I wonder how many of those old boys were on morphine. During the Civil War morphine was used so freely, -to treat everything from amputation to diarrhea-, that morphine addiction became so widespread it was commonly known as "soldiers disease". Until December 1914 free Americans could buy morphine over the counter; that's when Congressman Harrison's horrible little Bill became law, and the USA began to slowly sink, holed below the waterline by meddling statists and their evil prohibition plan.
@afghanmanyeah Why would you not think of these men and all Southerners, for that matter, after reconstruction? THAT is eerie. You say they fought to dismantle the Republic. They fought for independance from a government that they saw as punitive (which is was to Southerners, with slavery nowhere in the picture) just as their grandfathers fought the British for independence...for the same reasons. Why is their living in the Republic strange to you? Wasn't this war fought to force just that?
actually,West Virginia succeeded from Virginia cuz Virginia was pro slavery.,and there were no slaves in what used to be western Virginia.Still think it wasnt about slavery?
@zipsrule West Virginia never had a slave population. They Seceeded from the South because there were almost no plantations in that area due to the mountains and so they were not benefiting from the south.
@DRGW168 The American Civil War was not ONLY about slavery. It was over state's rights and the states right to be sovereign to itself and not to a federal government. Slavery was the topic that sent the southern states over the edge but not THE CAUSE. Many southerners have been quoted from those times in saying they did not support slavery but they did support the states right to choose for itself if it wanted something like slavery or any other controversial law to exist within it's borders.
Indeed: noble gentleman of the Confederacy. These veterans saw hand-to-hand combat, by way of sword and dagger. Such bravery and courage transcends poetic expression in light of Jeffersonian defense and integrity.
Actually, only 10% of Confederates were slave holders. The Yankees were the real racists, from what I have read. They fought the war to preserve the Union.
@44terryberry where the hell did you read that garbage? the south was much more racist than the north and more than half of the confederates were slave owners. it's true that the yankees wanted to preserve the union, but the union government wanted to limit slavery in the U.S. The confederates didn't want limits put on slavery, which is why they seceded in the first place
@zepps88 LOL! Laughable and easily refuted BS. Less than 6% of all white Southerners were slave owners as per the 1860 US Census. Anybody is free to look it up for themselves. The US government offered the Corwin Amendment which would have protected slavery forever. Had it really been all about that, the Southern states could have just re-entered the union and ratified it.
@hungarygator Not to mention all the Non-Whites owning slaves. The last Confederate General to surrender: Cherokee chief Stand Watie was a slave owner. Hell, even free Blacks owned slaves. I laugh out loud when I meet people, who think, all Southerners lived like Scarlett O'Hara and family. Ridiculous. Besides, Yankee factory workers didn't have it much better, than slaves.
Deo Vindice! Some of my countrymen fought for you! :)
most of these guys would have been teenagers when they were in the civil war. it is cool to actually see those soldiers who fought in the civil war via motion pictures opposed to just a photo
@AnalLuxury F.M. Ironmonger was a courier for Gen. R.E. Lee. His grandson and great grandson were members of the Wm. H. Harris Camp 1395 SCV in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the early 1980's. Some authorities claim he was the youngest Confederate soldier at 11 years old.
These gentlemen actually fought in the American Civil War! This is incredible. Priceless footage. Thanks for sharing. I've watched it a number of times, as I have complete respect and admiration for them.
i wish i knew what they were saying, what they sounded like...someone shoulda invented talkies earlier.lol nice vid, id throw some sound in tho...like some fiddle music n such.
@cassidy322 Wish I could just spend a single hour with one of those brave men, listening to all the stories he must have been able to tell. Perhaps in Heaven...
I think it's good for us to see these things as it reminds us of how brief life can be,
