The idea of the cover comes from "The Animal Farm" ... a good source. What a pity that Clash prefered rather the Communist symbols than Orwell's visions
You're aware Orwell was a socialist who fought in the Spanish Civil War with the Marxist POUM, right? Animal Farm is not criticizing 'communism', it's criticising the ways the Bolsheviks tried to implement socialism in Russia. Like most leftists, he was a critic of the USSR for betraying the revolution. Read 'Homage to Catalonia', and you'll see "Orwell's vision" was a socialist one.
I think even though Orwell was a socialist most true conservatives hold him in high regard if for no other reason than ANIMAL FARM is a tale of why limited government is best. Its not at all at odds w/ the libertarian philosophy if you think about it.
Most conservatives like to spin his words to mean an overall anti-communist message, but he was opposed to Marxist-Leninism (authoritarian socialism), not communism in general. "Libertarian" at that point in history was synonomous with anarcho-communist and anarcho-syndicalist; In some places, it still is. Animal Farm, and Orwell's beliefes in general, are completely at odds with what is now known as "libertarianism". The message is that socialism must come from below, not be imposed from above.
But notice that after the war Orwell got mature and became the British agent whose activity was against the USSR. The next thing is that Stalin sentenced him to death already during the civil war. You don't know the reality of ex-socialist countries and can not understand Orwell's writing as it should be ... Communism is the same regime or even worse as fascism.
Um, what? Your ass is not an accurate source for information. Stalin wasn't a 'communist', he wasn't even a 'socialist'. The Soviet Union was state-capitalist, as in the state owned the means of production. Socialism is when the workers own the means of production. Communism is stateless, classless socialism. The USSR worked against the anarchists and Marxists in Spain, for they feared a TRUE socialist revolution would take place in the USSR. Fascism is on the other end of the political spectrum
My ass you say? I hope you don't wear capitalist products like Fred Perry, Doc Martens, Lonesdale, etc. as a real communist? My last explanation for all naive red ideas' followers from western countries: rasism - white man good, black man bad; communism - poor man good, rich man bad.
Neds Atomic Dustbin, not quite in the same league as The Clash! I saw them live in Bristol a long time back, they were good and Godfodder is a great Album! Saw The Clash in Bristol too, they were awesome!!
Animal Farm by george orwell a great book-- not just a great cover . joe sure had good taste in reading matter , think he turned a lot of us on to reading relevant and important stuff !! good old joe r.i.p.---
There's a bit of punk ehtos in that book. Its about being able to identify hypocrisy & bullshit when you see it. If you don't call it out then you'll end up like the horse "boxer."
rather than flash your "awesome knowledge" around, how about can it. Enjoy the music and know that we're all fucking equal, who cares who knows what. Music like this brings people together mate.
@Thrashslashedmashedp If you go back and read I was just responding to a claim that the original was "Ska" instead of Reggae. Atomic is the one who started saying I was "fucking full of shit". Sorry but I do not like to see people spreading innacuracies around the internet.
can a blue man sing the whites? the clash were so amazing. I love the original, too, when it plays behind Jimmy Cliff in the harder they come. I also prefer the cover to the original; even I Fought the Law. and I loved bobby fuller, but ...back in the day the US didn't have EP's, and that black market clash 10 inch was one of my longtime favorite party discs. Wish we had a music scene now as fantastic as the UK had decades ago. damn I miss great music like this.
One of the very few covers that I like better than the original. That was until that overplayed car commercial. Now Toots reigns supreme again! HA. In all seriousness though, great song and great cover!
I'd consider the original one ska not reggae. Most of the Maytalks stuff is ska. The Clash version rocks, but it's not very different from the original. I don't know how you can like one and not the other. I also don't see how you can fully appreciate the Clash without liking at least some ska and reggae since that's some of their main influences.
The original was my favorite song when Gerald Ford was still president. I saw the movie several times a month during 1975-6 at the Orson Welles theater where it *opened* when my mom's boyfriend worked there, and I founded the very first Skinhead Reggay band in the US in 1990. I know the difference between Ska, Rock Steady, Reggay and Reggae. Don't try to lecture me on something you know only a little about.
@atomic116090 Reading over your comment again I realize that you aren't getting what I mean when I say "Skinhead Reggay". I mean "Trojan Reggae", not Skinheads playing Reggae. Not everyone in Mr Cranky was a Skinhead; Some of us were punks, skunks and herberts. Most of us were in our mid 20's and "retired" to a sloppy post-skinhead scruffy Herbert mode.
Get this through your head: "Skinhead Reggay" and "Trojan Reggae" are the same thing. "Trojan Ska" is something completely different.
@Murple333 The difference is this is a faster and rougher, less melodic version of the original, hence I like it better. But hey, the original kicks ass too!
As far as I know, it wasn't featured on an album, only released as a single and later included on various collections, including the Clash on Broadway.
There are two versions of this song which are different mixes of the same session. This one is the single, and the other was on the original (not "Super") Black Market Clash EP. This is the good one.
