  • I bought this last Friday. In my luck it's lens was broken or something. It works but it makes sound when it's in auto focus. Like snap, snap, grrr, ghhh. It's annoying. :(

  • @TheJakooz lmfao, snap snap grr ghhh!!???? ahahaha xD i hope it gets fixed bro :D

  • cant wait to do this ^^

  • im currently saving up to get a D5100, it will be my first DSLR. cant wait ^.^

  • Reviewer fail.. I love that part.

  • I'm holding this baby in my hands right now. My mother sold her jewelry for this as my 18th birthday present. I am really just a beginner, but this camera works so well on everything, in my opinion. I'm doing photos for my mom, everytime she asks me, and she's so proud that she bought me that camera, she really believes in me to be a successful photographer one day. :) I love you, mom. <3

  • I'm not sure if you even still read these comments, but if you do, can you measure the box and please get back to me. Yes? Thanks!

  • @Justsomeperson660 I don't have access to the box, so I can't measure it. That's one of the weirdest requests I've ever receieved. :-) I'm curious to know why you're asking...

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia Well, I think someone may have gotten me this for Christmas this year. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Great unboxing video by the way!

  • Is the Viewfinder good?

  • Why does this video have no like and no dislikes? And has like 140 thousand views????

  • An unboxing video where the person knows what he's talking about? And who pays more attention the the product than to the actual packaging? THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!!

  • @BassistNumber2587 I'm deeply sorry for breaking all the rules of unboxing. ;-)

    - Jason

  • @BassistNumber2587 hahaha omg im dying HAHAHA!

  • tou know the battery charger? if u dont have that type of plug socket can u just buy new batteries instead? :)

  • what kinda usb cable do i need to hook the camera up to my laptop? im assuming its mini USB or is it propitiatory?

  • hey does it come with a USB connecter?

  • what is the shutter's maximum number of exposures of this camera? thanks!

  • @hannahgrade No clue. But I'd say that by the time you outgrow this camera it will still have plenty of shutter actuations left. If I were to guess, 100K.

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia 100k shots? would that be more than enough? because i've been planning to buy a camera that would really last for a very long time. thanks for answering though.

  • @hannahgrade 100K is a lot of photos. Most people don't take 100,000 photos in their entire life. Also, it won't break at 100K, it's just created to do that many (or whatever the number is).

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia ok. thanks.

  • Just wondering, do you NEED a lense with this camera to make it work?

  • @Funnnnmusic That's like asking if you need tire on a car to make it drive. Yes. :-)

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia Hahaha sorry as you can tell I know nothing about camera's xD Thanks for answering though!

  • does a memory card come with it?

  • @BmxLadd No, it does not.

  • I dont know why others cant make there videos look as good as this one ..Im subscribing !

  • does this camera have good battery life? and does it come with a battery charger?

  • @LITHskatefilms96 Yes, he says it in the video. Battery charger included. Can take about 1000 pictures per battery charged, I am guessing. Heard that somewhere.

  • It's good review. If you have got a SD Card and some picture it was a better :)

  • @RakunLander He has a SD Card in part two.

  • uhm, i dont know if you have noticed but that lense doesn't come "for free" with the camera. The camera is cheaper with just the body

  • @ps3psnps3 At the time I did this video, a year ago, you couldn't buy the D3100 body only. Kit lenses are so cheap though, I always recommend people buy the body + kit lens. If you want to resell the camera later, it's much easier to sell with a kit lens (I know this from personal experience).

    - Jason

  • @ScOoTeRoOtEr12 I'm deciding between this and the older D3000 but for my budget I might just get the D3000 but I'm also open for any advice. Should I just get the D3100 instead for $100 more or is the D3000 good enough for me?

  • dude, Which is more good the CANON EOS 1100 OR NIKON D3100

  • @DeathwishxxXify Cannon is for shooting vids, everything else go with Nikon. Nikon is more user friendly, it shows you how to use it in different settings and much cheaper.

  • @dookiekong007 in our country the canon is much more cheaper, theeir difference is about $100. I dont know what I'm getting this Christmas, so confused.

  • how many shutter actuations does it have? please answer my question. thanks :D

  • I'm about to buy my first DSLR camera. Would you recommend this camera for a beginner?

  • @trillo1301 I just got my first DSLR camera as a christmas present, Nikon D3100. I think it is great and you learn to use it very quickly ;)!

  • @trillo1301 i would recommend the nikon d5100, it's much better than the 3100 but that not much more expensive.

  • @trillo1301 it is perfect for a beginner because I've got to buy me one too (I'm Italian sorry for bad english)

  • @ScOoTeRoOtEr12 Yes, though it doesn't always work very well. :-(

    - Jason

  • @ScOoTeRoOtEr12 It's a photography shooting bench/cyc.

    - Jason

  • Are you recording on a chair?

  • @mrcarlopadipadilla No, that's a photography shooting bench. I replaced it with a bigger one earlier this year; my new one is a video cyc.

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia I'm a newbie into this and really confused about all the Nikon models. So currently what is the newest Nikon model? and from this video, I see that you had bought the D5000 before this D3100 so does that mean the D5000 is older than the D3100? so does the number matter at all?

  • @dookiekong007 Can I suggest you to to Nikon's Web site and do some reading? It will help. :-)

    - Jason

  • I'm deciding between this and the older D3000 but for my budget I might just get the D3000 but I'm also open for any advice. Should I just get the D3100 instead for $100 more or is the D3000 good enough for me?

  • This or the Canon 1100D ?

  • I think u need to charge the battery first

  • which one is great for beginners? nikon d3100 or canon 500d? thanks!

  • @strepthroatcoccus nikon d3100.. :D

  • @thezackyv2 but does this camera won't get easily outdated? which is better? the APS-C sensor of the canon or the DX Format sensor of the Nikon? thank you so much. :D

  • I love this camera!

  • ok im pretty positive i'll get another battery charger, cuz of the pluggers (or whatever you call them) We have other sockets here in Holland, so that means i do get all the wires *sigh*

  • Would have been nice if you knew more about this camera than I did! It is true that I'm looking to beg, buy or steal (from my savings account) my first DSLR and have been drooling over the d3100 for several months now. Just trying to figure out to break the news to my wife that I want a $700 USD camera!

  • @bobcrothers I'm not sure why you feel the need to insult me, but please check out my full review video - my unboxing videos are merely first impressions videos...I haven't used the product when I shoot these videos.

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia So you think I'm a total nincompute? Well, in the photography world, I am! And then I go and insult one of those who could help me. Not real smart was it? So Jason, please accept my apologies. That is NOT what I was intending to do. It didn't dawn on me that "un boxing" is the first time you've laid eyes on the D3100.

  • @ThoughtsMedia I sure didn't mean to come across that way. I'm a newbie and the last thing I want to do is insult the "pro"s! So please accept my humble apology.

  • @bobcrothers Apology accepted. :-)

    - Jason

  • @bobcrothers $700 isnt alot, u can always sell it later on for $500 or more with lens

  • @bobcrothers tell her that this camera is absolutely awesome. i am having it for 3 months now & it is worth much more than you originally pay for...good luck with your purchase..

  • D3100 or canon 550D

    help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Benedictninja d3100 imho

  • @Benedictninja should be d3100 or 1100d since 550D is too tough a competitor for the d3100

  • dood SLOW DOWN TALKING TO FAST

  • Nice Review. Keep it up dude.

  • do u have to buy an sd card it does not come with the camera

  • @genoblaster1 yah, the SD card has to be purchased separately. It doesn't come with the camera. I would suggest a Transcend class 10 SDHC card for maximum performance and space.

  • my box was some kind of box with an acme bag and a book... d photo kit. :D

  • Hi, I was wondering, where was this manufactured? Japan, China?...

    Thanks

    lol

  • @thedragoonknight I believe it's Thailand, but I don't have it in front of me right now. That's where my D300 was made. :-)

    - Jason

  • I'm slowly melting at wanting one of these ._.

  • In terms of American Dollars, how much did you pay for it? Because I am buying it. I am paying $779.99 for the bundle. It includes: --The body camera --A 18-55mm lens and 55-200mm lens --A battery with the charger --Camera Strap --4GB Memory Card --And a Camera bag that can store all of the equipment included For me, It sounds like an awesome deal! All I need to buy is a tripod for an additional $30.00 or less.
  • @aliceherbst this camera is brilliant...and you can still get it...it is in the new Argos catalogue ;)

  • i would like to buy a camera like tht but i dont know any new ones (updated version) or gds one that have come out now in 2011 . so if u wouldnt mind helpin me by tellin me some ideas on cameras and thngs :)

  • i would like to ask if the video of thii cam is the same as the d5000 resolution

  • @bentequatro18 No, the D5000 maxed out at 720p, and the D3100 is 1080p.

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia ah i see. and also can this cam can adjust the same resolution of the d5000?

  • @bentequatro18 You mean can you shoot in 720p on the D3100? I think so - I don't have mine in front of me right now, but I'm 99% sure it can.

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia yeah.. if it can shoot like the d5000? im planning to make an independent music videos.

  • @bentequatro18 Why would you want to record at 720p if you could record at 1080p instead...?

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia Haha

  • @ThoughtsMedia Because sometimes when you use a high resolution video, the Audio can't keep up with the video.

  • @winerts That won't happen with this camera, but if you're doing anything serious, you probably want separately recorded audio anyway...

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia Also Because it is 24fps and 720p has 30fps.

  • @ThoughtsMedia PS: I like the question! Good question!

  • @bentequatro18 wtf, you can shoot better than the d5000.

  • I'm shooting mostly macro like flowers but also landscapes and people. Pretty big variety of stuff that I'm shooting. Mostly like landmarks and stuff (beaches, places ex niagara falls). Thanks!

  • @EpicPBChick It's hard to find one lens to do all that. You could do most of it with the Nikkor 18-200mm lens, though it's not a macro lens. You might need a dedicated macro lens for that type of shooting.

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia Okay thanks! Do you have one of those that you can make a test video with? :P

  • @EpicPBChick I do have the 18-200mm lens, but I don't review lenses. If you're looking for a video shot with the 18-200mm lens on the D3100, look at the thoughtsmediaEXTRAS channel (search for it) and look at the video of the camel that I shot.

    - Jason

  • whats a good lens for this camera? thanks alot.

  • @EpicPBChick "Good" is a relative term. What are you shooting?

    - Jason

  • nikon d3100 or sony hx9v or sony hx100? (in terms of video quality) plz reply :)

  • were is the e in Nikon?

  • @botswi There's an "e" in "pedantic". You should look it up. :-)

    - Jason

  • @rosso2500 I've never reviewed a Canon DSLR, so I can't offer you an opinion on that.

    - Jason

  • i love this camera :)

  • when you say it comes with software, what kind of software does this kit come with and what is it for/what does it do?

  • @jaasmin77 I don't recall the exact software, but it's always terrible. Usually something pretty awful from Arcsoft. You're far better off with free tools such as Picasa or Windows Live Gallery.

    - Jason

  • Hi m8, thanks for the video. Just one question, are you happy with this camera? I mean when you compare it with the d5000, which one would choose?

If you could go back in time, would you still prior the d3100 over the d5000?

    Best regards, Mahmoud

  • Comment removed

  • @realmuddiboy Yes, I'm happy with it. I find the video to be much more usable than what came on the D5000, so I'm glad I have the D3100. I wouldn't trade it for a D5000. Now, a D5100, that's another story... :-)

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia Okay, thanks for the fast reply. I would also prefer the D5100, but it is so expensive compared to these two :P I think it will be the D3100.

    Best regards, Mahmoud

  • You are great at promoting things :)

  • Comment removed

  • @ThoughtsMedia. Thanks Man. I found out how to calculate the zoom «x» factor. You devide the max focal with th min focal. For example, a 18-55 lens (55/18=3.05. Si it's a 3x zoom)

  • How's he zoom! I have a digital camera that has a zoom of 24x. What about the zoom on this SLR (i know it's not gonna be a good one compare to my camera)?

  • @ClemeRo11 The zoom depends on what kind of zoom lens you have. You change the lens, you change the zoom. I don't recall the exact figure used to calculate the zoom "x" factor, but I think if you get up to 270mm zoom it's about 15x or so. You don't get a DSLR if you want 24x zoom...unless you want to pay $5000 for a 400mm lens. :-)

    - Jason

  • Wow...now I officialy hate my d40

  • i want that !

  • I dont know if this has been asked, what camera are you using to record this?

  • @snuffy525 It gets asked a lot, so I put it on my channel profile...but no one reads that. ;-) It's a Canon HF100.

    - Jason

  • I need help... i bught this camera today. but is it HDR mode or something like that?

  • @Piggeliggel No, the D3100 does not have an HDR mode. You can shoot raw files though and make HDR images via desktop computer software.

    - Jason

  • QuestioN!!! please answer!! i have a cable for my old canon camera, usb with a.. i really dont know what tip. it fits into a canon digital ixus 80 15 (or IS). wiould that fit into the nikon?

  • @Sylaza Yeah, the D3100 uses a standard mini USB cable, so that should work.

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia yay :) thanks so much!

  • aww. directly into the wall charger. only got one or two free/reachable thingys*lol* in our house. atm i have a wire running behind my shelf. i'll find a place for it :)) .. if i get it...

  • great presentation. i wish you did videos on other topics as well lol

  • @MS3boostin You mean non-technology topics?

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia yes. within the tech world and outside of it. you have a thorough and informative presentation style. especially compared to youtube amateur presentations. i would like to do this myself but in areas im well versed in like cars or videogames

  • @MS3boostin Thank you, that's a nice compliment. :-)

    - Jason

  • Cool

  • Hey Jason, i am looking for a so called stop down filter, i.e. a filter that acts as sunglasses for my lens so i can have longer exposures, without over blowing the image. I have tried to find one on the internet, but i guess "stop down filter" is not the right term, because i can't find one. Do you know where to get one, or what they are really called?

    Thanks in advance !

  • @dude2106 You want a "neutral density" filter, also called ND filter.

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia Thanks for the assistance!

  • @ThoughtsMedia ok thanks but the problem is i don't know which lenses have a built in focus system

  • @jesi2022 Oh, pretty much all the new ones do. It's only the older ones that don't, and some of the primes still being sold today (the 50mm f/1.8, the 85mm f/1.8, etc.). It will say in the specs for the lens.

    - Jason

  • what camera do you use to record this video?

  • @afifiafifi1 A Canon HF100.

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia What do you think Canon HF100 has better video recording quality or the Canon D3100 ?

  • @JayZ071 *Nikon D3100

  • @JayZ071 A dedicated video camera and a DSLR are very different animals when it comes to video...so it's hard to measure quality. The HF100 can focus quickly and generally allows for an easier video experience - and has much better audio. On the flip side, you can do much more creative stuff with the Nikon D3100 because you can change lenses, do depth of field shots, etc. The answer is "it depends on what you're doing to do with it".

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia can you make a video about all the lenses the D3100 can use?please because when i get the D3100 i want 3-6 extra lenses and then get even more for my media class

  • @jesi2022 Me putting lenses on the camera and taking them off would make for a pretty boring video. :-) The best thing to do is start with a prime lens (the NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8 is a good start) and learn photography with that, then move into getting a zoom lens. But there's really no point in spending money on lenses until you understand photography.

    - Jason

  • I think what you were looking for Continuous Auto Focus ( CAF ). Some still cameras have this as an option too, meaning they continually focus without the half-press, but eats up the battery faster.

  • really good information about the camera i am a happy viewer

  • I Think It's Pronounced Neekon not Naikon :)

  • @izkyle33 Neekon is what people in Asia/Europe say, Naikon is what North Americans say. Get over it. ;-)

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia actually people in europe pronounce it as nickon

  • @ThoughtsMedia I'm from Europe and I say "Naikon". ;-)

  • nice vid!

i have one question? if you were on a really tight budget, smaller than this one,

which what other camera would you get!

    (under 600 dollars)

    thx

    Dan

  • @adidassoccercleats You could look at the D3000 if you don't need video, or even a used D60 (which would be even cheaper).

    - Jason

  • Great review!!! 1 QUESTION: Can the viewfinder be focused? (the little button next to the viewfinder) some cameras dont come with that....

  • @MrChhow Yes, it can.

    - Jason

  • does it have motor for the lens or the lens that have motor ??

    plz answer

  • @mohamed26257 On the D3100, the lens has to have the motor - the camera doesn't have one.

    - Jason

  • @mohamed26257 Lens with auto-focus have the motor inside them, and those without it don't have one. The dslr doesn't have any motor for the lens.

  • does it take usb?

  • @Park2Edit Yes, you can connect via USB to a computer to download your photos.

    - Jason

  • @ThoughtsMedia Thanks

  • Hello, Sir!

    I'm thinking of buying a D3100...

Do you recommend it, or is it an other camera you would have bought instead?

Sorry for my "Europe English" :P

    - Cheers,

    S. DiCaprio

  • @sirDiCaprio The D3100 is a very nice camera. If you have the budget for it, the D5100 is even better.

    - Jason

  • dude you are awesome !!! your reviews are fast and straight to the point and tackles the real important stufg tnx

  • @ThoughtsMedia I meen you open it too fast! ;)

  • @lolboy11 Haha...so you want me to open the box and unpack it slower? That's hilarious! :-)

    - Jason

  • I just bought this camera, but without any lens. Is this still okay?

  • @MOF09 Interesting! I didn't think they were selling it body-only. You can't use the camera until you get a lens though, so it won't be useful until you do. :-)

    - Jason

  • i love watching these videos! its like christmas!!

  • too fast!!

  • @lolboy11 What's too fast? AmItalkingtoofastforyoutokeeptrackofwhatImsaying? Sorry about that, I know I do talk pretty fast. :-)

    - Jason

  • does the battery come charged?

  • IS THIS CAMERA WORTH THE MONEY???

  • its £400 uk so ablut $430 dollars lol

  • So brand new this doesn't come with an SD card and has to be purchased separately?

  • @lajlijthoj That's correct. This is the norm in the industry.

    - Jason

  • wait,so does it come with a lens or do u haft to buy it seperate???PLZ ANSWER
