I bought this last Friday. In my luck it's lens was broken or something. It works but it makes sound when it's in auto focus. Like snap, snap, grrr, ghhh. It's annoying. :(
I'm holding this baby in my hands right now. My mother sold her jewelry for this as my 18th birthday present. I am really just a beginner, but this camera works so well on everything, in my opinion. I'm doing photos for my mom, everytime she asks me, and she's so proud that she bought me that camera, she really believes in me to be a successful photographer one day. :) I love you, mom. <3
@Justsomeperson660 I don't have access to the box, so I can't measure it. That's one of the weirdest requests I've ever receieved. :-) I'm curious to know why you're asking...
@ThoughtsMedia Well, I think someone may have gotten me this for Christmas this year. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Great unboxing video by the way!
An unboxing video where the person knows what he's talking about? And who pays more attention the the product than to the actual packaging? THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!!
@hannahgrade No clue. But I'd say that by the time you outgrow this camera it will still have plenty of shutter actuations left. If I were to guess, 100K.
@ThoughtsMedia 100k shots? would that be more than enough? because i've been planning to buy a camera that would really last for a very long time. thanks for answering though.
@hannahgrade 100K is a lot of photos. Most people don't take 100,000 photos in their entire life. Also, it won't break at 100K, it's just created to do that many (or whatever the number is).
@LITHskatefilms96 Yes, he says it in the video. Battery charger included. Can take about 1000 pictures per battery charged, I am guessing. Heard that somewhere.
@ps3psnps3 At the time I did this video, a year ago, you couldn't buy the D3100 body only. Kit lenses are so cheap though, I always recommend people buy the body + kit lens. If you want to resell the camera later, it's much easier to sell with a kit lens (I know this from personal experience).
@ScOoTeRoOtEr12 I'm deciding between this and the older D3000 but for my budget I might just get the D3000 but I'm also open for any advice. Should I just get the D3100 instead for $100 more or is the D3000 good enough for me?
@DeathwishxxXify Cannon is for shooting vids, everything else go with Nikon. Nikon is more user friendly, it shows you how to use it in different settings and much cheaper.
@dookiekong007 in our country the canon is much more cheaper, theeir difference is about $100. I dont know what I'm getting this Christmas, so confused.
@ThoughtsMedia I'm a newbie into this and really confused about all the Nikon models. So currently what is the newest Nikon model? and from this video, I see that you had bought the D5000 before this D3100 so does that mean the D5000 is older than the D3100? so does the number matter at all?
I'm deciding between this and the older D3000 but for my budget I might just get the D3000 but I'm also open for any advice. Should I just get the D3100 instead for $100 more or is the D3000 good enough for me?
@thezackyv2 but does this camera won't get easily outdated? which is better? the APS-C sensor of the canon or the DX Format sensor of the Nikon? thank you so much. :D
ok im pretty positive i'll get another battery charger, cuz of the pluggers (or whatever you call them) We have other sockets here in Holland, so that means i do get all the wires *sigh*
Would have been nice if you knew more about this camera than I did! It is true that I'm looking to beg, buy or steal (from my savings account) my first DSLR and have been drooling over the d3100 for several months now. Just trying to figure out to break the news to my wife that I want a $700 USD camera!

So Jason, please accept my apologies. That is NOT what I was intending to do. It didn't dawn on me that "un boxing" is the first time you've laid eyes on the D3100.
@ThoughtsMedia I sure didn't mean to come across that way. I'm a newbie and the last thing I want to do is insult the "pro"s! So please accept my humble apology.
@bobcrothers tell her that this camera is absolutely awesome. i am having it for 3 months now & it is worth much more than you originally pay for...good luck with your purchase..
@genoblaster1 yah, the SD card has to be purchased separately. It doesn't come with the camera. I would suggest a Transcend class 10 SDHC card for maximum performance and space.
In terms of American Dollars, how much did you pay for it? Because I am buying it. I am paying $779.99 for the bundle. It includes: --The body camera --A 18-55mm lens and 55-200mm lens --A battery with the charger --Camera Strap --4GB Memory Card --And a Camera bag that can store all of the equipment included For me, It sounds like an awesome deal! All I need to buy is a tripod for an additional $30.00 or less.
i would like to buy a camera like tht but i dont know any new ones (updated version) or gds one that have come out now in 2011 . so if u wouldnt mind helpin me by tellin me some ideas on cameras and thngs :)
I'm shooting mostly macro like flowers but also landscapes and people. Pretty big variety of stuff that I'm shooting. Mostly like landmarks and stuff (beaches, places ex niagara falls). Thanks!
@EpicPBChick It's hard to find one lens to do all that. You could do most of it with the Nikkor 18-200mm lens, though it's not a macro lens. You might need a dedicated macro lens for that type of shooting.
@EpicPBChick I do have the 18-200mm lens, but I don't review lenses. If you're looking for a video shot with the 18-200mm lens on the D3100, look at the thoughtsmediaEXTRAS channel (search for it) and look at the video of the camel that I shot.

@ThoughtsMedia Okay, thanks for the fast reply. I would also prefer the D5100, but it is so expensive compared to these two :P I think it will be the D3100.
@ThoughtsMedia. Thanks Man. I found out how to calculate the zoom «x» factor. You devide the max focal with th min focal. For example, a 18-55 lens (55/18=3.05. Si it's a 3x zoom)
How's he zoom! I have a digital camera that has a zoom of 24x. What about the zoom on this SLR (i know it's not gonna be a good one compare to my camera)?
@ClemeRo11 The zoom depends on what kind of zoom lens you have. You change the lens, you change the zoom. I don't recall the exact figure used to calculate the zoom "x" factor, but I think if you get up to 270mm zoom it's about 15x or so. You don't get a DSLR if you want 24x zoom...unless you want to pay $5000 for a 400mm lens. :-)
QuestioN!!! please answer!! i have a cable for my old canon camera, usb with a.. i really dont know what tip. it fits into a canon digital ixus 80 15 (or IS). wiould that fit into the nikon?
aww. directly into the wall charger. only got one or two free/reachable thingys*lol* in our house. atm i have a wire running behind my shelf. i'll find a place for it :)) .. if i get it...
@ThoughtsMedia yes. within the tech world and outside of it. you have a thorough and informative presentation style. especially compared to youtube amateur presentations. i would like to do this myself but in areas im well versed in like cars or videogames
Hey Jason, i am looking for a so called stop down filter, i.e. a filter that acts as sunglasses for my lens so i can have longer exposures, without over blowing the image. I have tried to find one on the internet, but i guess "stop down filter" is not the right term, because i can't find one. Do you know where to get one, or what they are really called?
@jesi2022 Oh, pretty much all the new ones do. It's only the older ones that don't, and some of the primes still being sold today (the 50mm f/1.8, the 85mm f/1.8, etc.). It will say in the specs for the lens.
@JayZ071 A dedicated video camera and a DSLR are very different animals when it comes to video...so it's hard to measure quality. The HF100 can focus quickly and generally allows for an easier video experience - and has much better audio. On the flip side, you can do much more creative stuff with the Nikon D3100 because you can change lenses, do depth of field shots, etc. The answer is "it depends on what you're doing to do with it".
@ThoughtsMedia can you make a video about all the lenses the D3100 can use?please because when i get the D3100 i want 3-6 extra lenses and then get even more for my media class
@jesi2022 Me putting lenses on the camera and taking them off would make for a pretty boring video. :-) The best thing to do is start with a prime lens (the NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8 is a good start) and learn photography with that, then move into getting a zoom lens. But there's really no point in spending money on lenses until you understand photography.
I think what you were looking for Continuous Auto Focus ( CAF ). Some still cameras have this as an option too, meaning they continually focus without the half-press, but eats up the battery faster.
@MOF09 Interesting! I didn't think they were selling it body-only. You can't use the camera until you get a lens though, so it won't be useful until you do. :-)
I bought this last Friday. In my luck it's lens was broken or something. It works but it makes sound when it's in auto focus. Like snap, snap, grrr, ghhh. It's annoying. :(

ThoughtsMedia 8 months ago
@ThoughtsMedia yes. within the tech world and outside of it. you have a thorough and informative presentation style. especially compared to youtube amateur presentations. i would like to do this myself but in areas im well versed in like cars or videogames

Hey Jason, i am looking for a so called stop down filter, i.e. a filter that acts as sunglasses for my lens so i can have longer exposures, without over blowing the image. I have tried to find one on the internet, but i guess "stop down filter" is not the right term, because i can't find one. Do you know where to get one, or what they are really called?
Thanks in advance !
dude2106 8 months ago
@dude2106 You want a "neutral density" filter, also called ND filter.

@ThoughtsMedia Thanks for the assistance!
dude2106 8 months ago
@ThoughtsMedia ok thanks but the problem is i don't know which lenses have a built in focus system
jesi2022 8 months ago
@jesi2022 Oh, pretty much all the new ones do. It's only the older ones that don't, and some of the primes still being sold today (the 50mm f/1.8, the 85mm f/1.8, etc.). It will say in the specs for the lens.

what camera do you use to record this video?
afifiafifi1 8 months ago
@afifiafifi1 A Canon HF100.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 8 months ago
@ThoughtsMedia What do you think Canon HF100 has better video recording quality or the Canon D3100 ?
JayZ071 8 months ago
@JayZ071 *Nikon D3100
JayZ071 8 months ago
@JayZ071 A dedicated video camera and a DSLR are very different animals when it comes to video...so it's hard to measure quality. The HF100 can focus quickly and generally allows for an easier video experience - and has much better audio. On the flip side, you can do much more creative stuff with the Nikon D3100 because you can change lenses, do depth of field shots, etc. The answer is "it depends on what you're doing to do with it".

ThoughtsMedia 8 months ago
@ThoughtsMedia can you make a video about all the lenses the D3100 can use?please because when i get the D3100 i want 3-6 extra lenses and then get even more for my media class
jesi2022 8 months ago
@jesi2022 Me putting lenses on the camera and taking them off would make for a pretty boring video. :-) The best thing to do is start with a prime lens (the NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8 is a good start) and learn photography with that, then move into getting a zoom lens. But there's really no point in spending money on lenses until you understand photography.

I think what you were looking for Continuous Auto Focus ( CAF ). Some still cameras have this as an option too, meaning they continually focus without the half-press, but eats up the battery faster.

@izkyle33 Neekon is what people in Asia/Europe say, Naikon is what North Americans say. Get over it. ;-)

@adidassoccercleats You could look at the D3000 if you don't need video, or even a used D60 (which would be even cheaper).

does it have motor for the lens or the lens that have motor ??
plz answer
mohamed26257 9 months ago
@mohamed26257 On the D3100, the lens has to have the motor - the camera doesn't have one.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 9 months ago
@mohamed26257 Lens with auto-focus have the motor inside them, and those without it don't have one. The dslr doesn't have any motor for the lens.

Hello, Sir!
I'm thinking of buying a D3100...
Do you recommend it, or is it an other camera you would have bought instead?
Sorry for my "Europe English" :P

@sirDiCaprio The D3100 is a very nice camera. If you have the budget for it, the D5100 is even better.

I just bought this camera, but without any lens. Is this still okay?
MOF09 9 months ago
@MOF09 Interesting! I didn't think they were selling it body-only. You can't use the camera until you get a lens though, so it won't be useful until you do. :-)
