From what I recall, one of the reasons there was backlash against Ice was b/c white people were stealing black music as they had done in the past and were capitalizing off of a black art form. The interview had nothing to do with racism. Arsenio was trying to get down to the facts and rumors that were being perpetuated by the media! You could see that Vanilla was getting nervous and scared about the questions but he did his best to maintain his composure. It was also said that Vanilla stole Hammer's clothing designs and style. I'm sure there are Vanilla fans who will dispute this without even having proof but if it makes you feel better, go ahead.

From what I recall, one of the reasons there was backlash against Ice was b/c white people were stealing black music as they had done in the past and were capitalizing off of a black art form. Also it's true that white people that weren't into rap supported Vanilla Ice b/c he was white. Also Arsenio comes across as being an asshole in this video.

@RCNap2Atl MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice introduced a lot of people to hip hop who wouldn't have heard it if their record company (Capital Records owned by EMI) hadn't decided to market their songs to a pop market group. Hip Hop purists were both angry over the fact that they were making hip hop mainstream (like Ice said, not his fault) and some rappers were especially angry over the fact that it was a white guy doing it.
Also, 3rd Bass and Everlast came after Ice on the charts. He paved the way.

Both also dissed him as a fraud. The Beastie Boys, who paved the way for all the above, are another white group that had no problems gaining acceptance in the hip hop community. It probably was more the label's doing than Vanilla Ice's, but the fact is he came off as fraudulent & too commercial.

Both 3rd Bass and Vanilla Ice started performing live in 1985, 3rd Bass might have had a bigger impact long before Ice though as he was just playing clubs back in the day. The interview had nothing to do with racism. Arsenio was trying to get down to the facts and rumors that were being perpetuated by the media! You could see that Vanilla was getting nervous and scared about the questions but he did his best to maintain his composure. It was also said that Vanilla stole Hammer's clothing designs and style.
