Although I really liked your tutorial about a mushroom cloud, I do think that it is kinda lame that you used the nuke from the short movie Pop-it...If you would've credited the guy who put so much effort in it with the program Lightwave, then I wouldn't have said this...nice compositing though, keep up the good work!
@ViFFeX I believe i actually mentioned that in one of the tutorials. although because i had re rerecord about 15 min worth of the tutorial it may have been dropped. the guys who did pop it borrowed the technique from other people, many people use this technique including the "lots of robots" tutorial. I credited my friend dan who helped me the most with this effect. I do appreciate your comment tho thanks!
@magnifypictures Ok, if you mentioned it, I'll take back my words. In the making of Pop-it, which I saw a couple of weeks ago, they talked about the fact that they made the Nuke according to the one that was used in the series 24. Then I saw the making of that particular episode, and saw a Nuke that was so real looking. I think your photorealistic nuke comes very close to this effect and I really like it.
Good, but minus all the buildings catching on fire at the moment of detonation than count 2 seconds and have the guy fly away from the balcony due to the shockwave and it be grand. Love how its morphed on to a video.
He man, very, very cool!! Only a question. when you render a animation in max. How do you get only the bomb in your vid. Without the background? thanks!!
its called an alpha later export. When you render your comp render it as an image sequence using only the alpha layer, i like using PNG. then you can composite in after effects
@LionEyeproductions that also works, however i find that for long distance shots like this were parallax isn't an issue after effects tracking works just fine, version CS4 even comes with mocha which is very powerful (although i have not explored it much)
As mentioned, use "Spots" as a fractal pattern within afterburn. This way your ground-smoke will look cool and convincing. Spots have no phase (which is bad) but with size alternations and the drift amount (animated the drift from 0 to 1 or 1.5) it will look like "growing" smoke spots (which they should). Take a look onto my website (link within my profile in here) and watch my showreel - at the end you'll see an example of this. Your Nuke looks great! :)
Okay, use vertices animation to animated the bulges (choose "animated" within a edit poly modifier - note: It MUST be a edit poly modifier applied in order to get the vertices animated over time). Bring out the Groundsmoke-Geometry very fast at the begining of the explosion, and bring it (2 or 3 seconds after the blast) to an almost complete hold... from this on animate the bulges into the air very slow (but noticable) and everything will look cool :)
Hi it's me - the guy with the nuke test who told you the trick. The guy below is right: Less contrast and not this blurry and everything will be really cool :)
About the Ground Smoke: I have used Particle Flow for this, but you can add another Groundgeometry with sticky particles as you did with the torus for the cloudhead (but use a plane geometry with some pop out bulges to stick the particles onto). This way you will have the complete control over the movement of the groundsmoke.
But the guy at the foreground could use a little more acting skills. It's not like someone would just stand there relaxing when a nuke explodes in front of him
Looks great! Who doesn't love camera-matching? To get really picky, I would suggest less contrast in the mushroom cloud, only because it looks like it's lit by sunlight, when the footage looks more overcast. Nice work!
thanks! haha camera matching is awesome. yeah this was just a test, the shot isnt near done as it will eventually depict a destroyed city but thanks for the tip!
it would be much better if you added a shock wave.

I read on Yahoo news that radioactive radiation has leaked again from Three Miles Island nuclear power plant.
So this could be real.
prilstrudel 2 years ago
"Radioactive radiation?"
Heck, I've never heard of any other kind.
Thek213 2 years ago
many other kinds, heat is one
magnifypictures 2 years ago
radiation can be of any kind because it just describes the movement of subatomic particles.
prilstrudel 2 years ago
You are pretty stupid.
Radiation doesn't cause a nuclear explosion, and Three Mile Island is in New York, this is in Ontario.

dude that looks awsome! a little color correction would really get it to match the scene! Darken it up ad some eerie music and ur good to go!

This would look a lot better with an embedded fireball in the rising mushroom cloud. More blast damage and a lot more ground fires!
