To shoot in HD, did you have to record onto the specially marked HD MiniDV tapes, or is it possible to shoot HD on the regular MiniDV tapes with this camera? I just ordered one.
Dude I'm not trying to be a D bag, but I have an HV40 and although it is a great camcorder, I'm kind of skeptical thsat you can achieve that look without a DOF adapter that thing you did at 2:56 is almost impossible without atleast a DOF adabter and a 28-50mm 2.8f lens or less.
@pointblizzy Nope, you can achieve that effect easily without any DOF adapter or lens. The camera can do f/stops down to 1.8. Just set the camera mode to Aperture, get it between 1.8 and 3, and then get close to a subject like he did and manually adjust the focus. It's a pain to spin that wheel though.
@beau96080 Oh wow. just tried it..I Never really understood aperture mode, But now it makes more sense. Thanks man. My camera is now better than I thought!!XDXD
the quality looks amazing. however i do notice some sort of choppy lines throughout the video, specifically during fast motions. is this normal or is this a con about the camera. actually i notice this in other vixia camcorders.
I recently bought a HV40. I have not yet used it, but was aware of the 24FPS setting. What is the advantage of shooting at 24 FPS as opposed to the standard 29 (or is it 30?) FPS? Thanks in advance.
erm, i assume 24p is better because that is what actual film registers at....that and 29.97 always give the home-video type of feel but 24 is slower and just better overall. gotta be carefull when you export 24 into after effects or something like that, ur sequence settings might be different
@snaps232425 in 24f, cinema mode. No other settings changed besides that other than manual focus using the little dial on the left side. It's a great camera.
Man I love my HV20 it is rediculasly clear Unbelievable actually I am so happy I made myself broke bying it hahaha but now i am happy i did I still want the Sharp Z series to because it;s so great and so small..
I'm waiting for canon to make a telescope HV50 100x zoom! Optical.
nice intro, the qualitys not great though, i can see that its got a manual focus but this is the only hd camcorder of a resonable price tha records to mini dv cos i wont be able to edit avchd...
Great video! By the way a question... There are two names for this camera. That really makes me confusing. One name is "Legria" HV40 (mainly used in europe) and one name is "VIXIA" as this video shows (america shop). Is it possible that they only changed the brand?
@makeamovie94 I think I remember someone telling me that the difference is that one of the cameras from Europe shots in 25fps instead of 24fps, because the standard fps over there is different from ours.
That's why Shows like Doctor who always seem to have a distinctively different type of look. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that's it.
It's a great camcorder that's for sure. Amazon have some good deals as well.

@pointblizzy I have the HV40, And the manual focus is more than capable of creating a focus pull like this on it's own. Manual focus all the way.

OK, thanks. I would assume that there might be some complications if you try to edit video shot in 24p in say, iMovie or Final Cut Pro/Express.
54Snickers 2 years ago
@54Snickers never had a problem, just use the correct settings in final cut pro.
