I know it's weird, but in some way i felt like this was written about a dog who witnesses his owners attention being drawn towards someone else, and the dog doesn't know how to handle it. Especially the part about chewing on the bones of the day. But maybe that's just me.

In my opinion the chewing bones is just a metaphor for the thoughts the protagonist has the whole night through, which can't be chewed and swallowed easy. He's thinking about some issues of their relationship. But she can't or won't see these problems...that's why she sleeps "soft and warm".

What else that brought you to your opinion is maybe the sentence "I'm a fast breather. I'm a hairless dog". This could be a metaphor for "feeling naked" without her.
