Reminds me of so many moments from my childhood, and my late parents, thank you so much. Thanks also to Classic FM for playing Finzi's music, so thought provoking!
When I was a music student in Pasadena, California in 1961, the only piece by Finzi available in the music library was "Dies Natalis". I was so entranced by this unknown treasure, so unknown then, that I longed for more. It was many years later before more Finzi began to appear. Now, Finzi is receiving the love and respect he is due. He has had a profound affect upon me as a composer. May his music become eternal among lovers of fine, soulful musical expression.
In the Fall of 1997 I said my last goodbye to my 12 year old son when he and his mother were leaving NY for good. On the way home New York's classical radio station, WQXR just so happened to playing this most lovely piece on the car radio. I was so moved ( and still very depressed over my son's departure) by the music that I could no longer drive, but had to pull off the road until the piece ended. Simply beautiful. Thank you, Mr. Finzi for getting me through that unforgettable day.
played this about a year ago with the string ensemble in the university of aberdeen (scotland) and still constantly listen to it. absolutely stunning :)
Great arrangement, I admire his string writing and am trying to learn his techniques in my arrangements , I have a long way to go, Thanks again, Larry
Finzi was the very first CD my dad picked up for back in the 80's. And I was instantly enamored with his work, and picked up some LP's as an adult. I'm so glad to see how many others out there love his music like I do!
Amazing piece and beautiful picture..... excuse the ignorance but what is the picture? Name + artist? Sums up just how I feel at the moment and works wonderfully with the music.
the first time I heard his cello concerto I was impress, I got it from chandos label (the best recording) I really hope Yo Yo Ma could play it one day
Yo Yo Ma made the first recording of the Finzi back in the 60s or early 70s. It was and still is one of the more desirable issues on the very desirable British Lyrita lable. However I'd agree that the Walfisch on Chandos takes the concerto to another level. If only Du Pre, Rostropovich or Starker had recorded it. Anecdotally Finzi is supposed to have listened to the premier on the radio as he lay dying of cancer. I'm glad he heard his masterpiece realised.
I had heard this on my way home from work, and, wow, I never thought I would make it home, it's so beautiful. I begin to tear up before the minute mark, and before halfway, they're rolling down my cheeks.
Thank you and my local radio station for giving me this gift.
Great piece of music...
