I've said this to my wife and numerous people over the years and I stand by it. Not many bands can pull off a cover that has a great sound to it. Rare Earth is one of the exceptions to this. I hadn't heard this cover before and I am VERY impressed by the sound.

I left off that in the studio often other groups might be represented in the background, or office people, writers, management, people walking down the hall they grabbed to sing, do hand claps or whatever. It was all very much a team effort...just like the auto assembly line.

It's hard to call anything at Motown a cover. Often several groups recorded the same songs in their own style. Since it was a production line (Berry Gordy did work in an auto plant after all) they just interchanged parts and kept turning out hits. Even the Funk Brothers had 3 shifts so they could keep Studio A running 24/7.

It's not realy a cover. Norman Whitfield and Barret Strong wrote and produced this signature song as one of their first offerings after Berry Gordy finally let them run free. The Undisputed Truth got the song first, and rocked the joint. Then it was the Temps' turn, and Oh my!

Round about that time, one of the Motown BOYS "discovered" Rare Earth and signed them to a Hitsville USA contract. Then Whitfield and Strong said, "See what y'all can do with this", and the rest is history.

This is a cover OF a cover. Rare Earth covered The Temptations, who in turn(and not a lot of people know about this) covered The Undisputed Truth. Yes, that's right, The UT and not the Temptations did "Papa.." first. UT's 31/2 minute original was a big hit on the R&B charts, but only went to no.63 on the pop charts. Later that same year(1972), The Temptations remade it as a 12 minute epic that was edited down to 6:57 for single release.

Never knew there was a RE version, until now.
