  • Let me remind all Catholics that in America there is a Separation of Church and State. Let me remind all Catholics that this sort of theological control does not do you reputation any good. Years ago people were worried about voting for JFK because they thought he'd take orders from the Pope....this aids and abets that paranoia. Let me remind all Catholics about the slaughter that you silently allow in Iraq and Gaza...because you are pressured to vote on one issue.

  • The Catholic Church has never been concerned that it's agknowledgement of right and wrong, of good and evil, has made it unpopular or lowered its reputation. If a church cared more about those things than right and wrong, it would be as corrupt as our politicians.

Do a little more homework on U.S. involvement in Iraq and Ganza. You will discover that both Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI have admonished Bush and America for our involvement in these and other wars. Nothing silent about it.

  • I have no problem with Catholics. Just those extremist who are so arrogant they try to legislate sin from free will. Most Catholics I know ignore the priest and practice family planning. They are educated and intelligent. I certainly don't need you to tell me about homework. Oh, and I have done my homework all my life. It's called an open and inquiring mind. The trouble with Christianity is so few people practice its basic tenets. Judge not.

  • This is the homework I was talking about:

    catholicism . about . com / od / thechurchintheworld / f / popes_on_iraq . h t m

Open-mindedness is a good thing, but it isn't enough. We must active seek the truth; namely, what God wants of us.

  • Thanks Catholic2Max, but I have had enough. It's been nice. Well, sort of...:) Take care.

  • But, for whatever reason the church still likes Columbus........and i know many catholics who supported the illegal slaughter of hundreds of thousands of iraqui civilians.......uuummm I mean the "war on terror".......

  • There are many "Catholics" (by name alone) who support abortion, too. That doesn't change the Catholic Church's stance. The unified Church of Catholicism will always stand up for the truth, no matter what others do or say. The truth about abortion is that it is the illegal slaughter of HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of innocent AMERICAN civilians.

46 million per year to be exact.

  • If you truly are a belever you shouldnt even be in the military.........

  • you are sad and misinformed.....

  • And you are sad and superstitious. Remember the Inquisition!

  • God bless you, Bishop Rene H. Gracida! Keep up the good work. I know when you enter those Pearly Gates, God will say "Well done, good & faithful servant!"

  • Its a persons choice to end a life. Abortion can be necessary to save the mother's life.

  • You are correct in saying that any person can CHOOSE to end a life - in fact, murderers do that every day. But it is no one's RIGHT - Nor has it ever been, nor ever will be - to end any life intentionally. Sometimes in an attempt to save a mother's life, her unborn child dies. This is a tragedy. But it must never be anyone's direct intention that a child die in order to protect the mother's life. The intention is the key - both lives should be given the same respect.

  • ...Therefore, we're talking about two different things: Abortion is the direct and intended killing of a child. An attempt to save a mother's life (in which the accidental death of her child occurs) is not abortion. It would be an attempt at a life-saving operation for two persons which fails. This makes all the difference in the world when stating the truth that abortion is wrong and must not continue!

  • well what if the mother can't support the baby?

  • Giving the baby up for adoption not only saves a life, but it gives another couple (who may be physically unable to have children) the beatiful gift of new life. This is such a better option than abortion, because it's a win-win-win situation for everyone involved.

  • well Obama won anyway so i'll just trust him with the choices... I mean he doesnt even have power yet anyway.

  • Yes, because we all want the adoption centers to be even more overcrowded with unwanted children. /sarcasm

  • There is no such thing as an unwanted child. Do you realize how long the wait is for families who want to adopt? In most cases they have to wait YEARS, sometimes five or more. The adoption centers are not "overcrowded."

Even when parents do not want the child they created, there is no reason to kill the child.

  • AMEN! Life is sacred; a gift from God that we must never destroy under any circumstance!

  • This is hilarious coming from people that think if you're not catholic, you're going to hell. So i guess McCain is going to hell then. You religious fanatics are so hypocritical and you scare me just as much as the radical muslims.

And one more thing, I think Jesus would have been a redistributer of wealth.

  • 1.) Catholics DO NOT believe that all non-Catholics go to hell. This is simply untrue.

  • 2.) This video does not endorse McCain, was not sponsored by McCain, and doesn't even endorse a political party, let alone a candidate. The comments about McCain are completely irrelevant.

  • 3.) Jesus said, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." I think the message is pretty clear: What belongs to God is the life he creates. How dare any man destroy it. There will never be a time that money, wealth, taxes, etc. will become a more important issue than that of human life.

  • obama 08 hey can someone fill me in on this abortion stuff and why obama is hated because of it.

  • The Catholic Church teaches that the taking of human life in any form (abortion, euthenasia, etc.) is wrong, and of the gravest offense. This is due to the great sanctity of human life - God holds human life in the highest regard. Barack Obama should not be hated; He is loved by God as much as any of us. We should love him the same. Yet it is still a GRAVE OFFENSE to vote for a candidate who has such a disregard for something as sacred as human life. This is what the Catholic Church teaches.

  • Black voters who support Obama are voting for genocide. While blacks represent 12/5 of the population, they have over 34% of all abortions. And most mills are located in poor areas. There's an unspoken racist agenda to eliminate the poor and minorities. Wake up folks. Barack Obama represents black and white elitists. A man who won't even help his poor half-brother who lives on $12 a year in Kenya, couldn't care less about poor people living in slums (including his own aunt). Vote for life.

  • ProfMTH, a lot of American Catholics are in dissent and your point is? As if we haven't known this to have been the case for years. The Church will not change the truth; people have the free-will to dissent from it. One would expect the Church to attempt to influence the outcome of the election. One should expect no less. If the Church didn't attempt to, it would no longer be preaching truth. Silence can be very loud.

"Truth is not determined by a majority vote" - Pope Benedict XVI.

  • "your point is?"

My point was rather clear, Katolico. The majority of American Catholic voters is not willing to acquiesce in the Church's bullying vis-a-vis elections. One of the ways the majority of Catholic voters demonstrated this was by supporting Mr. Obama's candidacy. It's also worth noting that George W. Bush was purported to have been a pro-life president, and one needn't look very far to see the the disaster he left behind. Americans now know what voting on one issue gets them.

  • @ProfMTH To be fair ProfMTH, it's debatable whether or not we can just dismiss Bush 43 as "leaving behind a disaster"

  • @VoiceOfModeration "... it's debatable whether or not we can just dismiss Bush 43 as "leaving behind a disaster""

It is? Well, perhaps you might try making the case that George W. Bush didn't leave behind a disaster and then we can see whether it actually admits of debate.

  • @ProfMTH I would. In my opinion, Kennedy, Reagan, Bush 41 and Bush 43 were the 4 best presidents in the last 50 years of American poli-history. I'm also of the opinion that the Democrat party just hasn't been the same ever since Kennedy, though I would say Obama has been much better then either Carter or Clinton. But listen, you're a prof, you've read a lot more books than I have - I don't even know how much longer I'll last in school, you're smarter than me. I have to resort to inflammatory...

  • @VoiceOfModeration ...language sometimes because I'm not even very good at expressing myself. All I'm saying is that not every one agrees with you on that point so it shouldn't be taken as a given. Some people think Bush 43 actually did a lot of good - laying the groundwork in the Middle East for instance etc. It's all complex arguments and differing viewpoints.

  • @VoiceOfModeration " In my opinion, Kennedy, Reagan, Bush 41 and Bush 43 were the 4 best presidents in the last 50 years of American poli-history."

That's nice. But, as you no doubt know, this is merely an expression of opinion. So it doesn't really get us anywhere.

"All I'm saying is that not every one agrees with you on that point so it shouldn't be taken as a given."

If evidence of Mr. Bush's poor performance must be produced, that's not a problem. There is an abundance of it.

  • Of course the Catholic Church wants to influence voters! The Church is very clear about what it believes and professes to be true and holy. Life is sacred, and anyone who so carelessly destroys it should not be in power, because they will continue to allow it to be destroyed.

  • According to the latest data from the Pew Research Center, Senator Obama has the support of a majority of American Catholic voters (54%), while Senator McCain has only 34%. Clearly, even most Catholic voters have decided not to bow to the Church's attempt to use its sacraments and so forth as a means to influence the outcome of the presidential election. Good for them.

  • Well said Prof. Amongst the chaos and disorder there is reason if only people would open their minds to it.;)

  • Indeed.
