  • Wow.... this video brought me to tears. I was reminded of the utter dispair we faced when my son was diagnosed at 18months. Fast forward and he will be four in six weeks. Intensive ABA is the only way. It has given us the opportunity to pull our darling son back through the doorway from his world into ours. It hasn't been easy, and has come at an emotional and financial cost to us, but I wouldn't change a thing. Thank God for dedicated therapists. I would love to see an update. All the best.

  • Hi - I see this was a few years ago. Wondering how she is progressing and if you still use ABA. My son is 3 and just diagnosed - our therapist starts in two days. Did you do biomedical too?

    *thanks!*

PS - Your video inspires me. I watch when I am overwhelmed and need encouragement and hope! What a sweet girl!

  • I get so inspired when I watch this clip, you have done a great job. My son has been in intensive ABA therapy for 5.5 months now and has made huge progress, he will be 3 next month. I live in the country and took him to the city every week for therapy (300km's way) for the past 5 months but now now we have started home based therapy, however his compliance has gone out the window...any suggestions? also we are aiming for 24 hrs per week as he doesn't have a day sleep, how did you manage 40 hours

  • she's so adorable! its great to see all these improvements after ABA therapy, it just gives hope to all parents of children with autism and those who care about them

  • What a great little girl, my little girl was non-verbal a year ago, non-resposive to our voice and did not play with toys. She was referred to a special needs nursery at the age of 3, using ABA, PEC'S and Music therapy our daughter improved every day. She's now talking, singing, will respond to our voice and is reading and writting. She starts school in September and now has a diagnosis of HFA. She's my world and she has changed so much. Good luck for the future xxx

  • great video! i'm doing ABA and floortime with 2 yo boy diagnosed with PDD. and we're doing a lot of progress! and it's nice to see that all this are really helpful. but the bad thing is - not so many people here in Russia (therapists, teachers...) know ABA

  • Oh my, I cried with tears of joy during this video. What a beautiful, special little girl. Juliette is so adorable! My 5 year old son has Aspergers Syndrome. Just wanted to let you know you are doing a fantastic job with Juliette, may all her wishes come true xxx

  • absolutely beautiful video. thank you so much for sharing this.

  • Great job! I am so happy to be able to see your daughter's progress! What an amazing feat! Congratulations!

  • Very Special and a beautiful little girl!!

I would like to suggest instead of a behaviorial approach to think about now a developmental approach for Her deficits. I am a Mom of two children on the spectrum and an RDI consutlant....my children no longer classify for the Dx of Autism. Behaviorism cannot fill in the social deficits left by Autism....my children were in ABA for 4 years....and I thought we came as far as we could...until I discovered

  • I'm so pleased about the progress of your children. It's a shame so many think of ABA as a therapy rather than a set of principles to develop effective interventions. I agree with many of the goals in RDI (and Floortime), I just adhere to measurement to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. What a fantastic result and so inspiring - I can only imagine how much work you've done. thanks, Mandy

  • Hi Mandy!

Thank you! We did ABA for many years but my children just learned skills and not social functioning of a typical child...so I knew I had to make the switch! You are so dedicated...let me know if you ever want to discuss RDI further...definitely think it would help your daughter! It was lifechanging for both my sons!! You are an awesome Mom!

    Kathy

  • What measurements do you adhere too? I have looked at all the studies concerning behaviorism...and they only show success at acquiring skills...not quality of life.. This is what I noticed once my child graduated from ABA...his deficits were still profound! There is a crisis of adults not being able to llive independantly. Because of RDI my children will not be part of the statistics...

    Best wishes to your family!

  • i am so glad i found this video, my son was diagnosed with severa autism yesterday and i have seen so many children not be able to enjoy normal child activities, this video gives me alittle hope. i will also be doing ABA soon. She looks wonderful.

  • I'm so sorry to hear of your son's diagnosis. I wish you all the best in your journey. Just remember that ABA is not a therapy, but rather a set of principles to use in the development of a program - I hope you can find your way to a good program and access to a BCBA - it never ceases to amaze me what even children with severe deficits can learn with the application of scientific principles to teaching. It is a very challenging time, I know, but there's good reason for hope. Take care, Mandy

  • So beautiful...

  • hi there,,, great to see her progress... my son is 21 mths and has been diagnosed with autism. When did u start your daughter on ABA and how many hrs therapy did she receive? Please

  • Hello...my daughter started when she was 25 mths old - it's wonderful you've had such a young diagnosis. I did the majority of her therapy for the first year and she did receive 40+ hours per week, but I know a lot more now than I did and I would have focussed on away from the table therapy had I known then what I know now. I believe Lovaas said "every waking hour" but then I had a daughter who was severe and needed a lot of help! Best of luck!

  • hi, my son is 5 years and at first I can't belive the ABA WILL HELP he just started on the program but just looking your video HELP ME A LOT THANKS FOR SHARE sorry if my gramma its no good but I'M MEXICAN AND I TRY, I REALLY LOVE YOUR VIDEO THANKS

  • Unbelievable....

  • wow. I was so scared my son my be autistic but not severely. I felt good after watching this. Been up since 2 in the morning til now 9pm researching, like i've been for 4 days. I recently noticed he started doing sign language consistently. Id teach him as a baby but he'd do sometimes. Im thinking he struggling to share something with me. He cant have it if he remembers that. He acts and talks normal, he just likes rotating objects. I would always trace objects with circles with his hands b4.idk

  • Thank you so much for sharing. This just solidifies what I do for a living and why I do it. I am proud to be an ABA therapist.

  • My wife and I are parents to a 4-year-old boy with autism. He is verbal, but has issues with expressive language and sensory processing. We have used picture-based communication tools with him, and have had some success, but got a little frustrated carrying around notebooks and plastic magnet boards. So, we made our own iPhone/iPod app, called "iPrompts"! Google it if you're so inclined! We use it regularly for visual schedules, timers, and choices while on the go! Our therapists use it too.

  • Hi, we're using iprompts for many things in Juliette's program now...thanks for the "prompt"! We use the schedules for for narrative re-tell, before and after concepts, what, who, where etc, there are lots of goals it can be used with even with fully verbal children ...it's a great tool.. thanks again.

  • amazing, just amazing!

  • Thank you for such an inspirational video. I was moved to tears and am so very happy for you, your family, and of course--sweet Juliette.

  • Yea Julliette!! I love watching these!! I did ABA with children for a short time and loved every minute of it..I wish her continued success! :)

  • Many thanks Michelle - it's been quite a journey - and not over by any means :-)

  • Thanks so much for posting this =] I'm hoping to start an ABA master's program next year and seeing videos like this is a real inspiration!

  • The industry needs people with passion and motivation - go for it - it's an amazing field to work in - never a dull day!

  • i am so happy for your little girl. i worked ABA with a 7 year old girl who i fell in love with. she was violent, petite, non verbal, abusive, tortured in my own world, and had a loving spirit like i have never seen in anyone else. i dont know where she is now, but in the year i worked with her she made very little progress. her parents and our team tried everything. one day i know she will be reached like Juliette.

  • Thank you so much for your comments. As I learn more and work with more children I'm more and more amazed at what can be taught with patience and time and of course good program advisers and great therapists. The dedication of some of the people in this field is extraordinary and without them of course we would still be living a nightmare. Instead we're on a journey to help others. Thanks for your comments and all the best to you.

  • Thanks for uploading!!! This is the most beautiful educative video. :) Can I ask you something, after DTT treatments, did your daughter find difficulties in generalizing the acquired skills and did you use DTT to help her in social and emotional development areas as well? I wish Juliette a wonderful childhood!

  • Hi there - no Juliette has always generalised well - mind you, I've done nothing but work to do that for the past 3 years. Natural environment teaching is extremely important and good advisors will use cusp analysis to teach skills that will be frequently used in the natural environment with natural reinforcement - so no, she has and continues to generalise well - but not by luck, by lots and lots of hard work. Lovaas said it best - in EI therapy should be every waking moment.

  • Thanks for posting the video. I have one son with a diagnosis of asd, also regressed (its so hard when that happens I think) and another who is looking like he is on the spectrum but no real regression yet except with food and social. Thanks for posting this. We are about to start aba and also pecs... :)

  • Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I hope both of your boys are going well - I own an EI centre now and we are watching lots of children making fantastic progress - I hope your boys have access to good advisors and therapists. Wishing you all the best, Mandy

  • hi, would like to ask you, how did you teach her how to say yes and no? when to say yes and no? i have a 4 year old daughter asd, up until now she don't know the difference between yes and no. very slow progress..i feel bad about it...thanks for the video. helped me to gain hope again.very beautiful video..

  • It's about reinforcement (positive and negative) and good use of fading procedures. For yes, find a very powerful reinforcer and ask, "do you want this"? - use most to least prompting - prompt "yes" - you may need to accept an approximation of yes and later shape the articulation. For no, it's the opposite - this is negative reinforcement. Hold something your daughter doesn't like and ask, do you want this? Prompt "No" as soon as she approximates no, put the object away from her quickly.

  • most beautiful video ever!!! I want to use this in trainings as it sums up all the therapies so well!!!

  • thanks very much - 2 years on from this - we do most of our therapy in a natural environment but we would never have gotten to this without a lot of what's in the video. I just wish I knew back then what I know now about how to use DTT and still keep a child flexible - thanks again

  • She sure is an angel :)

  • This is fabulous! I have a 3 year old son with pdd-nos, and after about 8 months of intense therapy (35hours a week) including aba, he has like Juliette made HUGE improvements, God Bless, and great job!

  • Your little girl has come a long way I use to work with preschool age children with autism in a mainstreem preschool and I'm friends with one of the childrens mothers. Its amazing to see her walk on the grass and play at beach u must be so proud of her. How is she doing now.
