Gerard Butler's voice might not be as "refined" as Crawford's, but IMO, Butler's has more genuine anger/feeling at the climax ("♪You will curse the day...♫").
Just thought I'd add that this scene is one of the only scenes I actually enjoy from the movie/musical - so my opinion is from a non-fan perspective. So basically you ruined the only scene I enjoy in the movie by over-dubbing my favorite part of this scene (which was masterfully done in its original state)...just sayin'

I prefer Gerard Butler to Crawford...to me Crawford's voice is creepy, which I guess is good for Phantom. I still love Butler's voice though.
