  • 5 failed authors.

  • what size is the format

  • Lulu is good because they only keep 20% profit for anyone who is wondering

  • What do I type in at lulu.com I really want to get this book it looks real good.

  • @hubbabubbas2 as the video says, it is not for sale yet., will update when it is ready

  • I heard you say you ordered I think 5 copies at $6.50 each. However, did you have to pay any kind of labor cost or any other cost. Or, do you simply upload your book absolutely free, and you ONLY pay for any copies you order. And, it sounds like you can order as few as 1, or 2, or 3, or as many as you like. Is this true. ThanX. Van TheeMotivator@Juno.com

  • @TheeMotivator Thant is correct. You upload for free and only pay for what you order, you can order only one copy if you want. It is print on demand.

  • @johnmonk66 wow, your book seems really interesting! :)

  • What size did you use for the letters?

  • how long did it take to ship?

  • @HakiewProductions about a week

  • How many words was it?

  • @aniart13 about 58000

  • Okay, thanks! :) Thank you for the information! :D I'm thinking about just getting self-published by a Christian company, but thank you too! :)

  • That sounds cool! :) I would most definitely read it! :) I'm writing a novel too (a very short one) about a bat, and some Christianity lessons in it :) Because I love God! :D But I'll get it self-published. But about Lulu: do they self-publish people's books when they live in Canada? Because I am in Canada :)

  • @andrepets they will publish anyone's books

  • What is the price thing that came up when you choose your format? You know when you decide the paper and their is an estimation, is that how much money they take from your profit?

  • @TheBcuzimgay sorry, i am not sure, it has been a while, and my book is not for sale so I did not have to choose price options.. if the prices you saw are around 6 to 10 dollars, that is probably the cost of making the book, so if the style you choose costs 8 dollars, and you sold it for 16, you would make 8.

  • plz can i buy your book

  • @MyDinoman123 not for sale yet

  • does lulu.com actualy work i want to get mine done =) tell me the details please :)

  • @optimisticdreamgyl16 going to lulu dot com will give you more answers than i can

  • do you have to pay just to get a copy for your shelf???

  • @clay81000 they will not print a book for free

  • Does LuLu send you any commission for the money you get from the book?

  • @wehuntdeer yes, it is your book and you decide the price

  • Just a heads up.. I'd be careful about just pulling images off the internet without having a release from the artist. (That's if that's what you did, I was just under the impression.) You'll run into legal trouble. You can always check out stock photography if you're looking for a safe, less expensive alternative.

  • @whatyoureyescouldeat

Because the novel is not for sale, you can use any picture you want, only when it becomes public will it matter. When the time comes I will draw my own cover. thanks for the info though

  • @AvidWriter96

Good luck, and usually a novella is usually 17,500 (or 10,000) to 40,000 words, and novels are 40,000 words up to about 100,000

  • I'm interested in the premise of your book. Is there anyway to set up a payment from me to receive a copy from you?

  • @LuisPenseQue Sorry, once it is published I will inform my subscribers

  • Who is Lulu's biggest competition, I wonder. I'm on the fence because I have issue with the name, I should get over it but it steals my attention. I assume your happy with the quality. Thank you for the video.

  • @artpipe I tried to find that out myself but never found anyone rated as highly, and I did a search last week and nothing has changed. As far as I am aware they are still the most popular, and their prices have come down a lot...getting an ISBN number now is 99 bucks, and to get you book listed everywhere is 75 bucks, not a bad price. Of course you keep all rights, so if a real publisher finds it, you can take it off lulu and still sell it.

  • @johnmonk66 I found a possible alternative, "createspace" by owned by Amazon. ISBN free of charge and a listing on amazon are some of the perks.

  • @artpipe That is the one, but from what I have googled, people seem to think Lulu is better. I suggest you do a lot of googling before making a choice. I have heard that Lulu pays the best royalty, so a few bucks up front will pay off if your book sells well.

  • So are you done with the actual story? Or are there still things you have to tweak?

I have to respect the work you put into it; I'd really like to be a published author, but I understand without work it's a simple pipe dream

  • John,

how long did this book actually take to write? I was just wondering that is all.

  • @TheCGIMaster been working on it off and on for years. wrote the first short story version 30 years ago. still not ready

  • @johnmonk66

    One more question.

If someone was to buy my book, would I have to pay lulu or something?

Basicly, do I lose money if someone buys my book?

  • @TheCGIMaster Pay Lulu? Of course not, Lulu stores your book electronically, the only money you spend is when you order your own copies. If you pay them a fee they will list it in all the bookstores, and if people order a copy, Lulu pays YOU. Writers get paid if their books sell. I am not sure of the fee to get it listed, but you get about half the money from sales after that..

  • @johnmonk66 (Lol sorry) One more question, What should I do if I was to get either a damaged book, a book with blank pages, or a book with missing pages from their website?

  • @TheCGIMaster Why don't you go to Lulu and ask them? Wouldn't it be a lot easier going there and learning this instead of asking me one question after another?

  • @johnmonk66 Okay, thankyou :)

  • It must feel awesome to get a physical copy of your story at last. I am definitely going to check out Lulu!

  • @AvidWriter96 I am in a similar position and this is really exciting to see that you can make it an actual physical entity that you can hold in your hands. Definitely checking out Lulu !

  • Good for you John. I remember the first time I received my first printed books from Lulu.... Red Light by Simon Young...google it... I have had some decent success with lulu and my new novel should be up there soon... all the best with yours.

  • what size did you use?

  • @TheHyperMango Don't remember, paperback I think it was called, maybe 5 by 7 or so?

  • @AvidWriter96 Good luck, just remember you have to write 100,000 words for every 10,000 that are publishable. The hardest part of writing is rewriting.

  • I bet your book is a brilliant masterpiece that many will hardly be able to believe a mere mortal wrote. They will think it is the result of divine inspiration.

but they say some of the greatest artists are the biggest assholes.

  • @EOJMSMember2 I think the true sign of an asshole is some pimple faced kid who keeps making up fake names on youtube just to spam people who point out what an asshole they are. Keep making fake names, I will just keep banning you over and over again.

  • @johnmonk66 whats this about?

  • how much total does it cost you to print a book on lulu, just for yourself, not put on amazon for other people?

  • @ricmilu I say it in the video

  • when you print your book from lulu do they add in a title page, copyright page, and contents page?? or do you have to add those yourself?

  • @makeupstar07 You design the entire thing from front to back.

  • why dont they grow plants or something?

  • @foshizle444 do you live on plants or something?

  • @johnmonk66 why yes i do, i'm a proud vegan for life

  • @foshizle444 that is the best thing you can be proud of? just because you won't eat anything with a face? Buddha said vegatarians are cowards, they eat life, but they eat life that can not run away.

  • @johnmonk66 jeez i was just saying no need to be such a douch

  • @foshizle444 goodbye

  • @KiwiDynasty That is what I did, my book is not for sale, yet. You can print up as many copies as you want and keep it private. I got a couple of softcovers to carry, and one hardcover.

  • when someone buys your book does the money go to you?

  • @videotakermaker You get most of it, but mine is not for sale, yet.

  • It sounds like a good book. I look forward to reading when it becomes available. One question though: Why are there dinosaurs in the future?

  • @jellydonutz1 They hunt dinasours in the past, not the future

  • @johnmonk66 your summary specifically says "In a FUTURE where a starving world must hunt dinosaurs for food . . . "

  • @jellydonutz1 Right, so the people of the future are starving, so they travel into the past to hunt dinosaurs for food. How else would it be described? If I said people hunting dinosaurs 65 million years ago, you would say there were no humans then.

  • @johnmonk66 I understand now.

  • I'm happy for you.

  • I had viewed a couple other Lulu authors and they mentioned something about a Tax Number if you wanted to sell your book through lulu or Amazon. It has something to do with the royalties. I was curious if you had to get one (and where do you go to do that?). Also I was curious if you could just sell your books through, say, your own personal website and have people order it as a print on demand type of operation. Do you still get 'royalties' if you do it that way? Thanks for your time!

  • @pinworms70 Lulu can assign a tax number and everything you need to sell your book. As far as selling on your own website, I am sure there is a simple way to create a link directly to your lulu page, I am sure Lulu again will have all these answers

  • Are you allowed to use online pictures???

  • @MysteryoftheGods No, but then again who knows where the picture came from? If you use a picture without permission there could be problems if you get caught. But if you are just making copies for yourself, then you can use anything you like. I will have to make my own artwork when it is time to actually publish.

  • @johnmonk66 Do you know where to have people do artwork for you?

  • @MysteryoftheGods Check nearby colleges, find an art student who will do it for free because you will advertise his work for him.

  • how much longer till available?

  • @studio9011 I wish I knew, writing a book is a full time job, and I already have a full time job, so all I can hope for is next summer.

  • fantastic, wishing you great success.

  • hey how much words did you ise in your book and would you recommend lulu

  • John, you should consider a job in narration.

  • SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD BOOK. HOW CAN I BUY A COPY??

  • @4bc27c it's gonna take a while before it is ready for sale

  • Well Done on getting your book published. Will order a copy someday it looks awesome. I am also using Lulu.com and I was wondering what size of paper did you use to publish you first copy?

  • @nejumascotty I printed up the paperback size as seen here, and on large hard cover copy for editing. Lulu now has a deal with apple, so I am working on the final draft to get it into the apple bookstore

  • "Yesterday Comes Again" would a better name. More succinct, more provocative.

  • @leroyinc The point is well taken, and if there was a single movement in time, that would be the title. But the full novel takes place in about 6 different timezones. I have begun work on it again, since Lulu now supplies the book to the itunes bookstore for a small fee, and the final title will be "When Yesterday Comes Again; Stories in Time".....maybe

  • Just interested, but how's the novel coming along?

I'm really quite interested in buying a copy and looking into your imagination.

  • @TheDarxo Was stuck in a rut for a while getting used to new job 10 months ago, have been moved up two positions since then so all time was spent learning new stuff. Finally settled into 'hopefully' longtime position so as soon as I get my hands on an ipad, i will be starting all over and writing again

  • @johnmonk66 EYYYY! well done on those promotions there John! What job do you have now?

  • Hello John, how much did you pay in total?

  • @xxx562 about 7 dollars per copy, 5 bucks in shippinp

  • hey john!

what package did you get? how much did u actually pay in royalties and whatnot to lulu?

  • My book is not ready for publication, I only ordered a few copies for myself. I will not sign on for a package until I am ready to sell it.

But I recommend any package that lists your book on Amazon and other sites, the more chances of sales the better

  • Hey John, I know how to use photoshop and would like to make a cover for your novel if possible.

  • @marick626

It is a nice offer, but I would need original works, can't use pictures. And it is some time away yet

  • Im writing a novel myself, but I worry how I will publish it. I just started college and Im studying to major in Fine Arts, nothing English related.

I hope literary agents don't turn down manuscripts for something like that.

  • If there was a formula, we would all follow it. Nothing matters except the words on the page. Find an agent who loves it, and that is all that matters.

  • lol i looked on this website earlier im only 12 but i might publish a book using my mams help!

  • do you NEED a fake name?

  • If I make it, and get rich, you think I want every loser in my life to come bothering me? You haven't met my family, if I ever got rich they would hunt me down and beg me for money. And no, they are not poor, one of them is just in love with money.

Nah, I don't want fame, just the fortune. Not even a fortune, just enough to retire on.

  • @johnmonk66 haha cool :) I really want to publish a book someday. Im thinking of "Kristen Lane" so look out for that lol :)

Do you think I could write something as good as twilight?

  • The funny thing is, Twilight isn't that great, but it's good enough and popular. My advice, read everything Hemingway ever wrote, he will teach you how to write quickly and to the point. Successful authors can be long winded, but we new authors can not. In fact get a few screenplay books, they will also help you focus more on what is important to story.

Actually Stephen Kings book, "On Writing" is one of the best advice books out there for any writer, especailly the toolbox chapter

  • @johnmonk66

thanks sooo mcuh! my goal for 2010 is to write a book, and hopefully publish it on Lulu, but im only 13 :( How long did this book take you to write? What do you think I should write about? I just cant think of anything D:

  • How about a lawyer everyone thinks is scum because he gets the worst kinds of criminals off, what people don't know is that he waits 6 months and then hunts them down and kills them.

Or you can update a popylar concept, like an old Japanese man who teaches foster kids ninjitsu. Those kids use thier training to help other kids abused by foster parents.

There are millions of ideas, but the number one rule is just to write, to actually sit down and do it

  • @johnmonk66 thanks!

I was thinking of writting about a young girl who was kidnapped and held captive in a cult sort of thing. what do you think? does it sound interesting?

  • Well that has happened in real life, think her name was Jessica Smart. Why she is kidnapped and what happens is the important stuff. The thing most writers forget is that a character has to change. Every good hero movie has a character realizing something, he learns what he needs to change things. What does she learn. Simple kidnapping and escape isn't enough. But if she is just going to kill them all, thats okay too, she learns strength

    read "the heroes journey"

  • @johnmonk66

Really? i didnt know it was a true story!! well, I guess i can still write about it, but different...ish

another idea I had was a girl with a drug using mother and the girl runs away from home to new york and sings in the streets for money and gets discovered by an agent or something who asks her if she would like to be on tv or get a cd or something...idk

  • might work as a teen novel, but minors can not sign contracts so she could not sign with an agent without her drug addicted mothers permission. Of course that adds drama, needing her mother, does her mother sell her permission to get more drugs? is the mother forgiven? does her newly rich daughter pay for her rehab? but publishers of teen books really won't publish books giving kids the idea to run away.

how about creating a teen detective? teen who uses computers to solve crimes?

  • @johnmonk66

well, I have a question, what exactly would an agent do for her? give her a record deal? record label? i pretty much just want her to become a famous singer. and i was thinking she becomes friends whith someone who maybe can pretend to be her mother. or maybe she goes off to find her father who abandoned them when she was born or something like that?

  • record companies won't talk to singers, they only talk to agents. but instead of having her run away, you should have her still living with the drug addicted mom. Have her do her songs on youtube, that is where she can be discovered without running away to the streets, it is more realistic and has a modern twist to it. When the agent contacts her to record a label, then the girl can use the internet to track down her missing father.

    runaways never end up happy

  • @johnmonk66

    haha thanks :)

One question though, would I be allowed to use "YouTube" in my book? or would I need their premission?

  • Comment removed

  • That looks like a book I would read!

  • John,

I would buy your book out of support, but what I would really like is an audiobook version. Please consider recording yourself reading the book and selling CDs of it.

  • thats actually a really good idea because his voice is so relaxing.

  • I know, right?

  • @leroyinc This

  • @leroyinc Like I replied to someone above, I think reading sections of books on Youtube is a really good way to get people interested in your story. I have done just this on my channel.

  • Hows the book coming John? Any new unboxings in the future? I got some new Shure SRH440 headphones in the mail today, I really considered filming it...

  • books on hold, working on the screenplay,

you considered filming an unboxing, dont consider it, just do it, we need more unboxers

  • o ok. yea i saw that john. book sounds very good. i would derfinatly buy it

  • Thats a decent sized book for a first and really sounds pretty interesting. After some rewrites you should give us a little preview.

  • I plan to, thanks, testing a semi-pro recorder on my ipod touch, if audio is decent, will do a little reading. Also got a storyboarding program on my touch called 'hitchcock', wow, what a program, make mini movies with pictures

  • If you took the time to do it right you might be able to make a pretty entertaining graphic novel with those apps combined.

  • Lol Hitchcock, yeah me and my friends make fun little movies with that app :D

Is this the iPod you unboxed AGEZ ago, or a new one?

And finally I have videos up now :P and a new one in about an hour

  • What will your next video be? I'd like to see something about geocatching, I've never heard of it and you said in one of your comments that you know something about it.

  • my rca ex300hd camera froze, have to get a new camera. I havent done any geocaching this year, but there are other geocaching videos on youutube

  • that looks like something id be willing to read, the only problem that i could find with it was the information on the back. try to be less confusing with the summary and more straight forward

  • right, but this was my copy, way away from being ready

  • you might want to consider ebooks as well. they are quite popular and expose the novel in yet another purchasable medium.

  • can you read the book on youtube i really like your voce it really relaxying

can you please make an vid of you reading the book out load

    even an chater

    thanks

    james

  • Yea i agree 1992, i think he should. send him a message

  • have you checked my videos, i did read a chapter of the screenplay

  • i have a chapter of my screenplay in audio form if you search my videos

  • @1992nuts I think reading sections of books on Youtube is a really good way to get people interested in your story. I have done just this on my channel.

  • Nice to see all that typing on all those different laptops has resulted in your own paperback - if only in draft stage. Something to be really proud of.

  • thanyou, and when it goes public I hope to make enough to buy more stuff to unbox, lol

  • :)

    ur not poor

i wiil be making my first unboxing vid soon please watch it and i wold like to know what u think

    thanks

    james

  • I'd love a copy :) any chance of postage to the UK once it goes on sale?

  • Once it goes for sale it will be available on Amazon, BArnes and Noble and a number of other sites.

  • Thanks, I shall be glad to pick up a copy :) good luck

  • You write SF? I haven't known it... I'm pretty interested!

  • Good luck!

Do you have any friends that are good artists cause I think using that picture may break some laws unless the image was a free one.

But yeah I'd love to have a copy one day

  • I can help proofread if you want

But I am definitely buying a copy

How much does it cost on Lulu per book to be printed?

  • appreciate the offer but I have two friends who function as proofreaders, it costs me 6.50 a copy, but when it becomes available it will probably be around15 bucks, and I will earn a dollar a copy

  • Will you ever have any books in large print or audio format. I am intrested but I am leagaly blind and I am unable to read starderd print I would require large print. Nice you do good work.

  • I'll buy a copy if you autograph it.

  • once the novel is finished I will do that, but these unfinished copies are for me and my family. thanks for the offer, once it goes public, I will offer signed copies

  • whats the copyright on the books

i write plays and i would to know the copyright

    thanks

    james (you bigest fan!!)

  • what do you mean? are you asking me how to copywright? you can contact the copywright office and pay a small fee.

or simply mail yourself a copy and never open it, that will prove when you had the idea.

i laso registered the screenplay version with the writers guild of america, so thye have records proving this is my story

  • Poor Man's copyright has no legal standing.

  • that is wrong

  • poor mans copywright is one step, basically all you need to do is prove you created the work on a certain day. Pictures of your work with that days newspaper, get a notary public to keep a notarized copy, etc

  • awesome!

  • How was it converting from screenplay to novel format?

  • wow i cant wait too! cool

  • Awesome! I can't wait till you finish so I can pick up a copy!

  • Very good to see you pursuing your dream John. Maybe you can ready us a few pages some day?

  • I have a reading of the first chapter of the screenplay version in my videos, the book won't be ready to go public for awhile
