  • Well done! Congnratulations!

  • Is the Polish National Edition really that different from all the other editions out there? This nocturne sounds really different... I'm just really curious, because I play this nocturne. I don't have the new edition though, can't find it in stores around here. I have Alfred's and Paderewski ...

  • This is the most recent and definitive Urtext edition -- The new Polish National Edition by Jan Ekier - complied by Ekier from Chopin's manuscripts plus every other authentic edition, including Chopin's notes in his students' scores! Amazing playing besides. What an artist.

  • Just offle!........My professional oppinion! :P And without emotions......... Just poinging out few tones and in a very rough way.......

  • My only suggestion: slow down! Every note in this piece should be savored. This is such an emotional piece, and every phrase carries a feeling. The technical spots are scary, I know, but don't gloss them over. Milk them for all their worth! That's why Ch put them in in the firs place! Just feel it, and it will flow/. :)

  • @domilontano it sounds perfect to me and a majority of other people on this video also agree. i have no idea what you're talking about when you say "slow down" but i can feel the emotion in this piece very clearly and it's amazing.

  • This is my favorite Chopin piece, and probably my fav of all. I like your interpretation a lot. Much more than the "recital" versions that many have.. (you know, "I'm doing this because I have to and I spent numerous hours trying to get it perfect and so AAAH I'm going to be perfect now!!!) Ssssshhh!

You do a good job feeling the song, and that's more important than anything. A big "like" for you! :)

  • This is just full of mistakes (wrong tones!)...

  • @MarijaBukowsky LOLWAT?

  • Wow the best I've heard on youtube of this piece.

    So emotional

  • i love the way your hands look like flowing water when you play. absolutely amazing and elegant :)

  • OH miss Lust- What a beautiful song that touches my inner soul.Watching you play is the perfect touch that enters my heart. Bless You

  • I like the way you play but I note that you add some in the end sound a little weird.

  • Guiomar Novaes, early 1950s:

    watch?v=piipsVVZVe0

    thanks and regards

  • what audio devise did you capture this on? brightpath

  • I love watching your elegant hands! Magnificent Job!! I could listen to you anytime.

  • exquisite * flawlessly beautiful

this video should definably have more views

  • World class. What a privilege. Plus the Ekier edition!

  • Nice flowing movement though a bit posy at times. Mistakes well covered.

  • now THIS is how this piece should be played. Unbelievable.

  • You played this piece the best here on youtube, including all the workd famous guys! Especially at 1:35!

  • cant explain what happened at 3:15-those arent the notes- at all. A little coaching on tempo and legato would be helpful, but well done.

  • it's amazing pure beauty

  • Very nice interpretation! Interesting improvisation at 3:15 (different to my notes).

  • This is an excellent piece, but the middle section is too long. Chopin might be drunk when composing that.

  • around 3.20 she played different notes to my copy and to other versions that I ahve heard. were these hers or Chopins?

    however beautiful playing. thank you

  • than your sheets aren't original ;)

    this is the original :)

  • oh wow you are just so amazing!!!!!

really, bravo! excellent work! I could never get it that well! I'll practice for hours and hours and hours and I will still end up with so many screwups no matter what i play! but wow... wish i played like you!

  • Superb playing and interpretation! Right up there with Pollini and Ashkenazy. Technical excellence is so evident, especially around 4:40. One of the most inventive solo pieces ever written in Western music. Chopin, Debussy, genius!

  • lol lol lol why's she looking straight in the camera before she starts :P

But, she plays it beautifull, lots of feeling :)

  • I DONT EFFING UNDERSTANDDDD how these people can play such beautiful music without screwups!!! how how how do you do it? how long do you need to practice before you get it perfect?!?!

  • Once or twice. If not thrice and so on and so forth if you need more practice.

  • I practice the same piece over and over again for about 2 hours a day, everyday day for a few weeks. Even after that, its still easy to forget notes and make mistakes. Nocturns however, are easy to play, esp. Chopin's....he's got certain formulas , u just gotta remember them :)

  • she did make mistakes believe it or not. but she covered them beautifully. it was trully amazing to hear her play. and the only word that makes any sense of how she played 'perfectly' is: PRACTICE and tons of it :)

loved the way you played!! thank's for sharing!!!

  • It Is September, Summer will end then soon will be fall, and Winter arrive. Nocturne op.9 no1 Movement feel like snow falls.

  • Wonderful

  • This one is the best I've ever heard.

  • i absolutely love the first movement of nocturne op.9 :)

  • why no one applause? i think they thought it was the 1st movement :P

  • That's 'cause it is the 1st movement.

Well...technically it is. It's the 1st nocturne in the 'Trois Nocturne' series Chopin composed.

  • There are no improvised passages here - in fact it's clear that she's studied the Polish National Edition - perhaps the most definitive Chopin Edition around today, researched by Jan Ekier who gets his info from both Chopin autographs and the notes Chopin himself wrote in his students' scores.

  • so nice!

  • Phenomenal playing -plus she's using excellent the Chopin National Edition - what color, control and depth.

  • Wow, this is great.

The opening bars of this piece always give me chills up my spine!

The emotion put in this performance was all in the right place. A few slips but those are easily looked over by the rubato.

    Nice job.

  • Brilliant, the best one I've heard

  • The best one is Rubinsteins.

  • Nice music. But if she could play it more subtly it would be much better I suppose...

  • wht do u think of Vadim Chaimovichs tempo

  • This is just too unpolished, and she's not paying attention to the music as written. And I'm not sure if she is improvising or just screwing up in parts, but it's just not performance worthy at this point.

  • I agree

  • I've noticed that she mistakes seven times, one of them very well disguised i must say. But i don't censure her, since that she played with dedication and heart.

  • Belle interpretation. Certains effets me semble cependant parfois inutiles car il vous omettez parfois d'appuyer certaines nuances qui font que le morceaux "change de couleur".

Partition à étudier à mon avis. Mais remarquable tout de meme !

  • this is my fav youtube video of this song preformed!

  • This is absolutely fantastic. I want her as my new teacher : D

  • sabiduria

  • Looks so easy, as she is playing it

Im at the second page now and im having quite troubles

  • There is a mistake in 1:25 but it's not bad! I think you have to be more delicate!

  • excellent

  • Oops! a little mistake in 1:25 but you play it very nice and emotional, you feel the music! Congratulations!

  • well I like it, very emotional

  • beautifull.

i love this song, and you play it splendidly.

  • Antonvangrendel, the fact that you would call this a "song" and then pass musical judgement on her performance is shameful. You obviously don't know what you are talking about.

It was stunning and anything but dry and feelingless. The dynamics were incredible (and unusual, I might add) and the piece was dripping with emotion and passion.

Thank you so much, Elaine Lust, your performance was one of the best I've heard in a long time.

  • Wow ok. How does calling a piece of music a "song" have anything to do with "obviously don't know what you are talking about"? That doesn't make any sense at all.

This said, I DISagree with antonvangrendel's comment. I loved this. However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion about interpretations of music. Perhaps sometimes it is wiser to not say anything at all nothing nice is to be said, but the user obviously allowed for comments, and thus negative feedback was always a possibility.

  • non ho mai sentito così tanta passione.. ti faccio davvero i mie complimenti.. sarebbe bello conoscerti e stringerti la mano

Un abbraccio Emanuela Delfino Genova Italy

  • I enjoyed it more than Chaimovich's YouTube performance - he sent me to sleep - Mme Lust is perhaps a shade too dramatic for an early Nocturne (at times it sounds like a Ballade) but absolutely magnetic playing. What colours! BUT where did she get the variant at bar 45? Are the extra octaves her own addition? They might not be Chopin but they fit pefectly into her conception. A performance to watch over again.

  • oh my god, thats...nice =)

  • Eliane Lust, you are wonderful!

  • GREAT!! LOVE IT!! but yeah where the fuck is everyone? Haters...

  • Brava! The first youtube version of this piece that has the full emotional range and depth expressed. Very well done.

  • bravo !! je félicite cette interprétation splendidie

j'essaie d' apprendre cette nocturne mais je cela n'est pas gagné d'avance !!!

  • So fiery!

  • This is the best version I have found so far on youtube - but I must say I didn't like the variation - maybe I've just heard the piece too many times and the change was a shock!

  • What the F***?

Did everyone just die or something??? Where was the applause?

    That was amazing!

  • LOL.

  • I love it at 3:15.

  • Part 2

No. 2- When there was a dyanamic change from ppp to f(bars 24-26), I felt that there needed to be more contrast because it sounded more like p to mf.

Everything else I thought was fine and I especially loved what you did with the notes at 3:15. This just made it sound so much more interesting. Just maybe show more the passion in the notes you play rather than the movements you do with your body. Bravo!

    Felix

  • Part 1

Hey, I'm currently studying this piece for my A.Mus exam. I can see that you show a lot of passion with your movements and your technique seems fantastic. I have just a few suggestions to make:

No. 1 - Between 1:29 and 1:36, I feel that the acciacaturas should be played on the beat rather than before the beat so that it sounds more romantic and passionate rather than dramatic.

  • And you play wrong notes at 4:46 :)

  • A wrong note here and there is not everything dude. Even Horowitz made mistakes once in awhile. Why point it out.

  • Essaie de faire pareil, et après (seulement après) on verra ...

  • Indeed, HORRIBLE!!! Why for god's sake?? You also play wrong notes at 1:15.

You play the rest of this piece very beautifully!! With a lot of emotion in it. But don't try making such variations...

    Go on with it!

    Michiel

  • excellent but the variation at 3:15 is horrible

  • I thought the variation was excellent. It made it sound much more alive!

  • I think the mistakes occur here because of too much emotional playing? Possibly...your technique is very good obviously and you need to look at this music less emotionally :D

  • beautifull ... your very expressive.

  • A gripping perfomance...couldn't stop watching ;)

  • Very nice indeed. Only two things: at the spot in 1:27 there's not supposed to be a trill, there's supposed to be two grace notes ( vocal or instrumental embellishments or ornaments represented as notes smaller than the normal standard size) the trill comes at the last part. Second point: around the 3:38 or something like that your left hand became too loud. The listeners are not interested in listening to the left hand, they're interested in listening to the melody.

  • You probably have a different version of the score...there's so many of them! She plays all the right trills and acciaccaturas!

  • well Done! few mistakes. but well done!

  • Fantastic rendition of one of my favorite piano pieces. Aside from a couple of missed notes, I can't imagine this nocturne being played any better. The dynamics are absolutely perfect and the piece is played with so much passion. Even the variation at 3:15 is a nice touch adding color to a section that sometimes becomes repetitive. Well done!

  • one word, perfect!

  • Very beautiful. Nice dynamic contrast especially in the Db Major section.

  • I love this - so beautiful, sensitive, lovely. I can't believe there aren't more comments!

  • This is great. Thank you for sharing :)

  • this makes me want to send in my own recording of this piece. i think you should play piece slower and have a more emotional feeling added to it. Was that a mistake 3:15 or was it a variation because it didn't sound right. You should listen to roger woodwards recording it's fantastic

  • She played my favorite Chopin Nocturne so beautifully! Thank you for posting!

  • Beautiful!! I've only learned the first 2 pages of this piece 12 years ago and never bothered to finish learning it. Hearing her play this piece makes me want to finish learning it. It's absolutely beautiful!

  • Hearing her playing, I'd had what I call the Chopin's chill. And I didn't get that often. Thanks.

  • Elle joue merveilleusement bien avec beaucoup de sensibilité et de brio...un véritable plaisir non seulement par la beauté de l'oeuvre de Chopin, mais surtout par l'interprétation qu'elle fait - passionant!

  • Great playing! What a raange of dynamics and emotion. Just beautiful.

  • incredible

  • incredible - so sensitive, real - and true.

  • excellent

  • Fantastic
