  • Translation by Domhnall Mac Dairmada Continued: Gaoth Barra of the Waves In the musical waters of the river lurks the salmon And nearby the lark makes her nest Come the birds of the flock, the starling and the blackbird To your refuge unstinting Gaoth Barra of the Waves I pray to St. Patrick and St. Conal I ask but one boon at the end of my life That my soul should reside among the brown leaves That grow thick on your shores, Gaoth Barra of the Waves
  • Translation by Domhnall Mac Dairmada Gaoth Barra of the Waves The harvest moon is rising into the sky And autumn's yellow sun is setting over the weir The young bees hum amid the old brown leaves In Gaoth Barra of the Woods, Gaoth Barra of the Waves The young winter cattle come slowly down to the fold And the sheep frolic at the approach of the night The wandering stream laughs and shouts In Gaoth Barra of the Woods, Gaoth Barra of the Waves
  • She is the most beautiful voice I've ever heard.

Sounds like an soft wind for me, and in my opinion, Enya is really boring!!

  • Gaelic flows like Danish!

  • @acerb45666555

lol! Not even the Danish understand their own language - it sounds like the porridge got stuck in their throats. Gaelic on the other hand is indeed a beautiful language.

  • @acerb45666555 Hardly! The melody is all different, and the softened approximates and over-long vowels that give Danish its particular sound are not present in Irish at all. The sound of Irish (Moya’s dialect, at least) is made up by lots of palatalisations and ‘soft’ vowels. If anything, Donegal Irish flows like some northern dialects of Norwegian.

  • my best mate's gran used to sing this when she wasn't wondering why the holy mother had stuck her with us.

  • didn't understand a single word & loved every moment

  • yr hyn y mae ganddi lais, Mae `n wir yn syfrdanol mor glir a beautifull

  • As good as anything by Mozart...

  • One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written.

  • So beautiful, almost something heartbreaking about it. I find I'm never quite prepared for it. When she begins singing, it almost brings tears to my eyes

  • I miss the group. Saw them in a small venue in N'Hamp (MA). At the time, they were exploring a more 'New Age' that I didn't care for.

  • wonderful...

    SUN :)

  • Gorgeous but what's she singing about

  • I heard her singing it live once, and she said that "the poet that wrote this was saying that he would prefer for his soul to drift on a leaf down the stream of [the town of] Gaoth Barra and go to heaven." I don't have much Gaelic, but what I was able to get had something to do with the bumblebee's drone (ta na beachogaich dreandann) in the meadows...

  • Beautiful.

  • ... wonderfull Voice , very nice ! ...

  • Love the clarity of the voice. Gorgeous.

  • Maire's voice is like a bell, with no musical accompaniment. Better vocalist than sister Enya; although I admire Enya too.

  • I love this song !!
