To nirrado791 I really like the way Peter sings cripple creek at their concert, you can't hear him so good, but what you do it sounds really good. And he looks mighty hot! I think I love just about every song Micky sings espcecially Going down and Zor and Zam
My favorite songs that each monkee sings that I think are their best singing voices are as follows: MIKE: Sweet Young Thing. DAVY: I Want To Be Free (fast version). MICKY:Daily Nightly. PETER: (sorry, I don't have a favorite song) but his "For Pete's Sake" is definitely a standout. What do you think?
Michael Nesmith sings lead on his own country-flavored compositions, "Papa Gene's Blues" and "Sweet Young Thing" (co-written with legendary songwriting team Gerry Goffin and Carole King).
From me:
Thanks to video, I can be in love with Mike when he was younger...I was only 6 when this was on tv!
There was an episode with Carl Ballantyne as a big TV producer auditioning groups for a new show. The boys kept trying to play this song for him, but something always interrupted. They must have played partial versions about a half-dozen times. Very frustrating, 'cause I really wanted to hear the whole song.
No matter what you thought of the "manufactured" stigma they had, you can't ignore that these where pioneers, and what was ever composed for them they did it justice, its just a pity their record label didn't give them the chance to properly as a band
While true they did justice to many songs written for them, they also butchered tons of stuff that you can hear on there later releases starting with the album Instant Replay and ending with Changes, And RCA/Colgems gave them every opportunity to play as a band, They just all had there own style of music and musicians they liked to record with. It was the main reason Pete quit He wanted them to play as a band but by the end of Pisces they were seldom in the same studio together.
Funny, I noticed that about him too. And like you said, the emphasis he put on the word "door". I also loved the backing melodious vocalisation too. When you take a closer listen to the backing vocals, it's like listening to the song for the first time again. Good ear, man.
I always thought this song had some of the coolest lyrics and ahead of its time! I could never understand why this wasn't on a single. Maybe a little short but compared to some of the songs in the 60's it isn't. Still think Davy looked cool with the "Byrds" type shades on. Thanks for posting
This would be considered one of their greatest songs if it were longer, they could definitely have gotten alot more out of those incredibly catchy (and haunting) background vocals, but they only play that chorus once(and dont even make the 2 minute mark). A brilliant song, but unfortunately a bit half baked.
ew years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand;sorry i didnt want that happening to me
Monkees were Great; They and the people around them never were given the credit for shaping a whole generation of kids in the late 60's. I'm talking about kids that weren't even 10 years old yet!
Mike never fought hard for the Monkees, Mike fought hard for Mike and control of his music. he had hoped to push the Monkees into the country rock direction. These guys were allowed to record any music they wished and did so, but they had no say over what went on a album. After Pisces they seldom recorded together. Micky said they each wanted their own sound. Pete wanted the Lovin Spoonfool sound Davy Broadway, Mike country and the internal battles eventually broke them all up. A Great What If?
you are spot-on with this comment. we had an exchange before and you beat me. maybe you stole this from me. (kidding) this is all true. you keep popping up on all my monkees favorites. very monkee-cultured, my friend, indeed. erin p.s. what do you think of "goin' down"? i love it.
Hi erin, Are you stalking me.(smile)I try to post a little info on all the Monkees vids if its got a good story behind it. Here is a little more useless information about this one. "Sweet Young Thing" will be the last song Mike records with his tonsils in. The producers like his voice but want to remove the nasal sound so they arrainge to have them taken out and it worked. Listen to his later songs and the nasal sound is gone.
you hate that you know this? i hate that you know this, and i don't! Now i'm forced to check through a zillion pages of comments on Goin' Down, but as far as i remember, there may not be that many not enough people know that song. kenc, you disgust me (smile) I liked his nasally twang. It happens to be my son and cousins all have adenoid problems, but they don't remove them routinely anymore. i'll think of one to... got one! you spelled "there" wrong. best i could do. now i'm reaching. TRUMP!
the monkees were my first introduction to music, really. i found my moms old records when i was about 6 and listened to them obsessively. i had my first ever crush on mike :) and i used to co-erce the other neighbourhood kids into being in my 'shows' where id choreograph wacky dance moves to this song. im 27 now. and the monkees still rock.
I remeber being only allowd to watch tv back then when I was 5 for a hour and I always watch the monkees I always had a crush on davy like all the other girls and now lets say Im some were in my 40:s and I still love to wacth them. THEY WILL ALWAYS ROCK TO ME
The Monkees were my daughter's first introduction to rock music as well, also at age 6 yrs. She's a few years older than you, but forever a fan, as am I.
This is a definitive song of the 60's. I loved this song. Every time the Monkees came on me and my Grandmother would watch their show with popcorn and lots of love. This is the 60's.
Great song. Too bad Davey only had the Maraccas to play on a lot of videos. That and the tambourine and he had to stay with it for the whole song. Nice face and voice though. Good to have Youtube to celebrate these old songs again.
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!! XD :3 i watched the show all the time when i was a kid and this video is one of my all-time favorites. I'm with starslb about it making me grin. Watchin all the seniors gettin' down just maked me go ear-to-ear!!!!! XD

I was 10 when the Monkees just started, and I've come to appreciate Mike's talents more and more over the years. This was such a great song, and sounds best LOUD. Thanks!
Another AWESOME Nesmith song. He really wrote some of the best Monkee tunes. He knew how to create a catchy melody. Micky had a fabulous voice, but I love me some Nez! LOVE these guys!!!
omg all you people commenting on here are ignorant... you can like both the beatles and the monkees. they were good on two completely different levels. all you need is love, stupid ladies.
Daily Nightly, is very PSYCHEDELIC!I think it was ment for the Hippie movement back in the late 60's.I think the Mog-Synthsizer (Not sure of the spelling) was just coming out and move for the drug induced trippy type people back then.Good song though.I remeber it and still enjoyed it.
Sound like your not a Beatle fan.The Monkeys did a movie that was terrible.I saw it in the movie theater and remember paying I think 25 cents to see it.
I never did see the Monkees movie "Head".Did you know Jack Nicholson was a co-producer for that movie? I bet you HE's a Monkee fan!;) Yes, I'm not too partial to the Beatles. I never understood all the hype. Although , the only one I seemed to like was George. Now he put out some good tunes.....
I almost smirked when Michael Jackson bought all the Beatles royalties in back of unwitting Paul. Well, at least he did something right;)
Sorry fonna, but The Beatles beat that by just a few years years when Hard Days Night movie came out in 1964.I am sure Mike Nesmith helped later in the 60's to bring it into the living room, but I would say The Beatles started the ball rolling.
You're so right, fonna. If it weren't for the Monkees, there would never have been a British invasion in the 60's. Men would never have grown their hair long. Musicians would never have invented new pop sounds.
The Monkees liberated us from Motown and rip-off Elvis clones.
The Monkees were just what 1963 America needed after the Kennedy assassination.
Whenever anyone asks famous musicians what their favorite rock band was, they always shout, "The Monkees!"
This one is really nice. Don't remember too many Mike solos. I'm in the mood for Monkeys tonight and I am getting my fill. Feels good to reminisce w/you all.
I love this song. I"ve met Davy once, not the nicest fellow. I met Peter in a coffee, shop, he chatted with me for about 10 minutes, bought my coffee and thanked me for being a good fan. He was a real nice down to Earth person.
you know peter loves this song you can see it i love watching him. mike is a great song writer he gave alot to the monkees i love his southern rock blues style who don't anywho i love the monkees, but i admire mike a great funny man and good looking
Glen Gampbell played the guitar on the backing track... Mike is a real go getter as he faught like hell to play on the records as was on headquarters..
This is the song that made me respect Mike Nesmith as a singer and a songwriter, I don't know why, but this has to be my favorite song that he did. Mike = best Monkee EVER!
I think it's *yield* before the wisdom of a child...monkees-dot-net (can't post URLs) has it that way, and that's the way it sounds to me, too. Nevertheless, an amazingly powerful lyric. And it looks like you and I might share an appreciation of The 'Oo, too, Loon...:-).

Michael didnt buy all the Beatles royalties,he brought some and Paul also brought some of his bands songs.

If it wasn't for Mike Nesmith, we would have never had MTV.

I second that!

Sorry fonna, but The Beatles beat that by just a few years years when Hard Days Night movie came out in 1964.I am sure Mike Nesmith helped later in the 60's to bring it into the living room, but I would say The Beatles started the ball rolling.
Take care

The Beatles made a movie about themselves. Wow!
Their own contribution, themselves.
Nesmith made the structure and introduced way more that one band. I'd call that a little more...... dynamic.

... proving once again, the Beatles were over rated.

I loved how the Monkees introduced America to psychadelia, by the way, instead of merely copying it from the Beatles.

I love this song. I"ve met Davy once, not the nicest fellow. I met Peter in a coffee, shop, he chatted with me for about 10 minutes, bought my coffee and thanked me for being a good fan. He was a real nice down to Earth person.

This is the song that made me respect Mike Nesmith as a singer and a songwriter, I don't know why, but this has to be my favorite song that he did. Mike = best Monkee EVER!

the seed of doubt you planted have started to grow wild and i feel that i must kneel before the wisdom of a child :)

oh man, we were on at the same time. that is the best lyric in the song!! now i love the song more than ever. Thanks moontheloon89
nirrad0791 4 years ago
I think it's *yield* before the wisdom of a child...monkees-dot-net (can't post URLs) has it that way, and that's the way it sounds to me, too. Nevertheless, an amazingly powerful lyric. And it looks like you and I might share an appreciation of The 'Oo, too, Loon...:-).
