There are 3 types of volcanos: Shield Volcano (Hawaii), Cinder Cone, and strata volcano (Vesuvius that covered Pompeii in ash). There are two types of lava: Mafic and Felsic. Mafic is rich in iron and magnesium, or ferromagnesiums. Felsic is rich is Silica (found in Continental mass). Mafic is runny and releases it gases, thereby making it less explosive. Felsic is sluggish and retains its gases, making it very explosive. Stratavolcanos are the "super volcanos". They are Mt. St. Helens, Krakatoa

so it doesn't have to have magma or lava to be an eruption.
