Shitty airbus aircraft. There was no audible warning of the auto pilot becoming dis-engaging when the kid kept pushing the wheel to the right for more than 30 seconds.
@pbrew85 Because aircraft are designed and built by humans, and humans aren't perfect. It's still amazing how incredibly safe air travel is these days.
Having an autopilot PARTIALLY disengage with no warning should have been prosecuted as criminal negligence. And why did the brilliant plane allow itself to be banked past design limits without trying to save itself?
Someone should add a few lines to the computer program:
IF autopilot has just disconnected without warning,
@malamagr many reasons why the plane isn't to be blamed: first, a pilot is supposed to permanently scan throughout his computers (therefor supposed to see that the plane was banking) and that is why pilots don't just go te sleep when their autopilot is on. Second, you can't give too much restrictions by the plane (if it stalls you'd need to dive beyond normal limits to gain speed and save the plane, if the plane doesn't allow you to do that you'll just fall)
Brilliant!, shit were stalling, meh lets let go of the controll stick, oh look its stopped stalling, magical!!, ahaha, wow being a pilot looks really fun :)
@Snoep76239 hahahaha this whole thing is such a tragedy ..... notwithstanding that the captain was an absolute dick in allowing his kids to take control of a flight full of 75 passengers .... notwithstanding that Airbus botched up the design of the alarm system to indicate the disengagement of the autopilot.
The only freaking thing the pilots had to do after pulling up was to let go of the damn controls & the flight's uber cool safety system would have kicked in! What an absolute shame! *sigh*
The pilot is primarily at fault as a kid has no training or comprehension about what a large aircraft will do or can not do. Airbus - design and engineer an aircraft at least know how it works. Same issue with A320 Habsheim France, flight manual incorrect, pilots trained incorrectly and aircraft with landing gear down in display flyby "thinks" it is going to land and will not respond to pilots commands. Yet again another giant repeated SNAFU.
"Airbus - design and engineer an aircraft at least know how it works"
Yeah, but pilots are not engineers and engineers are not pilots. That's the big problem with Airbus, it's designed for engineers and computer scientists, not for pilots. This is why there have been so many accidents.
@chemerich Most manufactures design and engineer aircraft with little pilot input. The context of my last comments Airbus do risk more as a consortium of different investors and speaking countries and carry the attitude first is best sometimes negating safety. Money tied up in the A380 also takes funding away from investment in other aircraft. As an accident investigator, hours operated Airbus is still ahead of many other competitors but do not appear not to tolerate difficult flying conditions.
Airbus is protected against criticism by the EU. A French pilot, Norbert Jacquet, who dared to question the safety of Airbus, was immediately fired from Air France. Read about his story at his website: jacno.com
@chemerich Having studied accidents from 1964 onwards and investigated them for 4 years I most likely have comprehensive information on that. “Whistle blowers” definitely get a raw deal and recurring issues appear with many aircraft and ignored (Risk management) but crashes have put some manufactures or operators out of business. No aircraft has any protection unless until a crash. So as per previous comments some have less investment than others possibly compromising safety. That’s all from me.
I can't believe what some of these people are saying. How is this a freak accident? And how are the children innocent? Surely teenagers know they can't possibly be fit to sit in a pilot's seat on an airplane. By accepting this madness they are guilty, not innocent.
It's irritating that they're speaking with these strong Russian accents. Obviously they're not speaking in English but Russian in real life, so they should not sound foreign but like native speakers.

@JojoplusBo Yes, easily the most disturbing Mayday episode for me. So hard to believe how such a simple thing started this tragedy and escalated from there. Then to see them finally regain control only to find out they ran out of altitude. I found myself thinking of this episode for months after seeing it for the first time often waking from a deep sleep. Must admit to being worried I would develop a fear of flying because of it but flights to Winnipeg, and the Philippines went fine.
@FEA525 Yes, but from their point of view the plane was doing weird stuff on its own and it would be hard to just let go and trust it further. If I were a professional pilot and the autopilot seemed to go berserk I'd grab the controls and do what I could too.
Having said that, if the copilot really did recover from the dive and then pull up more and stall it, he's a @#$!

take it easy dude. I just laughed because he was so clueless. I feel bad for the airline, the aircraft, and the lives lost in the crash. It was an unfortunate event and was avoidable.
@yugiohmad1 This was not the first time it happened. Something very similar had previously happened with Eastern Airlines, the pilot bumped the controls disengaging (again) PART of the autopilot, this time the pitch rather than roll, and the plane descended into the everglades while they messed with a burned out light bulb.
I hate when people talk of "judging" like we do not have any right or knowhow to judge. I say fuck you, I can judge you all I want. You can judge me too. That is our right as human fucking beings. Stop being so scared to judge others. That is how people are kept in check, such as our leaders, etc. The ones who say "tish tish, thou shoundt judge others" ARE the ones who are some of the most opinionated anyways; they just want to shut other people up. It's not fair to condemn the whole crew, some of whom might have had serious reservations about the pilot's children being in the cockpit -- but who might not have been in a position to do anything about it.
And as the investigation showed, there were also anomalies about the aircraft itself that was unknown to those flying the plane. As really stupid as it was for the pilot to let his kids play at the controls, it might still not have been fatal if they'd known about those anomalies.
@MrsNorris55 : I think its inappropriate to use the term 'anomalies in the plane' as there was nothing wrong with the air craft itself. The crew were simply 'unaware' of some of the critical features of the air plane, was the root cause of the accident.
I can't believe there wasn't more outrage. All of these comments about circumstance...if the kids weren't in the cockpit none of this would have happened. not to be arrogant or something, but just think how much things improved if you can learn this kind of procedures in a simulation program (game) that every kid can buy at the local store. i only played x-plane a few times and i knew from the beginning that releasing the control yoke or turning the autopilot off and manually recovering would just do. at those times, pilots didn't know. too bad, one more tragedy... nice vid!
@platinumsalamander the kid did turn the controller too much since it was stiff, and it caused the autopilot for the whatever-it-is disengage, and the kid still didn't release the controller - it is still turned left. so the kid is banking the plane.
