This is one I'd never heard Fritz singing before! Gorgeous (including the pictures) and the slightly German French pronunciation is charming. Thank you, melpomenea!
The French is agreeably accurate without being perfect. I like the slightly italianate openness of the sound. And then, of course, there is Wunderlich - the musician, that wonderful voice. Thanks for posting.
Few who have a serious knowledge of Opera know of this man..... or can realize the extent of his talent. While many are familiar with the Pavoratti's of this world... and I'm not saying that Pavoratti is not amazing..... know that this particular tenor was on a level with Pavarotti and the REAL greats who came before him. Such a lovely and perfect voice. His early death was a tragedy few realize.
I thought Wunderlich's German accent would... well, affect the romantic soul of this French air. But now that I'm listening, I actually find it so endearing. Does anyone know whether there are more French recordings of him or not?
Every time I hear his voice I burst into tears, for what we had and what we lost. This recording is a real treasure. I thank you so much for this post. Wondeful rendition. Oh, that voice!
This is truly one of my all time favorite recordings of all kinds. It shows the ease with which one can (and should) sing, it let's us hear one of the truly great tenors of the 20th century. You can hear the angst in his voice - the passion. And his French is darned good for a German especially. Thanks for posting it!!!!
