  • If this isn't sung or played at my wake, I'll never rest in peace.

  • Thumbs up if The Ladykillers brought you here LOL

  • I have never heard this song, until my Dad was singing it last year on his death bed.

  • Comment removed

  • Good tune + Good Video = Awe.

  • "Naked, and you clothed me: I was sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came unto me" Matthew 25:36

  • i think it just has that good old times kind of feel, you know like you could almost see all the good and simple things in life. some songs just have that

  • great channel! from Liverpool...

  • Beautiful, who needs and amp and mic when you are this guy, Amen brother.

  • please log on to equip.org

  • This is truly a great song, I love it, and specially love the video, with the vintage footage. Never get tired of this song.

  • This guy is a legend, always with ya Willie =)

  • Im amazed by this authentic n prolific artist who was in darkness naturally but had more spiritual light than those who been blessed with beautiful gift of sight...We ought to take notice n be GRATEFUL...don't take nothin for granted in life for Bro. Willie sent a powerful message..HIS light will sho nuff shine on Bro Willie one day when he sees Jesus face to face..glory to HIS name

  • I'm not religious either but love this man's music. Pure as it can be.

  • beautiful images and music!!!******

  • I had no idea all these popular great songs came from this far back. This Ledbelly guy did some great songs.

  • i kina don't llike this song so make it 6! terrisonb

  • I sang this when I was at the GUN POINT...Life and Death situation....fuck.... and I was spared.... I thought I was dead and only thing was in my mind was this song.... then a bright light of life shined on me.....

  • This video is amazing. I love the footage, and Blind Willie Johnson is amazing. Thanks for sharing!

  • I'm not really religious. I don't label myself as christian or jewish or muslim or anything, I like to think I'm more spiritual, because I know there's something, but I don't know what but it is loving and powerful and the opposite of hate(despite certain people using faith to spread hate). and this song is beautiful.

  • @CreatingPulsars the world needs more people like you, people who dont view faith as being something necessary of labels and who especially dont view it as something everybody needs (which then only leads to it being weaponized) i personally dont label myself as being religious and am confused about my spirituality, but i LOVE gospel music and religious music (early 5 Blind Boys, Hank WIlliams "I saw the light" even some of Dylan's christian work) so thank you

  • Im agnostic so I cant claim to be a religious person but there is something about gospel that stirs the emotions. Some of my favourite Johnny Cash songs are the religious ones. "The Old Account Was Settled Long Ago" is a particular favourite.

  • Beautiful and sad at the same time.

  • Im not the best Fan of this song to be quite Honest, Religeou Bands ruined this one :(

  • I can't imagine why even 5 people would dislike this song.

  • @terrisonb I agree. May the light of our Lord's love shine upon them and us all. God Bless.

  • Amen, i got Religion and i aint ashamed!

  • i like it too

  • Im religious but it really doesnt have to do alot with this song, This song is amazing.

  • @heheveynice 4l4ddin77 was only writin a part of the song retard

  • @choclo87

    haha thank you

  • @choclo87

    Youre the retard you prick

  • i know i got religion and i aint ashamed

  • @4l4ddin77

Ofcourse not, only a retard would be a shamed of his belief.

  • I watch this video every day. You can see my comment below a week ago. I just cant stop listening to this.

  • Man this song is so fucking awesome and epic :D

  • I had no faith in god but the feeling in his voice...

  • DOES ANYONE KNOW THE CHORDS

  • Check out the spirit of the Abbott Kinney Lighthouse Choir(Let it shine on me) from the movie Ladykillers.

  • im an atheist, but you gotta appreciate someone who can keep a faith when they go through as much shit as bwj went through. just reading bout his life and how he died is just so depressing

  • hi, me and my boyfriend love this song after seeing it at the end of lady killers (movie) (with tom hanks), tiny bit grainy but still enjoyed it.

  • i'm not religious in any way, shape or form but i love this song. People like blind willie let us see faith and christianity in a good way, rather than all those miserable pricks that say we're all going to hell, YOU ALL KNOW WHO YOU ARE!

  • @TheYearTwentyTwenty Well a lot of people misunderstand their own faith. That pretty much applies to every religion in the world.

  • @TheYearTwentyTwenty ,your so rite .

  • Great song. Thanks

  • I sang this in prison and was released with a caution

  • @rgh brighton, A caution not to sing it again? lol, (slap knee etc)

  • Really? Unbelieveable.

  • Amen to the power of the Holy Spirit... I hope you kept to the right side of the road from then on.

  • @rghbrighton good bless you,man

  • @ggparma1 respect

  • @rghbrighton Your comment still stands in the Top Comments, even though it was written a year ago. Amazing.

  • @rghbrighton They probably couldn't stand your singing (:o)

  • beautiful

  • Blind willie Johnson did many a spiritual song. Like him for that. Shoot, I just dig the man.

  • o ya get on down.... GIDEE UP

  • oh!!!!makes me go hippty- hop!!!!

  • I love the final scene in the Ladykillers when the cat carries the finger and drops it in the barge. PRICELESS!

  • real music, indeed

  • last scene in ladykillers...i just love it.

  • Nice video to accompany the music. That looks like the Cape of Storms.

  • never heard this before and some drunken b******* ruined it outside my flat. lucky for me i can stop it and play it again, again, again and again.

  • I absolutely love the part halfway in when his voice just gets so deep and gravelly. Then at the end where it goes up and soft again. Brilliant.

It's funny... I'm not at all a religious person, but there's just something about the way he sings this song that just hooks me.

    I absolutely love this tune.

  • It's called a 'false bass', and I'm pretty sure Willie has the best one. =)

  • @jaimeraim its his humanity crying out to God, amazing!

  • @jaimeraim Additive Form at its finest. Suspense builds and builds till the moment of catharsis and order is restored.

  • @jaimeraim this ong is amazin he sounds like popeye man ha ha

  • @jaimeraim the part when you reference his voice change is actually sang by" voice box tommy"

  • @johnbruder01 You serious? I thought that that gravelly voice was Willies trademark.

  • @SGRollingStone i apologize to anyonewhowas misled by my dark sense ofhumor. blind willie deserves all the credit for this beautiful song. iam an agnostic but am deeplymoved by this gentleman. R.I.P. WILLIE.

  • Amazing......I hope to see him in the next world.

  • Amazing song and video! Good Job!

  • Echoing TheJulieann4441's comment.

  • NEVER HEARD OF HIM... After listening to his songs... I love the music.. so raw, so real.

  • Fantastic video (and music). I love it.

  • amazing

  • beautiful song. blind willie, you da man!

  • ur retarted if u don't like this song

  • Mississippi Delta Music!

  • how was that first video taken?

did they tape a camera to a tall pole on a mountain?

and i hope this guy wasn't really blind, the song is really catchy =D

  • augustmaple...he WAS really blind.....the legend goes that his father's girlfriend threw acid in Willie's eyes to spite his father.

  • I've read that's an exaggeration. His stepmother threw it at his father and it accidentally hit willie. He was from Texas, by the way, not the delta.

  • Thanks for the correction,Diomedes22, (line 10), of his bio in Wikipedia, says otherwise but who really knows. And Wiki says it was lye....

  • i think thats the ocean cuz i see boats in the backround

  • love the clouds looking like the sea in the first minute, nice vid nice song

  • stipid frick you!

  • Words fail....this song is amazing.

  • a great song, jesus is the light of the world.

  • There's a great scene in "The West Wing" when one of the main characters and a guest character discuss Johnson's tragic life and death and the fact that his "Dark Was the Night" now travels on Voyager I into the universe.

  • dude west wing isn't a comedy

  • Seriously?! That's great! I say any way word can get out about Blind Willie Johnson is good. The man deserves recognition! By the way nrm333, thanks for this great video! Loved the old grainy film of the trees especially.

  • TREEPEE! <3

  • great visuals!!!

  • I'm agnostic, which means that I'm not sure if God is real or not, and I'm not part of any religion, but this song is very good.

  • Tho i may not be a believer myself I can enjoy this song not only for its message but also for the admiration of that measure of peace so many have found in God and their spirituality.

  • anyone have tabs?

  • excellent

  • Thank you very much for posting it. Beautiful!

  • Shine on William J. Johnson. May God rest your soul. "He who honors Me. Him I will honor."

  • nice one.

  • I love Leadbelly's version also. They are both great.

    RIP, Willie & Leadbelly

  • rest in peace Willie,my friend,my brother

  • Macca should have credited this.

  • Mccartney does not need to rip anybody off,he is the most successfull songwriter of all time. This is a traditional song, there can be no copyright infringement.

I agree with Alfordsville that there must be a Lord as someone must be responsible for all the hunger, murders, wars, aids, pollution, melting icecaps, genocide, cruelty going on at the moment, it can not be all Bushes fault.

  • Exactly! The story to certain extent reminds me the same with Harrison's My Sweet Lord :)

  • i don't know how anybody can look around at the Earth and the things that dwell in it and not believe in the Lord. Leadbelly also covered this one

  • hear hear !!

  • His music is probably some of favorite, but the irony is that I'm far from religious.

  • Okay.

  • idd, great cheerup song, I'm an atheist too. But does that prevent us from listening to religious music? No way

  • Indeed, but I still still think it's ironic. Makes me think there is something out there, considering how beautiful it is.

  • true, whether you belive in God or no God religious songs do cheer you up.

  • That is true, these songs cheer you up because there is hope in them. check out Test for Atheists by blessedone333 on youtube. Peace

  • PRAISE JESUS!!!!

  • That false bass stuff sounds like it would absolutely put a hole in your throat!

So good. So, so, so good. Blind Willie Johnson was actually the man who introduced me to blues (via the "Soul of a Man" documentary).

  • man his falsetto bass is amazing!!!! what an incredible guy, that poor ol' soul, atleast he's in heaven now.

  • heaven is where he came from...

he was sent to earth to shine out

    the light of his soul

we all heard it lol all across the world

    still hear his immortal voice

  • yeah man, oh yeah, he's in space now too which is good

  • I love this song! Im not religous but he makes it sound so awesome!

  • great visuals!!!

  • When he drops his voice, that's called false bass.

  • what? makes me think about amazing grace

  • Great job.

    BWJ, one of the greatest.

  • Jimmy Page says that he was the best slide guitar player ever, period. Haha read his life story, its amazing

  • This was on the soundtrack to the film 'The Lady Killers'. I always thought it was two different men singing. thanks for posting

  • hes just so powerful.his musis will live forever
