@p52xxxtra lol that's the thing real, deep down soul can't/shouldn't be controlled...soul is a burst of emotion; controlling it means defeating it. That being said, I do believe that there are plenty of white singers with soul...I just feel like soul singing often comes from a place of hardship & black people generally tend to experience that more. Just because black singers flourish up & down while holding onto notes does not mean they have any more soul than whites. Too much flourishing just sounds god awful and ridiculous. Every time you see a black person sing the star spangled banner, you just know they are going to try & out-do all the ones before them. Some pitiful whites do it too.

Of course, this is my opinion & I'm sure others have different measures as far as what they consider to be soul singing. @p52xxxtra There are some singers who are technically good, but don't bring much emotion to the table. Season 10 of AI was often boring because the singers who finished one-two rarely (if ever) tapped into any deep emotion while singing. It appears that season 11 will be much better in that regard.
@rockabye274 I tend to think that while one song and what it is saying, and the right music, may touch one person emotionally, while it may not stir much emotion in someone else. It depends on how you relate to the song. I have heard songs that never meant anything to me until years later when the song's message seemed to jump out at me because of something going on in my life that was not happening before. Lyrics & music coming out just right can be soulful without veins bulging out.
