very kewl! I have one of these still boxed in my basement I want to build.

  • All we need for this 90's video is for Bill Nye to show us how it launched.

  • estes rockets rule

  • Spandex shorts belong only on women unless your gay LOL

  • 1993 buddy, get a grip.

  • I thought it was gay back then too!

  • it Sep-Er-Rate-Ed

  • 1:11

  • What's at 1:11?

  • oh, those were the years!! early 90's...

  • You know I've been looking into these model rockets and I never knew they could be so cheap! Even the ones that are equipped with cameras. :-D

    Phil from FABAOtv ;-P

  • Is it me or do they really stand too close to the launch station...

  • I love the way one of the guy's on 1:13 says "it SEPERATED!" He really emphasises the word lol.

    Phil from FABAOtv

  • shut the fuck up

  • are they related to ned flanders? they catch the thing when it landed.

mine went miles away into trees, woods, corn fields, neighbors yards,(angry) rarely to be found.

  • Ahhh <3 the simpsons reference

  • WOW!

  • Estes makes great model rocket kits. And that looked like a B or a cluster of A's.

  • Actually if it's the kit from the late 80s, my best friend had it. It had a D in it.

  • i know it waznt high at all

  • Who the fuck do think you are, its just a kid. I would love to kick your ass

  • 1. Learn how to spell

    2. If you don't like it, why did you watch it

  • nice!!

  • Its a fake! The blades of grass aren't moving yet there seems to be a breeze carrying the parachutes. Also, there's no way to fit 3 parachutes in the rocket. Just kidding folks! Just making fun of the wackos out there.

  • just because the wind is light or calm at ground level, doesn't mean it's that way at, say, 30, 50,70, or 90+ feet up. You can have a light breeze at ground to 15-20 feet, but have wind as high as 30-40mph above that. I know because we had freestyle motocross riders in Pottstown this summer and that's exactly the way it was. The were working to keep their bikes inline with the landing ramp.

  • lol 0:10 thats what she said

  • that was cool, perfect!! what is the height on that? (been launching these small ones that go 1200 ft can see them that high )

  • this was filme on may 23rd 1993

  • Wow this was less than a month before I was born :D

  • I used to fly estes rockets in the early 90s, I should put one of my old videos of our launches into my channel.

  • rockets r fun dont no why ppl think its nerdy

  • @iTzBboyBRian as people get older, rockets are only cool when they blow shit up.

  • @iTzBboyBRian the only reason people think its nerdy is because the people that call u that are failures ate school and will endup working at mcdonalds

  • @iTzBboyBRian i know you put alot of effort into it and you get an outcome that is totally effing awesome

  • Why estes stopped to produce this kit???

  • so they can re-release it at inflated prices

  • Nice; the Apollo moon rocket is one of the most beautiful stacks ever designed. I'd like to build this model with a working LES, abort the main launch and have the LES pull the Command Module to safety as the main rocket explodes.

  • Somebody telling someone else on the internet what they should've done 16 years ago, which was very minimal.

    Right.

  • Well, yeah ... but maybe rephrase that not to be personal -- say people watching this now should try to do things differently. Kids do not understand danger, one of mine ran out to a live launchpad, and it is easy to get rushed with distractions like ... kids running around.

  • I just got a far side, and sky dart rockets from wally world for about $30 and i got just 3 engines for the bigger one and 4 fore the smaller one. they look like paper towel rolls lol. Imma launch 'em tomorrow if there's low wind. we have a huge field and live like 1/2 mile from town so hopefully won't break when launching.

  • You can buy these models everywhere! They allow you to launch them because they come with about 3 to 5 of the engines that you light on fire, and *BAM* They lift off! This is for all of you wondering =P..

  • WHOA NICE. I really want to build this one.

  • Whose the sweet thing in the bike shorts.....

    BLeeeeeeeeech!

  • Definatly not illegal

  • Actually Estes was making this fine rocket with its "cluster" technology as far back as 81

  • Are these things illegal? I have one and am just wondering if they are. (Newer este rocket btw made in like 2003 or something_

  • In some states you can't use solid fuel or man made fuel. Do some research.

  • not illegal, but you need to be in an open area and have a parachute in it. it's just to minimize property damage.

  • Back in 1988 I built from scratch the same saturn V and used 4x D12-3's .....but it came crashing down due to only 3 engines igniting instead of 4........bummer!

  • sweet biker shorts

  • Heh, was that the version of the Saturn V that had a mini camera that shot on Kodak 110 film? ;) The neighbor that introduced me to model rockets had one of those, it snapped a picture at the top of ascent before the ejection charge blew the 'chutes...

  • Estes didn't come out with a Saturn V version with a camera (that I know of). Are you thinking of the Astrocam? That used 110 film.

  • @nudeanaglyphs ya i got that one and the saturn v

  • that's great!

  • Thanks for the vintage video, can't find that rocket any more!

  • Can you please tell me how to make an easy igniter for a rocket engine as i'm trying to make a rocket car

  • a match

  • that doesnt work, there is cork protecting the powder.

  • i was being sarcastic

  • the smaller rockets are better because they go higher and faster with even the smallest engines but still cool looking rocket

  • i kno its weak but i have no where to launch it i live in delaware the biggest field i got is banning park

  • i have the brand new flash with a c6-5 engine it can go 1000 ft

  • 1000 fts weak... hell i lit the commanche 3 a couple years back 2500 ft... i made a rocket thats just a e9-6 motor with a nosecone and extended fins for stability... not quite sure how high it went but it was higher than the comanche

  • how high did it exactly go?

  • Not that high on a D engine. I'd guess about 100 feet.

  • not bad at all. i have an alpha 3 it goes 1000 ft lol

  • but for something that must weigh a tonne and was built in the 90's that was awesome. you should check out this movie called october sky. its about rockets

  • @nudeanaglyphs

A 'D' engine is a serious thing. Are you sure it had a D in it, and not a B?

  • @nudeanaglyphs really cuz i launhed a rocket with a b engine and it went like 400 feet

  • @nudeanaglyphs yeah that thing is damn heavy

  • estes is the freking BEST

  • how many times can you shoot each rocket if it is made from cardboard???

  • it last as long as you get engins or the amount of times you crash it! they last long!

  • EPIC i love model rockets/ships

  • ironicly you can see the moon in the background, almost made it :)

  • I knew the moon landing was a fake!

  • Great !! I built same one... NEVER launched.

  • lol, anmerican rocket technology.. china and intia will win this competition. ?

  • lol looks like apollo 13, didn't quite make it to the moon

  • this was nothing to gr8 but it was OK

  • where did you but that rocket i totally want one!!!!?

  • I bought that one back in '92. Estes has since discontinued the kit, although you can find them once in a while on eBay. There are also other third party companies that make Saturn V kits.

  • You can order a Saturn V from Apogee components' website.

  • they have started to make them again:)

  • 5...4...3-

I think your mosquito got swatted!!

    LOLZ

  • I lant rockets all the time dont respond yo this

  • Great job! Sorry get got destroyed though.

  • how did it get destroyed?(plz reply)

  • It was windy when I launched it, so I leaned the launch rod into the wind a bit. Problem is, the Saturn V is so top heavy that it just arced and nose dived into the ground before the parachute could save it :-(

Always launch these straight up, no matter how windy it is.

  • the saturn v is sweet!!!

  • going up with the model rocket?

  • I just bought an original un-assembled kit from the early 70's. I have always wanted this thing since I was a little kid.

  • Whats a good engine if u want it to go up 1400+?

  • the c6-7 rocket engine will reach 1500 feet but if u hae a larger rocke u can use any of the D engines

  • F-1

  • mine started on fire mid air

  • i found one about 3 months ago at a yardsale that was based on the space shuttle discovery

  • i bought one about a year back that was a model titan rocket and bought one like the saturn in this video off of ebay.

  • the porty pot shot was always a craapy rocket... I JUST MADE A JOKE!

  • wtf?

  • cool

  • That was a great flight!

  • i build estes rockets too.but i've never saw that one.where did you get it?please respond!!!!

  • I got it back in '92 or '93. Estes had re-released the kit that year and then discontinued it again. I'm sure you can still find it on eBay.

  • Sadly the rockets produced by Estes today are a shadow of the selection they were in the late 80s early 90s.

Saturn V, Mercury Redstone, Shuttle, Shuttle with SRB/Tank and the shuttle gliding back down (sometimes, other times, nose cone melted an dit was a challenger style disaster)

  • "Booo! No explosion!"

  • used to have that one until it landen in the road and got run over. Its heavy but it flew nice

  • lol

  • Here's a vote for big and slow model rockets. This Saturn V is a good example, and Estes' Big Bertha was a great example! The low-speed liftoffs enhance the rocket engine sound (you hear more of it). Plus, it's easier to see the launch (the rocket stays just slow enough for it to be able to be easily seen); the ascent scalewise more closly resembles a real-time NASA rocket liftoff. Finally, the slow ones don't go so high and far away, making them easier to find after they return to Earth.

  • The problem with these big rockets is they go relatively low, much lower than a smaller rocket using the same engine...

They don't go too far to find easily though, so that is always nice.

They go up too slow for me, I would rather have an A rocket modified to take C engines, than a big E or F rocket. Thats just me though.

    Nice rocket, good launch.

  • very nice launch and a good job in building it.

  • Wow cool! That was a great video

when those parachutes came out I thought the rocket caught fire when I 1st saw it happen

  • that was cool. I wish they made model rockets with like 5 stages. THAT would be cool.

  • Good job and nice flight gang! My Estes Saturn V flew great with AEROTECH AP reload motors...that is once I got it balanced out and the right delay in the motor..I sure did have a couple of hard landings with it at first!

  • The moon in the "background" is a cool shot for this rocket. Nice job.

  • Great visual catch! Timbo, you have the eyes of a hawk.

  • PERFECT!!! Mine crashed when the engines didn't ignite at the same time... I rebuilt the engine tube for one D-engine, and it launched fine. Then I retired it. Thanks!

  • wOw, I've never seen a Saturn V Rocket made by Estes...I'd love to have one of those.

  • Got to eBay and search for "estes saturn"

  • I have one of those rockets still in the box - never built the darn thing - still 100 % new - so glad to see one fly -;o)

    I hear its a collectable

  • ahhh good ol 1993 fashions lol

  • This was the crème de lacrème of rockets. One of the largest, skill level 5 (back in my day), and beautiful. I never found one of these in the stores, but did find a Pershing 1A Missile, a sister rockets at the time, and built it in the 8th grade. I only launched it once, very scary but came back intact. It now sits in the attic preserved.

  • had a friend who buildt the Sat 5 Estes .... but he's a doc now hmmm.. Best I did was the V-2.. launched it and never saw it again...

  • Ok in that case you were OK! MY bad! i still have the scar from standing too close! My comment was NOT meant as a neg but just as a warning. Great launch btw

  • Thanks. So, tell us the story of your scar. What happened!

  • Nice view of the cresent moon in the background following ejection! I've built

    about six 1/100 scale Saturn - V's since 1969;

    always got to love them!

  • Six? Wow! That video was of my third. My first one I build in 1972 (I was eleven). I have a fourth, half built, collecting dust in a garage. I'll finish it one of these days! :-)

  • i wish my flight where as succseful as that

but i guese i dont use kit rockets

i use home made boats and home made rockets to test out

  • Hell ya. I've made rockets out of toilet paper rolls! You gotta video tape them, man. Even the disasters are entertaining!

  • I once plugged the igniter into the motor too hard, and it held the rocket down on the launch pad, melted a hole in the pad, almost started a fire. Finally the rocket took off, flew about 10ft in the air, landed on the ground and then the chute popped a second later.

  • Nice. You need to stand back futher! You are way to close to the launch! I still have the scar from standing too close!

  • From that 2-D perspective, it's hard to tell how far away I was. I was standing standing away from the rocket the full length of the ignition wires (25-30 ft.).

  • cool rocket lok at mine on my channel "fastmax94"
