George Gabby Hayes is the king of all the western sidekicks and his performances often rose beyond the genre of a B western. Funny , and universally human he represented what everyone wants in a friend. He was a fitting sidekick to the King of the cowboys. They don't make them like that anymore

Of all the 'B' Western sidekicks, I thought ol' Gabby Hayes was the coolest..He was funny, but he wasn't a clown.. Some sidekicks were just plain stupid; here, you knew ol' Gabby had, either Roy, or Hoppy, or Duke, or, Randy's back..

It's true, Gabby had his teeth pulled to make him look older, I think he was still in his 30's when he did that! He was probably the highest paid sidekick in the business at the time, Frog and Jingles weren't doing too badly either!

Gabby's grandson is the barn manager at Rock Smith Farm in Myrtle Beach SC, he looks and sounds just like his grandfather and is a super hand wiht a horse.

Gabby was my grandmother's cousin, and I was named after his mother, Susan. Thank God we don't look anything alike, lol.

@suznfused... As you're a woman, I can understand not wanting to look like George Hayes. As a man, I'd be happy to look like Mr Hayes. He was handsome, and had a beautiful head of hair and beard. PS: "Gabby"'s voice was based on a vaudeville character dubbed "the old fella". I doubt Mr Hayes had his teeth extracted simply to be able to deliver a particular voice. You can hear his "normal" voice in "Mr Deeds Goes to Town". He's one of the farmers praising Mr Deeds for his generosity.

I didn't look this up but if my feeble memory serves, George was very well educated & loved playing the part of "Gabby" so much that he had his teeth pulled purposly to get his character to sound the way he wanted. In an interview he once said when he was out he would sometimes go into "Gabby" especially if it would get him out of trouble. I agree, the best sidekick out there.

What makes these clips so funny is that Hayes was a better actor -- and had more "screen presence" -- than anyone else around him him. (Not to mention being smarter and and better-educated, too.) A perfect example of "there's no such thing as a small part, just a small actor".
