  • thanks

  • You better hope that handy Boresnake rope never breaks while you're pulling on it. You will then have your worst nightmare. It has happened before.

  • can i use bore cleaner to oil parts like the charging handle, buffer spring, bolt carrier and such? or is it just used for the bore?

  • So I can use gun degreaser to clean the exterior of the gun? for example: upper and lower exterior, carry handle, rails, charging handle exterior, front post, barrel exterior, and flash suppressor?

  • Great video!!, well done!

  • Thanks for the great video!

  • i didn't hear or see a few small parts cause i was distracted so i don't know if you covered this or not, sorry lol

  • one thing im not sure of is, do you have to clean the gas key? i heard its bad to do and i heard its good, whats your take on this matter, you seem to be more knowledgeable then the guys who told me this

  • Excellent video for cleaning the AR-15...in fact one of the best and most clear I could find on YouTube. Thanks alot for making it so understandable and easy to follow!

  • @stavesacre21

IMO, there's an equal or better one-and it lasts only 6 minutes or so. Check it out: "How to field strip and clean your AR-15" by ShootingUSATV.

  • I was told to clean my AR-15 from muzzle to breach, is this bad?

  • @EvolutionSportsCA i was told the same thing

  • hi i just bought a stag arms model 3 i read the instructions and they say to clean the rifle before the first use. i bought it from a local gun shop here not directly from the manufacturer. should i clean the rifle before i shoot it or would the shop have already done that?

  • @stagarmsman always clean a new gun before shooting cause the factories put a crap load of there lube so it doesn't rust up etc on dealer shelf's and its usually thick stuff, when i bought my stag i just cleaned the chamber and bore and went to go test fire it then i did a basic field strip cleaning on it.

  • Chris what sights do you have on your ar? I have a few ideas of what they are, but not 100 percent positive of which one you have exactly,

    THanks man

  • @sxymichael4u3030 - you can use warm water and dish detergent and let it air dry some folks run them through their laundry machine - but be sure to put it in a "delicates" bag first so it does get caught in the machine and damage it.

  • @TheNSSF doesn't get caught!

  • Hey there, I am a new bushmaster AR-15 owner and I was just wondering how often should I clean my gun? I took the gun out over the weekend and fired 100 rounds. I will probably only end up shooting it on the weekends so should I clean after each use or can I wait longer? Thanks

  • @rayray3866 A quick wipe down,a quick cleaning of the bore and light oiling is fine. But a word of caution - the more you let build up occur, the harder it will be to clean. Also, if you don't plan to shoot your gun for some time, I would suggest a more thorough cleaning before putting it away.

  • This was slightly different with a Gas piston system, but I learned a lot. Thank you.

  • Everything about this video is excellent besides the poor lighting. The black shirt behind a black gun does not work!

  • Great video!

  • how do you clean the bore snake

  • great video!

  • Very nice and detailed video.

  • cant see the firearm.

  • when performing a cleaning video of a black gun, you should be wearing a white shirt. and with better lighting

  • @Swinglow80

Definitely. Really poor camera lighting and setup. Like an amateur. Seriously detracts from quality of this video.

  • i have one last question for you- i have the Bushmaster DCM with a removable handle. If i zero the rifle with the iron sights then remove the handle and re-attach it later will the rifle still be zero'ed or do i have to zero it each time i replace the handle?

Thanks again for the videos and the responses to my posts.

  • nice video+ i love cleaning my ar15

  • nice video

  • thanks for responding so quickly i couldnt think of too much more that needed to be cleaned . I was just thinking about the gas return tube. Is there a way to clean inside this tube or does it even need to be cleaned at all? And if it does need to be cleaned how often and what would be the symptoms / if any / telling it was time to do so

  • @bearwolf4x4 There is so much gas pressure inside the gas tube that nothing can stick to the inside of it. Cleaning it is unnecessary. However, if you still feel like you just have to clean it, search Brownells for "AR-15 Gas Tube Cleaners" and you will find that they sell extra-long pipe cleaners that will do the job.

  • just wanted to say nice video

    - but I wanted to ask what is the difference from the cleaning you did for this vid and a full field stripthat you do after 3k or 4k rounds ( or was this a full field strip ? ) if so- what would you do as a light cleaning after say 4 or 5 hundred rounds

  • @bearwolf4x4 this video was very close to a complete field strip. Every 1000 rounds or so I simply take the bolt carrier out, re-lube it and run a bore snake through the bore a couple times, visually inspect and that is it. I have consistently gone 5K rounds with this method before fully field stripping and cleaning.

    Thanks,

    Chris

  • Thanks for the instruction. It really helped, specially for us rookies.

  • Hey chris I'm a chris as well. Nice vid that being said you look like a marine I pray for my mill every day. Ok do you think I can do this on my own with no help do these parts only go together one way? My 5.56 is my first other than pistol/and other long guns I know those but my daughter shoots this one to. I don't want any problems ie failures that can get us hurt. ?

  • Great Video! Thanks for doing this!

  • As an NRA Basic Rifle Certified instructor who leads Boy Scout Rifle Scouting Merit badge classes, I'd have to fail Mr. Fry. He picks up a closed-bolt AR-15 and begins disassembly, without showing the rifle is UNLOADED! Dietrich W.

  • Hi RM686,

The bore snake has a built in brush which is meant to dislodge any build up in the bore. I probably could have mentioned using some type of copper solvent but my intention was to provide a quick and dirty cleaning process for this platform, not a complete field stripping and detail cleaning.

    Thanks

    Chris

  • What about copper removal from the barrel. Never heard of anyone just cleaning the barrel of a rifle or hand gun with just greaser.

If you do not believe this is necessary than something about this subject should have been mentioned in the video.

I would rank this video poor since it goes against anything I have read or heard in the last 20 years about cleaning gun barrels.

  • Hey Chris, good idea, but the lighting is so bad I can't see what you are doing. A black gun against a black shirt under indirect lighting. Not good. Tried it on 2 monitors. Neither was good.

  • If you drop the retaining bolt, it's a lost retaining bolt detent pin or spring. The pin can be fabricated by snapping the end off an old 5/8" drill bit and grinding the end to a rounded bevel. The spring you'll have to buy as any part of AR spring pack, which you should have anyways for replacement parts. There are a surprising number of little springs pins on the AR platform.

Found out the little drill bit trick when my brother dropped his detent pin somewhere somehow.

  • Degreaser that Chris likes is from

    Mil-comm (mil-comm.com)

  • @TheNSSF Thanks, I'll check it out.

  • Awesome video! Thanks NSSF! I always clean with a good movie on the TV. Always a good time!

  • Good video!

    Stephen

  • If you lost a retention pin you can replace it yourself. What degreaser did you use? One question I have always had. Will the rifle shoot with the dust cover closed? Very good video! The best I have seen on AR cleaning so far.

  • Comment removed

  • @Mrcaffinebean The dust cover automatically opens whenever the bolt slides backwards or forwards. Part of the engineering incorporated into the design of the bolt, the rounded forward cut out, and the angled block on the inside of the dust cover.

Probably the greatest aspect of the AR platform is it's inherent design to be broken down using standard GI tools, i.e. little more than his cleaning kit and a bullet or casing.

  • -- I love cleaning firearms... :P

    Great video- as always.
