  • The FAMOUS FLAMES at 1:40 : (far left-to-right), BOBBY BENNETT, LLOYD STALLWORTH, BOBBY BYRD, and JAMES BROWN. Brown's BAND is on the far right.

  • badd azz jamm!!!!

  • Bravo for your choice : for me this is one of the best songs by J.B.!

    Gilles Torrent (musician in Geneva)

  • Did James Brown pull this song from a gospel song called Oh Mary Don't You Weep". or did the Swan Silvertones and Claud Jeter take this song from James Brown" ?

  • @unclemighty1 The gospel song is older, so most believe that it was the inspiration for this tune. This is probably the most slept on tune in the entire JB catalogue.

  • If JB was young and alive today and starting over does anyone thing he could redirect the direction of todays music or has the kids of this era been encased in the crap that passes for music now a days to appreciate him.

  • @jpftwo

That's too difficult a question to ponder, because he had such a major influence on the music of today, a lot of which is just watered-down imitations of himself.

How could we consider how well he would do in a rap-dominated era, when without him, there would have been no rap in the first place?

  • Testify James!

  • Johnny Terry is still living. All of the original Flames Brown, Bobby Byrd, Sylvester Keels, Nathan Knox, Floyd Scott, Lloyd Stallworth & Fred Pulliam have all passed.

  • @GarwinEugeneW

And what's the name of the Famous Flame that you FORGOT? Come on - there's one more!

  • @IkeDyson71 There is??? I thought I named all of them. Sylvester, Nathan, Floyd & Fred were with the Flames from 1956 to about '59. the most famous line up was of course Bobby Byrd, Bobby Bennett & Lloyd Stallworth which was from 1960-1968. If I am forgetting anything please let me know.

  • @GarwinEugeneW

Yes, I was referring to Bobby Bennet, whom you didn't mention in your initial comment...!

  • @IkeDyson71 Uh...Do you mean JAMES ?

  • @IkeDyson71 OR... maybe BOBBY BENNETT ?

  • Respond to this video... The Famous Flames lineup on THIS song is : JAMES BROWN, BOBBY BYRD, BOBBY BENNETT, and "BABY LLOYD" STALLWORTH .

  • Quite possibly the greatest James Brown ballad ever recorded! I couldn't believe it when they cleaned up the sound and rereleased in in the 90s! It was first released in 1963 or 1964 with a very muddy sound as part of his 'Live at the Royal' album. Most of the songs on that album were live.

  • la cancion no es agradable

  • I had to remove old post but MR. JOHNNY TERRY is the only member alive (THE FAMOUS FLAME) I see and talk to him every day wow! RIP JAMES BROWN AND OTHERS

  • @peggyeriley Thanks very much for your comments . I have been trying to reach friends or relatives of JOHNNY TERRY, BOBBY BENNETT, and LLOYD STALLWORTH. I am a editor and regular contributor to WIKIPEDIA , and need to add sites and bios of the individual members of THE FAMOUS FLAMES , as the only members who have sites there are JAMES BROWN and BOBBY BYRD. Please Reply. Thanks .

  • @williamg2552 could u please give me phone number where you can be reached oh Mr Johnny Terry is the only one alive

  • Bobbay! What chu gonna do now?

  • @audesemusic

Yes, rest their souls - Lyn Collins died 13 March 2005, and Catfish passed away August 10th last year...

  • @IkeDyson71 : Wow, I had NO IDEA!!! Thanks for the update!!!

  • THANX IKE 4 THIS SONG, IT'S ONE OF MOM'S FAVORITE'S

  • WAT UP WIT MACEO PARKER ??

  • Which of the Flames used to dance like James in many clips? He always seemed to often do his thing with spins. This song is cool, but seems to dates from the late '50s. Maybe that's why it only went to 23 in 1964.

  • @Streamline09 That was "Baby" Lloyd Stallworth

  • @williamg2552 Ah, thanks. He really keyed into Jb's energy and put something of his own into the mix.

  • @Streamline09 23 was about as high as James Brown had ever been on the pop charts up to that point. This was a big hit for James. Unfortunately, Billboard had discontinued the R&B charts at the time this was out, likely depriving Brown of what would have been a top 5, and maybe even a #1 hit on the R&B charts.

  • Actually Johny Terry is still alive. I remember distinctly when James Brown funeral was being broadcast. Danny Raye acknowledged that both Bobby Bennett and Johnny Terry were both there in attendance and also members of the Famous Flames....so in reality...Johnny Terry is a really real famous flame from 1956!

  • That means that BOBBY BENNETT is the only member of THE FAMOUS FLAMES still alive, JAMES, BOBBY BYRD,BABY LLOYD STALLWORTH,and JOHNNY TERRY have all died since 2001.

  • @williamg2552

And not forgetting the band members/artists from the 70's:

Lyn Collins, Phelps "Catfish" Collins, etc...RIP.

  • @williamg2552 Johnny is still living.

  • @peggyeriley

I don't think the Day Care Center will appreciate getting calls from fans wanting to call and speak to Mr Terry. It is not a good idea to post ANY phone numbers in YouTube comments.

  • @IkeDyson71 Hi, Ike !! Good to hear from you again . Been kinda busy. Sorry I didn't get back to you right away. I saw your post on FUTURE ROCK LEGENDS. I was the one (who ELSE) who pushed for , and got a site for THE FAMOUS FLAMES there . For a LONG time , people were STILL insisting that THE FLAMES was the name of James Brown's BAND , instead of the SINGING GROUP they actually were. Thankfully , with the DVD release of THE T.A.M.I. Show last year, people are FINALLY starting to remember.

  • @williamg2552

Yes, when I saw all that stuff posted on that website about the Flames by "bill g", I KNEW it was YOU!

  • JAMES once said in his bio that THE FAMOUS FLAMES "couldn't sing that good". He needed to take the wax out of his ears. These guys were Soul Personified !!! (That was really tacky for him to diss his own group)

  • @williamg2552 Not surprised. James was a real ego trip man lol

  • ..I also wrote an article in Wikipedia on the album PURE DYNAMITE: LIVE AT THE ROYAL.Be sure to check it out.

  • Most people don't know that the group first called them selves 'James Brown and The Very Well Known Lit Candles', but they discarded that name after about 2 or 3 weeks.

  • @PaulDA2000

    Well Known Lit Candles. LOL.

The Gospel Starlighters. Yeah - I know you already knew that Paul!

  • @PaulDA2000 ...How 'bout James Brown and The Popular Pyromanics ? (LOL).

  • @williamg2552

JB & The Eminent Bunsen Burners!

  • @williamg2552

No, I didn't hear about that. It's always sad. But when you think that the Flames began to become famous in the middle of the last century, we have only bad news coming, as each one them passes away in turn.

I was reading stuff about the guy who survived the plane crash that killed Otis Redding and The Barkays. Can't get it out of my mind...

  • @williamg2552

By the way, did you know that James Brown's son Teddy (who died in 1973), had a group called Teddy Brown & The Torches?

  • Thanks again, Ike !! no blood necessary (LOL) .

  • @williamg2552

I linked your Wiki article about this tune in the description!

  • @IkeDyson71 Kool ! Many Thanks, Ike !!

  • At 1:36: Famous Flames (L to R) BOBBY BENNETT, "BABY" LLOYD STALLWORTH, (died in 2001), group founder BOBBY BYRD (died 2007), and JAMES BROWN (died 2006). Brown's band is on the far right.

  • Thanks for posting , Ike. I just wanted The Flames to get their due. They've been swept under the rug for far too long, and they were a GREAT singing and performing group.

  • @williamg2552

Okay, I've gfiven the Flames billing. You want my blood too? LOL.

  • It's not just James Brown. It's JAMES BROWN & THE FAMOUS FLAMES . (Bobby Byrd, Bobby Bennett, and Lloyd Stallworth) .

  • @williamg2552

    Okay. You told 'em.

  • Too many people in the world don't know the pre-"Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" James Brown. The Hardest Working Man In Show Business was the greatest in any of his incarnations, of course. But, the early James Brown was incredible in a way that you had to hear and see to believe! "Oh Baby Don't You Weep" is one fine example. Thanks for posting this.

  • @7jjjohnson Many people have said that JB couldn't sing. But if anyone needs proof that he could, listen to his pre-Brand New Bag ballads, "BEWILDERED", "LOST SOMEONE", "PRISONER OF LOVE", and quite a few others, The pre-funk era was to me the best of James Brown.

  • @littlenaitch2 Yeah, me too. Are you familiar with "I've Got To Cry" ?
