A brilliant motion picture by Bruce Beresford, based on the book "Women Behind The Wire". This picture ought to be compulsory education for all Jap High School Students .. Nippon & The House of The Son of Heaven have NEVER apologised-for nor formally acknowledged the atrocities committed by the jap military against Asians & The Western (Euro) Civilians of The Far East, as faithfully, truthfully & realistically depicted in this cinema piece. A triumph of the human spirit in extreme-adversity.
The actress who played "Rosemary"(Jennifer Ehle)is incredibley pretty looking.I could gaze into her beautiful face all day(in real life that's not the type of women I'm naturaly attracted to).
"How silent is this place, The brilliant sunshine filters through the trees, The leaves are rustled by a gentle breeze, A wild and open space by shrubs pink-tipped, Mauve-blossomed, did all grow.
A hush enfolds me, deep as I have known, Unbroken, save by distant insects lone*, A jungle clearing, a track through which we bear our load to Him, It is our Paradise Road, how silent is this place, how sacred is this place".
Could you post the scene where Glenn Close's character is taken to the woods by the Japanese sergeant and he sings the Lullaby of Itsuki for her? That scene makes me teary.
finally found this exceptionally under rated movie. yesterday, 15 February, marked over 70 years of the fall of Singapore and just watching this is apt. beautiful songs and it's sad not many know of this great film.
Does anyone know where I could get the audio track playing in the background near the beginning of the movie while they were jumping into the water as their ship was sinking? I've been searching for it for almost seven years now, please help.
@ichersue nvm found it: it's a British patriotic song entitled "I Vow To Thee My Country." I wonder why they didn't include it and some other tracks in the official/"full" soundtrack?
I hope that the Japanese and the cooperating Indonesians say sorry to my grandma and grandpa. And their parents.
Disgraceful. They almost ripped my grandma. The dad of my grandpa died in a labor camp. Working for the railroads. Like the movie 'To end all wars' and 'bridge over the river kwai', Terrible. The Japanese weren't treating like animals. No even wurse.
Even the jewish people in Asia were lowest ranking living beings.
Don't turn your back like the Emperor of Japan. He did not say sorry
