What a string of memories - a young foreign girl arriving on the British shore a long, long time ago, swept by a cultural shock wave, taking a course in TV production in London, where her teacher was Kevin Sheldon, also the author of the 5-part series entitled "Stranger on the Shore". Now only a distant dream of moments past...
My SatNav brought me here. I would like to make y'all aware that there is a new publication being issued which contains literally thousands of YouTube comments. It's called 'You Are A Tube!' compiled by Steven Fried PLC.
Hadn't heard this in years and finally did on a video channel. Don't care about the so called ''proper'' english comments...since we can say what we want...and it can be as messy as we want. There is NO such thing as "correct" or "proper" english. And WHO cares! Shush and enjoy. Peace.
I came here because I heard it played by Gertrude Lang on Mr. Holland's Opus. I didn't know the song until I Googled it. OMG it is so beautiful. It said that Bilk wrote it for his daughter.
Karl Pilkington did not bring me here. I looked on Wikipedia for the first UK artist to have a number one in the US and I came here to see. Than again that was from watching Ricky Gervais "Life's Too Short" (S01E04) where he says Right Said Fred were the first to get a #1 since The Beatles. Odd tie in but there you go.
you and me both brother - not too many peple know that movie, but it's a staple inmy household - even my 11 year old has seen it twice (eyes covered when need be)
My Father Bush barrey who passed away on 6.6.06 loved this piece of music and it fills me with sadness when I hear it. God bless you dad. Love John & The family.xxxx
Memories of Ocean View, VA, at Mama's Pizza when i was stationed in Norfolk in the 60's. A bitter-sweet memory. Life was simpler and I met the girl who would spend the rest of her life with me. Here's looking at you, kid. Miss you so much.
Oh dear. Came to listen to the song but your pictures of the beach kicked off the memory of where I was when this song was out. Spent much of that summer at City Island. My cousin had a bungalow off the water's edge and I used to sit out back at sunset and watch the lighthouse blinking on and off. The second picture looked just like it! Wow. Haven't thought of that in years! Thanks for the memory.
this one tune planted me firmly in the sixties and i have never left it the music from that era surpasses the so called music of the twentyfirst century wonderful
May I recommend the book 'A Pop Revolution, the transatlantic music scene 1965 to 1969' by the invisible man. The author is a big fan of this fine instrumental.
@BloodyCatastrophee :) I think Karl is right, the music is quite calming. But, close your eyes, imagine yourself 6ft under, with a tube in your mouth...I would have chosen something else.

When I was 8 years old, in 1962, I was given a Heathkit Crystal Radio for my birthday. I assembled it and wanted to hear what I could. It received AM stations only, ... and from Kansas, I could hear stations in San Francisco, New Orleans, Chicago and Boston. "Stranger on the Shore" was the first music I heard on that radio. It has haunted me ever since, for I loved it but did not know its title. Thanks, Acker Bilk. What a marvelous tune to keepp as a theme for a life.
In the MiraMar bar, in Oceanside, California, me and Billy Joe dancing, a little girl from Oklahoma and a handsome marine, I heard this song for the 1st time, oh my God, I love him still. The romance still comes to mind

@Frankers6 I know exactly what you're feeling. I lost my Dad to cancer 9 yrs ago and every time I hear this tune,it reminds me of him washing his car(1960 Chevy Impala) in front of our childhood home in the early 60's as me and all my brothers would help him. I miss him every day and this music awakes my heart to his memory.
@Frankers6 I was just playing this to my 10 year old and explaining to her what a brilliant clarinetist her granfather was. He used to play this to me when I was a child and this brings back so many memories. My father passed away in 1999 but this always brings him back. Lydia
@Frankers6 I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my Dad in 1968, it was December 23 and his last words to my Mom were, "Put the Champaign on ice. He worked in a town liquor store for 2 hours every night starting in 1955, when we moved to Irvington on the Hudson. He played the trmpet in a band starting in the 40's. When he said walked out the door that December night, he just dropped dead!! He was fine, ate a good dinner, and even ate candy!! Christmas is alway's a reminder. Childhood memories!! CMc
@Frankers6 , only just played this on you tube , sorry for your loss , i lost my dad last christmas , not looking forward to this one ,,, my dad could play the french acordian , he never had a lesson , nor anyone show him how , he was self tought and could play anything by ear and memory , i wish you well , and hope you find comfort in everything that reminds you of him , thats why i am on you tube , i play everything that reminds me of him ,, it is more difficult than i ever thought ,
Firstly I am very sorry for your loss. However, it amazed me to read your comment... My Dad died of cancer back in 2006 and he used to play this on his clarinet to me when I was a small boy. The only reason why I was listening to this just now was because I wanted to remind myself of my Dad.... then I read your comment!
This was one of MY Father's favorite songs, my Mother's too. I always see the innocent days of youth back in the early-mid 1960's & the way life was so much simpler, innocent, romantic, & relatively decent back then. This reminds me of the time of "Camelot" with the Kennedy's in this country too! I'm so glad my parents brought us up listening to this kind of beautiful music! What utter beauty & simplicity! Ahhhh, they truely do not make music like this gem anymore! A great pity!
oh what happy times I had in my youth whilst music like this would be on the radio. My mum and dad were great music fans and our house always seemed filled with people and parties and music and dancing. What I would give to be able to re visit those happy times. They seemed so much more innocent and care free times.Perhaps we should not dwell in the past for too long- it brings on such sadness and longing. Live for today and try to be as happy as poss
A wonderful song. Peaceful, brings you back to a time when life was better, life was secure, people were nice to each other, when the world was a much better place than it is today.
I have always loved this song. It takes me to a time and place in my life that was calm and peaceful. This was my Dad's favorite and he passed away a few weeks ago. This will aways remind me of him....Bye Pop.....Love You.....
when my mom died my dad told me that they would dance to this song and whenever i hear it it just gets me too that happy place and when it ends it just leaves me sad i wish the ending to this song never exists...man words cant discribe how much i loved my mom...i just cant write anymore its just too hard...its hard to swallow....RIP Mom ill always love you...
The memory - Early 60's; Radio station WIBG, Philadelphia; Hy Lit with one of his many monologues about teenage love; Stranger on the Shore playing in the background; PRICELESS. Thanks for the post.
Why is the jazz from the late 50's early 60's always missed on the oldies radio progs some great stuff from then not least this little masterpiece. This is just damn good if you can't like this I think you may be dead already:)
@MrTimothyWatts No it isn't. I listen to music like this when I need to escape from all the bulls**t around me. It is very calming and so beautiful....listen all you want!!!!

CMc

@Aranjuez44 I could not agree with u more.
oh what happy times I had in my youth whilst music like this would be on the radio.
