5th in a table that's not sourced and doesn't state the seasons which are covered, c'mon mate, do better than that.
Yes attendances did drop for some clubs in the early 80's, but Arsenal and Tottenham were averaging over 25,000 in both 81 and 82 whilst Chelsea were averaging 13,000 and 12,000. Even West Ham were getting better average attendances than Chelsea for most of the 80's, so your argument simply doesn't stand up.
Chelsea have fairly average away support, especially for a big club. HIstorically your attendance figures have always been poor, starting from the late 50s. Have a butchers at this link and see for yourself..
@runtinsweet over 50,000 in a few division 2 games??? ! It took you 40 years to get an average attendence of anywhere near 40,000 from 1960. From 1973 to 1998 you only got an average attendence over 30,000 in 2 years. The statistics don't have you fifth at all fella, down in 8th or 9th at least. Your home support has been consistently poor for decades.
why no mention of a row in northbank bang on kickoff that ended with 60 chelsea taken down side of pitch to the clockend. later that season arsenal had alot less at stamford bridge
I'm a Man Utd fan, have been for 40 years now, whlist down in London I took this game in, stood in the clock end, saw THAT goal and was MIGHTLY impressed with the numbers of Chelsea fans their, then again stood again in the shed watching Chelsea destroy Leeds 5-0, loved hearing Chelsea fans mock Leeds late arrivals at half time -Chelsea were up by 4 or something then. Agree with Man Utd Chelsea's away support was outstanding. Happy I was around then, TRUE fans, no soul today. be quiet and watch
This was Chelsea`s first game back after promotion in 84. As a Leeds fan remember going to Stamford Bridge in apr 84, lost 5 - 0, but a cracking atmosphere, ground full of lads. Returned in 2004 and was shocked as the old passionate support had gone replaced by post Euro 96 mongs, 100% sterile. Shame.
Chelsea used to have biggest if not one of the biggest away support durring the 70's and 80's...But with it not all being about money and the price of football these days etc etc all the real old skool have been driven out shame really as chelsea had very good home support years ago and the best away supports i had ever seen...
iam old liverpool anny road when you look at stamford bridge now and see all plastic flags put out and scavers i feel sorry for chelsea old school lads they could make some noise even with a running track around pitch only liverpool and man utd had bigger away crowds then but chelsea took thousands i hate modern football cfc old school i salute you justice for the 96.
And people ask where Chelsea fans were when they were shit... this turnout was fucking impressive. One year if I remember right we took almost 10,000 away to Sunderland.
I'd have much preferred the old days, we may not used to win so much but silverware isn't everything.
chelsea games rarely sell out... always signs advertising tickets the day before the game outside the ground...... as for results against eachother, thing of the past as they have a love in nowadays dont they.... bit like spurs and aberdeen ...etc....
Just have to laugh, Chelsea's support has always been shit.. Not atmosphere at Stamford Bridge when the running track was there, and lying about how many they brought up north for games..
And thats complete shite about 4,000 being in the North Bank.. As usual Chelsea talking bollocks...
Running away?? C'mon mate learn about what went on in the 70's and 80's.. I won't deny Chelsea have had success over us in the past, but the same can be said the other way..
How long did it take to clear your injured up off the street in hammersmith btw! Memories eh!
The Arse were only ever up for it when the numbers were on their side. When that wasn't the case we found they could all outsprint Carl Lewis! Nowadays what remains of their fanbase can't even turn up for league games against Liverpool and cup semis against Spurs!
You're talking bollocks mate... Arsenal have the highest sell out rate of any team in the league, 99.9%.. You can look it up if you want proof of it.. Liverpool game was sold out, though admitedly the CC semi final wasn't, but that was mainly to the tickets not going on general sale when the club realise that it wasn't going to sell out..
I won't even coment on the irony of a Chelsea supporter talking about attendences..
I don't care what Arsenal's official figures are. They count season ticket holders whether or not they turn up. It was obvious to anyone who watched the Liverpool match that it was not sold out. Clearly you didn't.
what? Than Coventry? 15 years ago,you had 8,923 at a home game, I know Coventry never took much away but you must admit that having 8,923 at a Premiership home game is bad.
I was at that game in the clip, and there were chelsea in the North Bank, but most of them did get a slap getting out of it.
And a couple of years later at the night match you were as quiet as mice before and after, especially just off Holloway Rd.
Fair play that day though, you had a few hundred dotted about besides the CE
Congratulations, you've just proved once again that you're the most arrogant bunch of w****** in the league. You might talk about numbers but your support will be and has always been worse than Spurs & West Ham. (The premier league noise-table from last year will proved testament, when Chelsea finished 6th and Arsenal in 12th). Arsenal have always been a middle-class club whereas it has only happened at CFC in the last few years or so.
Yes, but that was Chelsea's lowest Premier League gate ever. Arsenal once got just 4,554 for a top flight clash against Leeds. Football attedances were lower everywhere in those early-mid 90's years. As you'll know, Arsenal only averaged 24,403 in 1993. Now they average 60,000.
Indeed they have....but I believe Chelsea are 5th aren't they? Hardly the no support club you'd believe they were from reading some of the posts on here. Chelsea have had some of the highest attendances ever in English football at Stamford Bridge.
The highest english club football record is 83,000 in the 1930's, Chelsea vs Arsenal I believe.. Though many clubs had 70,000-80,000 record attendances back then.
Chelsea had more crowds exceeding 70,000 than most. I believe 4 out of the top 10 attendances in English football were at the Bridge. I don't think Arsenal were in there at all.
Only Maine Road and Stamford Bridge have ever recorded attendances of over 80,000 in England.
Arsenal's record is over 73,000.. The reason that is the case would be down to size of stadiums back then I imagine and the total amount of supporters it could hold..
But then all of those records where set in the 30's..
No the highest gate is for a man city game at man road of 84,000. Highest league crowd is 83,000 at manin road for man u-arsenal when they were bombed out. The chelsea arsenal games was 82,000 the previous record.
BTW although chelsea got large one off crowds our averages were the best in the league until the middle 50s.
West hams record attendance is from the 70s against the yids.
I was at that Coventry game, stewart robson scored a crackin goal from about 35 yard which was the winner in fact. Small crowd and you could hear the players echoing around the bridge
I advise you read a couple of books on the subject or visit a couple of sites if you think Arsenal were only up for it when numbers were on our side.. In Scally's book, he rates us as the best firm to have come up to Goodison, and I could go on..
FFS keep up! We are all talking about when it was stands, when we could cram 60,000 into Highbury before seats. Most teams had huge crowds and therefore much better and louder support. You're talking about lame Premiership and Sky Sports era. It's true our crowd aint all that. If the real fans had the money to get tickets then it would be different. Too many seats for rich fuckers with credit cards and too many seats to their girlfriends, mums, sisters and their bleedin non-Arsenal mates.
Carling Cup semi vs Spurs failed to sell out. Ditto the home league game vs Liverpool. Arsenal count season ticket holders regardless of whether they actually turn up, hence the official 'sell out'. I watched that game live and the number of empty seats stood out like a sore thumb.

I got it from my own eyes. The Liverpool game officially sold out but it was clear from watching the match that there were plenty of empty seats around the ground. Which reflects what I said earlier: Arsenal count season ticket holders in their attendance records whether they turn up or not.

But then most teams had lower gates in the 80's. Arsenal averaged 23,000 in 1986 for instance. Now they get 60,000 every game.........where the fuck did all they come from?
any true and honest fan knows we always had the best away support me old man said he went wolves away wen we had a ban and took the place over bout 10000 fans. come on the chels
Chelsea keeping their heads down in the North Bank, why? Used to stroll in every year and you know it, us, spuds and the 'ammers used to take the pish out of you every year at your own place
Actually Chelsea has thousands all over Highbury that day, loads in the seats and a third of the North Bank, I was in the Clock End but had a few mates in the North Bank including one who was with his Gooner brother, he said he couldnt believe how many Chelsea were just strolling in there!
I'm a bored chelsea fan on a wind up, although it is similar to some of inanane comments posted below and as a result hard to tell. Looks like a mental day!
Chelsea have massive support plain and simple. Up until 1994 we have the 5th highest average attendance in the Country do really think that would be the case with Arsenal if you had won the same amount of Cups as us. Yes we had some shit crowds, but when we were averaging 16,000 Arsenal were only averaging 24,000 and we were shit.
Its true there were thousands of chelsea there that day. The most away fans i ever saw at highbury including the yid filth. But in the North Bank? A third of it? Dont be fucking stupid. The only chelsea in there kept there heads down.
Police had a line from the corner of the roof of the North Bank down to touchline and Chelsea had the whole corner between there and the West Stand as they couldnt get another soukl into the Clock End,there were plenty of others mixed in the rest of the end. I had two mates who were brothers and each was either Chelsea or Arsenal, the Gooner one knew loads of us said he was ashamed seeing so many Chelsea poor into the North Bank that day.
Where were when we were shit? Probably in your town, your pubs and your end.

lol i remember going to Stamford Bridge in the 80s with gates of 13,000. Cracking support ey?
Reppz06 4 years ago
But then most teams had lower gates in the 80's. Arsenal averaged 23,000 in 1986 for instance. Now they get 60,000 every game.........where the fuck did all they come from?
viallimcbeal 4 years ago
Arsenal once had a gate of 4,554 against the mighty Leeds.

Chelsea keeping their heads down in the North Bank, why? Used to stroll in every year and you know it, us, spuds and the 'ammers used to take the pish out of you every year at your own place

chelsea appear to have thousands in the clock end
pierre2006p 4 years ago
Actually Chelsea has thousands all over Highbury that day, loads in the seats and a third of the North Bank, I was in the Clock End but had a few mates in the North Bank including one who was with his Gooner brother, he said he couldnt believe how many Chelsea were just strolling in there!
mark71166 4 years ago
fair enough i guess it was the norm in those days
pierre2006p 4 years ago
The norm for Chelsea fans travelling away. Apparently we had over 20000 in Highbury on that day.
prideoflondonblue 4 years ago

tez911 4 years ago
Well, we had over 15000 fans in Higbury that day, so in your end, taking the piss I gues.

I'm a bored chelsea fan on a wind up, although it is similar to some of inanane comments posted below and as a result hard to tell. Looks like a mental day!

Nearly 20000 there that day, weren't there?
Your away support was always amazing then
(I'm MUFC, btw)
cajjer 3 years ago
Yeh I'd say about 20000. Chelsea and United had the two biggest away supports back then, would you agree?

Your atmopshere sounded good against scouse on Sunday. What was that song your fans kept on singing? Sounded really impressive.

Chelsea have massive support plain and simple. Up until 1994 we have the 5th highest average attendance in the Country do really think that would be the case with Arsenal if you had won the same amount of Cups as us. Yes we had some shit crowds, but when we were averaging 16,000 Arsenal were only averaging 24,000 and we were shit.
stpancras 2 years ago
