Great movie and a hurtful ending...it's sad though why he fixated on Alaska. The terrain is so tough to live on. There are better more hospitable climates to live in where he still could have lived alone. And he should have spent some of that savings he gave to the charity on some survival courses. The poor bastard could still be alive...Sad, but great film, great performances, and an awesome soundtrack!

It was plain bad luck that killed him. The woman who wrote the book on the local plant life had neglected to talk about the mold that could grow over the potato plant seeds. It was the mold that killed him...by cutting off his ability to retain nutrients from other sources (he ate a ptarmigan, for instance, a week before he died but he got not nutrients from it).

well, that's what the movie portrayed by I did some research and the official cause of death by the coroner was listed as "starvation". There were no signs to indicate that he had in fact been poisoned. He believed he had been, but and wrote that he was in his notes, however the phsyical evidence does not suggest this. When he died, he weighed a mere 67 pounds or roughly 33 kilos.

In the movie he dies of poison, but IRL he starved to death. He simply couldnt find food anymore, couldnt come back cause the river was full because of rains. IMO He did something foolish. The idea itsself is amazing, but he should have brought food, equipment... or at least a map. He went too far.

@guzotak he did have a map. the alaskan coroner's report of personal belongings included a map- of denali park where he was living. it is unclear why he did not try to walk the 10 miles to the service road that could have gotten him out of there. there is evidence that he most certainly did not plan on staying out there forever and that he did plan on coming home. he did not destroy his id or ss card. it is speculated that he may have been too weak to hike outta there after starvation set in
