You have to buy the original game to be able to upgrade to TBC, you have to own TBC to upgrade to WoTLK, and you have to have WoTLK to upgrade to Cata, so you have to own the previous expansions to be able to get to cata content.

It really doesn't matter for anything but racials, and racials hardly matter anymore.

well, they starting positions can come into affect. as well as the starting stats. and undead has this "wheel of forsaken" crap that can be useful. so race DOES matter. they all have little quirks along with pros and cons.

Sure, there are slight benefits. But they are frequently trying to normalize/homogenize the racials. Warriors are the best fear counters, and as such you could roll an orc for the slight addition to damage and the additional expertise with axes. Taurens make good tanks due to slightly more HP (and a situational stun). If you're really that bent on maxing out with every little detail in mind consider such things, but other than that you should choose the back you'd rather stare at for hours.
