all they had to do was pitch the nose down when they started to stall.. that MAY have saved everyone.. they where already pretty low tho so i dunno.. but reflex automatically says to pull up.. which is why at one point they went from 130 mph to 80 ugh
I am not a pilot but know enough about flight simulation. Why did the pilot kick back thrust while asking for gear and then 15 flaps. I mean he was holding 178 knots and would lose 30-40 knots easy with gear and flaps, and thus thats whats happend. I mean the pull back and thrust where death nails, but what happened 15 seconds before with air speed losss was far more illuminating. Sad and preventable.
I agree with beeroosterm. The Dash-8-400 went into a stall, the pilot panicked and pulled the nose up rather than down reducing even more airflow over the wings and they went down. I'm a pilot too. If your in a stall the worst thing you can do is pull the nose up.
@lnn6785 I have no aviation knowledge whatsoever, but is that why Air France 447 going from Brazil to Paris in '09 crashed? I heard when the plane stalled, the pilot didn't point the nose down but up instead.
u got it all wrong mate... the plain crashed on approach, not while taking off... and stop trying to imitate the air crash investigations guy! u sound like a jerk!!

That Aircraft ended up crashing into a house a few miles short of the runway in Albany, NY. There was no post crash fire. There were survivors but most were fatalities including on person in the house....
@FirstFlight271 She was at a very low altitude and large amounts of nice on the wings which made it very heavy and unaerodynamic to fly. There was 0 chance of survival. Reason of the crash was because the pliot didnt turn wing anti-ice on.

@LuisitoElCatracho Your chances of being involved in a fatal car accident is 1 in 5,000. Your chances of being involved in a plane crash are 1 in 11 million.
@tsuiter91 so your chances of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 11 million. id rather be in 5000 car crashes then in 1 plane crash. and you said an accident, less the 1/20 car crashes are fatal. the chances of a plane crash being fatal is WAY higher
@BlueFlamingoFilms When a car crashes, you might get anywhere from 1 to 8 possible fatalities. When a fully loaded plane goes down, you could lose hundreds. One plane crash would equal a whole hell of a lot of car crashes.
@BlueFlamingoFilms The probability of being in a car crash is much higher, but the death toll from a plane crash is probably going to be much higher. So while one happens more often than the other, less lives are lost initially. I dunno. Whenever you set foot outside your door, you're at risk for something stupid to happen. You just can't dwell on it or you'll never leave home.
@Michael55443 technically no both car crashes and plane crashes are both dangerous, car crashes are often and less fatal, plane crashes are rare but mostly fatal. You know? As if this is the kinda thing ACI's producers would be forced to make if their budget was limited to just home video shot at the scene, stock photos and music, and a PC with only Flight Sim X and Windows Movie Maker available for use.
Ok, so I kno the bulk of that was "filmed" in MS Flight Sim X, but it was actually pretty good for what it was, especially considering you self-produced the majority of it! Like, it's as if the only things that separate you from the likes of say, Air Crash Investigation, are a big budget and a British accent. Lol!
This was a terrible event that took place entirely due to fate. I cannot tell anyone how bad i feel for the people who lost family members/ friends... I mean really what were the chances??? I give you all my condolences(L).
I hate how the families are trying to make it so you have to have 1500 hours instead of 250 to get into the regionals. What's the magic in 1500 hours? As they said in the beginning of the video, the captain had 3300, and the first officer had 2400. if you want to prevent Colgan Air 3407 from happening again, start by paying pilots more and giving them the adequate training. Captain Renslow and First Officer Shaw had no clue how to use the stick shaker, so they all died.
@commodorefan2 exactly 100%. I just read an article that said a big part of it was fatigue. The pilots weren't rested enough. They probably didn't get in till 11pm the night before and I'm betting that was probably their third flight of the day after being up since 5am. The airlines puch young/low seniority pilots around and beat them to death with shitty schedules, and this is what they get for that.
Oh that sucked. I was 24 when I got hired flying the Saab 340 at American Eagle making $23/hour. I had to fly a TON of redeyes, and then combine that with the fact that I was commuting form Orlando to Miami. I was married, and my wife was a nurse pulling in about $40,000, so we got by. But then she got pregnant. I then upgraded to a captain, but a year later, she got pregnant again with our set of fraternal twins. That's when I got hired at Delta. Point is, it's not easy.
Two quick things: the plane fell to the right, not the left, and also please don't do crash reconstructions in FSX. They look kind of ridiculous, considering the low realism. Good work, anyway!
When you buy cheap tickets, you support the airlines in their efforts to take advantage of paying new pilots cheap and not providing adequate training. New pilots jump into the right seat with about $150K of training debt and start them on average of $20k a year so they can sell you cheaper tickets. They can be flown from anywhere in the country to any airport. By the time they show up at the controls, pilot fatigue is not uncommon. All pilots want to fly and the regionals abuse this desire.
@YeagerP51 Thats all fine and dandy, if you want to blame this whole accident on the people riding in the plane. But you have to remember, not all of us can afford the more expensive tickets and we still need to fly to see family etc.
@ownz0rjoo No, most people can't afford to buy expensive tickets. Air travel is not cheap. When we start to make it cheap, safety takes a back seat and we all lose.
@ownz0rjoo Sorry it took so long to reply. I wasn't blaming the people, I was simply stating that if we choose flying as our mode of transportation than we need to be willing to pay more $; more $ than we pay now. If we can't afford to fly than we need to explore other modes. If we keep on the way we are going with big$ training costs and low$ pilot pay and fatigue, planes will continue to crash and people will die
@YeagerP51 So true. I read that the female co pilot was working part time at a coffee house. Now imagine this same flight with Captain Sully at the controls, you'd get a totally different outcome. I'm sure on that same night people took Greyhound from Newark to Buffalo and got there quite safely.
The pilot did NOT have a "sterling reputation". He failed at least 3 proficiency checkrides before being hired at Colgan Air. After hiring at Colgan, he failed in his first attempt to qualify as co-pilot in Beech 1900's and had to redo his checkride to upgrade to captain in the Saab 340 turboprop. He only had a little over 100 hours in the -8 he was flying, a very low amount of time as captain. Please tell me no how that results in a "sterling reputation"? Who's the douchebags making this film?
The Icing was primary in the aircraft upset, but secondary in the actual crash. The primary cause of the crash was the first officers incorrect and arbitrary selection of flaps to zero while the aircraft was at a critical pitch and speed. Had the flaps been left at the 10 selection throughout the upset, the depth of the stall would not have been nearly as severe, and there is a good probabilty that the recovery could have been accomplished before ground contact.
I was on the next continental plane right behind that one and left only a few minutes after that. I remember take off was delayed due to bad weather coming from a warning from the flight ahead (maybe this one). Its wierd being so close to death, RIP.
@Dibble91 For every person that dies in a crash, there are probably 10 who feel they were close. Think of all the people in the neighborhood where the plane crashed into a house.
He was probably in love with the copilot and that combined with fatigue caused the accident. He might have even been in a euphoric state. One time I let a very pretty girl drive my car. She told me she had a license and it turned out she did not. If she had been plain looking and I wasn't besotted with her I would have asked to see her license most likely. She pulled off the highway at top speed when I asked her to pull over. Marvin Renslow was likely as skilled as any other pilot. .scapegoated
You apparently no nothing about airlines. To be hired on by any airline you must have at the VERY least 750 hours, and most only higher with at least 1,000. If your a captain you will have far more then that. There is no such thing as an inexperinced airline pilot. Any pilot who gets hired on by the airlines is highly qualified. Even if the girl failed 5 check rides she would have to later pass them in order to move on, most pilots will fail a check ride or two.
the pilot contiued to pull back on the yoke instead of pushing forward to gain lift. the co-pilot did nothing to question his actions. The truth is they both froze-up and lost control of the airplane.
"Sterile Cockpit" was not maintained during the approach in this flight, in fact it was grossly ignored and was due mostly to the Captain. The Captain did not have a sterling reputation / record. In fact he had failed several times to pass checkflight examinations. (see NTSB Sunshine Meeting on the Colgan Accident on You Tube). 9 hours, the entire meeting is recorded. The co-pilot had little or no experience flying in icing conditions, however icing was ruled out as the cause of this accident.
I think since they were talkin about icing they mistook the aerodynamic stall for a icing induced tail stall, Normal stall recovery add power lower the nose, tail stall. pull back on the yoke and dont add power retract flaps,
@yoyoitsangelo123 i can't beleive a continental airplain crashed. I mean. They actually never crash. I always go in continental airlines. What if this would happen with me :(
as far as im concerned neither one of these clowns should have even had a private pilots license, its basic flying 101, how did they ever get through training? why didnt the faa shut down the whole airline to get to the root cause? a few years back an airline in nebraska was doing a check ride and crashed when they rolled the aircraft!!! the paper work for the check ride was filled out complete on the desk, agian the faa took no action!!! I blame them!!!
The major carriers have funded the regional carriers to save money. The regionals incentives can fly in the face of safety, the connection has to be completed. The regionals have indemnified the majors from liability. IIt would be more accurate to describe this tragic flight as Cogan Flight 3407. The FAA had plenty of reasons to suspect the safety practices at Colgan Air before this tragedy. Everyone should see this story on PBS before they fly a regional..
ah excuse me, colgan is flyin on an faa aproved cretificate not one from fucking wal mart. everything in their program is over seen by the beloved faa, dont rule them out as part of the problem that let these incompetent fools fly a plane, dats the facts jack!!! the faa good at dishing out blame and not good at taking it but they are "c" students at best with the power of government behind them.
while I agree in general, i wouldn't call the co-pilot a 'clown' just under-trained and w.out experience. I believe she did the best she could under the circumstances. However, the pilot really acted poorly and as you say, shouldn't have had his license. I take exception to the announcer's comment his record was "stearling" as it was far from that, with a record of failure expecially on his tests. sad day for all. RIP
Yes I know that. I don't think that you get the point. Just because an aircraft is painted with mainline colors does not mean that that airline owns the aircraft. The aircraft is owned by Colgan. The pilots are employed by Colgan. Two completely separate companies. I think continental has at least 3 regionals flying for. They subcontract these regionals to fly for them.
I'm a commercial pilot and I absolutely love what I do - I wouldn't trade it in for the world. I accept the risks involved and understand what can happen.
Having said that - one of my biggest fears in this life is diving towards the ground, helpless, watching the ground get closer and closer. Awaiting your imminent death must be the worst feeling in the world; I mean, what goes through your mind? What do you think?
i made the account years ago, before I ever had a career flying.. and YouTube won't let you change your username, which sucks.. because I hate this one.
it's Roselawn all over again...the similarities in both cases is frightening. However, the NTSB animation of this event shows the plane losing air speed gradually from 160 to 120 knots - and neither pilot commented on it or seemed to be aware of it. They let the plane stall, then didn't perform the proper manuevers to get out of it. So sad. I bet we see this accident on a future episode of Nat Geo's ACI or Mayday. Lots to learn from.
I live about 12 miles from the crash site..I will never forget that night..Nor how I found out. I did not have the tv on and didnt know until 45 minutes later and clicked yahoo to see what was happening and had to read the headline 3 times to be sure I read it right.I didnt know anyone on the flight. But will never forget.
Bad factors: Night, cold w/ icing conditions. Errors: casual conversation (violation of sterile cockpit rules), lack of situational awareness, too much flap applied too soon, not enough power, aircraft begins stall entry, autopilot stick-shaker activates. Copilot raises flaps without pilot approval before application of more power, plane stalls and falls out of sky, pancakes onto house.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Flying is NOT safer than flying in a car. If your car breaks down you get out of it if the plane that you are flying in that you have no control over breaks down you are 30000 feet in the air with no parachute. Suicide
bad luck for that flight but its is part of life some times it can realy happen sorry for those who lost there loved ones and pilots and air lines please do extra chekup to make sure about saftey of every body
So your saying that continental is bad because a plane that doesn't even belong to them, (it belongs to their second subsidiary Colgan, but it's in CO Colors) crashed? So that means Every Airline in the world is bad, because every one of the world's airline has had at least 2 crashes
This crash was caused by pilot error. The pilot did not watch his speed and let the plane slow down to the point where it stalled, ie started to drop. Then he reacted incorrectly to the stall by lifting the plane's nose upward counteracting the plane's automatic and proper correction of lowering the nose to gain lift. This caused him to lose control of the plane and lose lift. The icing had a minor effect if any at all on the accident.
I don't know if the final NTSB report is out but they have already released a lot of their findings among which that ice had minimal effect on the plane being at stall speed, the crew acted very unprofessionally throughout the flight, the competence of both pilots has been questioned, Colgan's training methods were poor, the pilots were both exhausted and one was flying while sick (not permitted).
In short the accident was caused by pilot error. The pilot let the plane slow to a stall speed, did not notice and then reacted improperly when the autopilot turned off and the stick started shaking to warn him of the impending stall. He tried to raise the nose of the plane instead of lowering it which is basic piloting to prevent a stall. You should google this as there is a lot information including an NTSB video simulating the flight from the flight data recorder information.
Additionally, the problems of modern prop planes with icing are vastly overstated in some media. These planes are well able to handle ice conditions and are as safe if not safer than jet engine planes.
Being a pilot myself, I understand that most of the small plane crashes are caused by pilot error, when it comes to airliners, it's completely opposite.
I believe you though, it does sound like a fatal pilot error more and more.
Now there is another collision in NYC, I just saw it on CNN. And I have a flight in two hours, just basic IFR approaches under foggles, in Southern Cali around LGB. This day has been completely weird so far...
damn. im going to be a flight attendant for colgan air in a few weeks. after watching this video im gonna be a mess when i start. i was crying my eyes out
when u think about it, that music at the end makes u wanna cry-like music in a movie where there is a fairy-tale ending, but in this one-we lost 50 lives for example someone on the plane, there best day EVER, ended in a deadly plane crash-WOW when u really think-was it impact-the plane-or fire, what was it!? u kno ppl had to clean up around there-they even said that some of the bodies were still in their seats-if that were my job, i would be sick 2 my stomach & sad, WOW!!!
lol i wonder what the guy in the home was thinking. Maybe he did something bad and he was like " I hate everyone, GOD! I wish i could just die!" *BOOM*
wow, when u think 'bout it, how all 49 ppl were thinking, they never would have thought that they would (ever) or @ least that nite, die in a plane-crash! And how they felt just 1, just 1, 1 secnd before they died, whether it was the impact, the plane, or the fire, just how they felt, must have been, well, undescribable, in words, motions or feelings, just the fact of the dying must really fell terrible, and ancious, i feel so, so srry 4 all of the victims! May they ALL rest in Peace!

It was not an icing incident, Captain stalled it - poor piloting.
The Q400 has extensive data recording and it was all recovered post-crash.
No icing, pilot let aircraft get too slow and applied incorrect control inputs.

This was a terrible event that took place entirely due to fate. I cannot tell anyone how bad i feel for the people who lost family members/ friends... I mean really what were the chances??? I give you all my condolences(L).
monstahhh12 1 year ago
I hate how the families are trying to make it so you have to have 1500 hours instead of 250 to get into the regionals. What's the magic in 1500 hours? As they said in the beginning of the video, the captain had 3300, and the first officer had 2400. if you want to prevent Colgan Air 3407 from happening again, start by paying pilots more and giving them the adequate training. Captain Renslow and First Officer Shaw had no clue how to use the stick shaker, so they all died.
commodorefan2 1 year ago
@commodorefan2 exactly 100%. I just read an article that said a big part of it was fatigue. The pilots weren't rested enough. They probably didn't get in till 11pm the night before and I'm betting that was probably their third flight of the day after being up since 5am. The airlines puch young/low seniority pilots around and beat them to death with shitty schedules, and this is what they get for that.

@youronlysolution

Good work, anyway!
airbusisawesome 1 year ago
When you buy cheap tickets, you support the airlines in their efforts to take advantage of paying new pilots cheap and not providing adequate training. New pilots jump into the right seat with about $150K of training debt and start them on average of $20k a year so they can sell you cheaper tickets. They can be flown from anywhere in the country to any airport. By the time they show up at the controls, pilot fatigue is not uncommon. All pilots want to fly and the regionals abuse this desire.
YeagerP51 1 year ago
@YeagerP51 Thats all fine and dandy, if you want to blame this whole accident on the people riding in the plane. But you have to remember, not all of us can afford the more expensive tickets and we still need to fly to see family etc.
ownz0rjoo 1 year ago
@ownz0rjoo No, most people can't afford to buy expensive tickets. Air travel is not cheap. When we start to make it cheap, safety takes a back seat and we all lose.
YeagerP51 1 year ago
@ownz0rjoo Sorry it took so long to reply. I wasn't blaming the people, I was simply stating that if we choose flying as our mode of transportation than we need to be willing to pay more $; more $ than we pay now. If we can't afford to fly than we need to explore other modes. If we keep on the way we are going with big$ training costs and low$ pilot pay and fatigue, planes will continue to crash and people will die
YeagerP51 10 months ago
@YeagerP51 So true. I read that the female co pilot was working part time at a coffee house. Now imagine this same flight with Captain Sully at the controls, you'd get a totally different outcome. I'm sure on that same night people took Greyhound from Newark to Buffalo and got there quite safely.
victoriaindigo 1 year ago
The pilot did NOT have a "sterling reputation". He failed at least 3 proficiency checkrides before being hired at Colgan Air. After hiring at Colgan, he failed in his first attempt to qualify as co-pilot in Beech 1900's and had to redo his checkride to upgrade to captain in the Saab 340 turboprop. He only had a little over 100 hours in the -8 he was flying, a very low amount of time as captain. Please tell me no how that results in a "sterling reputation"? Who's the douchebags making this film?
beeroosterm 1 year ago 9
The Icing was primary in the aircraft upset, but secondary in the actual crash. The primary cause of the crash was the first officers incorrect and arbitrary selection of flaps to zero while the aircraft was at a critical pitch and speed. Had the flaps been left at the 10 selection throughout the upset, the depth of the stall would not have been nearly as severe, and there is a good probabilty that the recovery could have been accomplished before ground contact.

No facts found here.
Pilot had 600 hours and 5 checkout failures, one of the worst records ever.
Copilot was a girl not qualified to be a baggage checker, was sick and should never have been in the air.
Both these idiots made like $20/hr, exactly what my kid makes as a Starbucks barista.
Bring back the Civil Aeronautics Board or there will be lots more crashes like Colgan.
SkankWhisperer 1 year ago
@SkankWhisperer

The co-pilot had little or no experience flying in icing conditions, however icing was ruled out as the cause of this accident.

as far as im concerned neither one of these clowns should have even had a private pilots license, its basic flying 101, how did they ever get through training? why didnt the faa shut down the whole airline to get to the root cause? a few years back an airline in nebraska was doing a check ride and crashed when they rolled the aircraft!!! the paper work for the check ride was filled out complete on the desk, agian the faa took no action!!! I blame them!!!
mikemoair 1 year ago
The major carriers have funded the regional carriers to save money. The regionals incentives can fly in the face of safety, the connection has to be completed. The regionals have indemnified the majors from liability. IIt would be more accurate to describe this tragic flight as Cogan Flight 3407. The FAA had plenty of reasons to suspect the safety practices at Colgan Air before this tragedy. Everyone should see this story on PBS before they fly a regional..

ah excuse me, colgan is flyin on an faa aproved cretificate not one from fucking wal mart. everything in their program is over seen by the beloved faa, dont rule them out as part of the problem that let these incompetent fools fly a plane, dats the facts jack!!! the faa good at dishing out blame and not good at taking it but they are "c" students at best with the power of government behind them.

fashionguru2010 1 year ago
while I agree in general, i wouldn't call the co-pilot a 'clown' just under-trained and w.out experience. I believe she did the best she could under the circumstances. However, the pilot really acted poorly and as you say, shouldn't have had his license. I take exception to the announcer's comment his record was "stearling" as it was far from that, with a record of failure expecially on his tests. sad day for all. RIP

mcgra8bc 2 years ago
Yes I know that. I don't think that you get the point. Just because an aircraft is painted with mainline colors does not mean that that airline owns the aircraft. The aircraft is owned by Colgan. The pilots are employed by Colgan. Two completely separate companies. I think continental has at least 3 regionals flying for. They subcontract these regionals to fly for them.
mcgra8bc 2 years ago
No continental mainline only. Connections are not owned by continental.

Terrifying.
RIP to those aboard this and all air crashes.

it's Roselawn all over again...the similarities in both cases is frightening. Lots to learn from.

slosh29 2 years ago
Bad factors: Night, cold w/ icing conditions. Errors: casual conversation (violation of sterile cockpit rules), lack of situational awareness, too much flap applied too soon, not enough power, aircraft begins stall entry, autopilot stick-shaker activates. Copilot raises flaps without pilot approval before application of more power, plane stalls and falls out of sky, pancakes onto house.

Flying is NOT safer than flying in a car. If your car breaks down you get out of it if the plane that you are flying in that you have no control over breaks down you are 30000 feet in the air with no parachute. Suicide

Icing kills, and it isn't the first time this has happened to the same type of airplane.
DarthVADIK 2 years ago
This crash was caused by pilot error. The pilot did not watch his speed and let the plane slow down to the point where it stalled, ie started to drop. Then he reacted incorrectly to the stall by lifting the plane's nose upward counteracting the plane's automatic and proper correction of lowering the nose to gain lift. This caused him to lose control of the plane and lose lift. The icing had a minor effect if any at all on the accident.
GrizzlyUM02 2 years ago 3
I haven't checked the NTSB report, is what you're saying their conclusion or yours? I'm not being a smartass, I'm just curious.
I do know that some of these prop planes are notorious when it comes to icing.
DarthVADIK 2 years ago
I don't know if the final NTSB report is out but they have already released a lot of their findings among which that ice had minimal effect on the plane being at stall speed, the crew acted very unprofessionally throughout the flight, the competence of both pilots has been questioned, Colgan's training methods were poor, the pilots were both exhausted and one was flying while sick (not permitted).
GrizzlyUM02 2 years ago
In short the accident was caused by pilot error. The pilot let the plane slow to a stall speed, did not notice and then reacted improperly when the autopilot turned off and the stick started shaking to warn him of the impending stall. He tried to raise the nose of the plane instead of lowering it which is basic piloting to prevent a stall. You should google this as there is a lot information including an NTSB video simulating the flight from the flight data recorder information.
GrizzlyUM02 2 years ago
Additionally, the problems of modern prop planes with icing are vastly overstated in some media. These planes are well able to handle ice conditions and are as safe if not safer than jet engine planes.
GrizzlyUM02 2 years ago
Being a pilot myself, I understand that most of the small plane crashes are caused by pilot error, when it comes to airliners, it's completely opposite.
I believe you though, it does sound like a fatal pilot error more and more.
Now there is another collision in NYC, I just saw it on CNN. And I have a flight in two hours, just basic IFR approaches under foggles, in Southern Cali around LGB. This day has been completely weird so far...
...anyway, take care, thanks for the info.
