The weird thing is I didn't really care for this song until I heard the remastered version. Holy crap, I missed out. It's instantly one of my favorites on PHM. It's amazing what remastering brings out.
@Withbleedthrewteeth Cheers! I've actually seen a Reznor A/C unit at place I used to work a few years back. (I just thought the name was a coincedence!)
I know that Trent doesn't like a few songs from PHM, mainly he just thinks they're a little too poppy. In fact, I've heard him say they'd play anything from it live except for The Only Time, which he really can't stand. i like it, but then again, he's a perfectionist. Hell, he didn't think their Woodstock 94 show was good enough. No wonder everything he does is amazing.
I love all of his work, but Fragile and Spiral are probably his best to me. I think TDS hits you like a gunshot, it's hard and immediate, but Fragile acts like an acid, corroding at you and wearing you down until the end. Both albums have an emotional decay to them, a sense of everything wearing away. Not a lot of music does that.
@awake352 The Spiral is definitely the best, after words its hard to choose. PHM has this beautiful, raw, sexual, sad energy to it that I like when I'm feeling pent up. Broken is sexual but its also dirty and fucked up and makes me want to just destroy something. Fragile is as you said, it wears away at you, it makes you realize a smallness, but there's also some hope to it. The rest are great, but don't stack up to those 4. That was Trents cycle, born, burning, falling, and rising.
HOLY SMOKES THIS SOUNDS SO MUCH BETTER REMASTERED!!! I've been contemplating buying the remastered vinyl for a while now... I almost bought the CD for Christmas but somebody convinced me not to. That same person also convinced me not to get the re-issued deluxe Downward Spiral back in 2005. Maybe I should stop taking their advice lol.
@donut2790 it's because during the mastering they ran it through a bunch of old tube pre's and compressors. He does the same thing on Mr.Self Destruct

@KedViper I mean as in his loss of emotions (similar to a machine or robot, whatever) being a defense mechanism

@Tj930 Actually, Trent said in a french interview that the cover was a turbine, twisted to looks like a rib cage.
So This is something between the Machine and the Man.

@awake352 Damn, really? The footage of woodstock is amazing, and I love The Only Time. Theres so much raw, sexual energy in it.

I've heard him act critical of the Fragile album, even, so yeah. There's a reason everything he makes is so amazing.

@awake352 I think the Fragiles brilliant, not as concise and hard hitting as the Spiral or Broken but one hell of a journey.
