After the steel mill was built, Gary was just a place to go to work. People had to live somewhere between shifts. The mills exploited Ameican workers and paid them the least they could while extracting the most work they could possibly get out of them. When the trade unions became strong and demanded fairer pay. The companies moved outside of America where they could now exploit people other than Americans. I never realized that there are wild deer in Gary. That is pretty cool. Go Gary!!
i was born and raised on the south side of chicago and visited (and still visit) relatives in two of the cities leepacoindusrtries focus on,gary/east chicago,indiana and east st. louis,illinois. while the decay portrayed in these clips are true,these cities as a whole doesn't look half as bad as these clips make them look! especially east st. louis. i've visited both towns 2 or 3 times a year each since i was a child and has never had any problems with anyone in these places.

Martin Katz in the 1967 election , defeating him in the primary. when the other candidate split the white vote. He won the general election becoming the city's first black mayor. Word on the street was Hatcher felt Gary's white old guard could go to hell if they did not want to work with him. So the honkies left and took their money with them.
So we ended up with a predominately black city with a black government left to fend for themselves with no finances. Not to sound racist but in a nut shell the new black inter structure politically bit the hands that we're feeding them and this was the result of Gary.

There are some good things about Gary. It has a lot of potential. The far west side of the city is made up of respectable black middle class families. Well kept homes, nice cars, well dressed people. It is hard to say that the entire city is horrible. Most of these shots appear to be from the old core of the city, the near west side, the near east side, and some nature shots out in Miller Beach.
Thank Mayor Hatcher, thank "whiteflight", thank Mayor King, thank (black) voter apathy, thank disinvestment, thank U.S. Steel for shirking it's tax responsibilities. There's plenty of thanks (read blame) to go around. Ghost Towns don't happen in a vacuum; they come about because of the failure of a wide variety people.

There are some good things about Gary. It has a lot of potential. The far west side of the city is made up of respectable black middle class families. Well kept homes, nice cars, well dressed people. It is hard to say that the entire city is horrible. Most of these shots appear to be from the old core of the city, the near west side, the near east side, and some nature shots out in Miller Beach.

cooling tower is not even close to Gary. That is Mt.Baldy [part of National Lake shore]with the NIPSCO
coal fueled plant cooling tower in the background,located in Michigan City ,In

Thank Mayor Hatcher, thank "whiteflight", thank Mayor King, thank (black) voter apathy, thank disinvestment, thank U.S. Steel for shirking it's tax responsibilities. There's plenty of thanks (read blame) to go around. Ghost Towns don't happen in a vacuum; they come about because of the failure of a wide variety people.

it almost makes me wonder....if obama was to win the election, would "white people" take a white flight to another country...hell, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if all of the "white people"...lol...would board a rocket ship and try to inhabit or "DISCOVER" another planet...
