I'm confused too. Ubuntu TV will be a HTPC program, where you can store your movies, and other stuff, or it will be just a program that you can rent, see the TV guide, and watch You Tube videos?
I'm confused too. Ubuntu TV will be a HTPC program, where you can store your movies, and other stuff, or it will be just a program that you can rent, see the TV guide, and watch You Tube videos?
If it has BBC channels then it's illegal to use in the UK (without a TV licence). And I'm sure the BBC will soon build a database of IP address so that they can auto-fine everyone without a TV licence using their new online TV services. I will not use this unless there's a way to delete the BBC channels to escape the enforced fines of the future.
@J2897Tutorials nice idea but wont work, a tv licence covers every digital device that can receive a input so mobile phones, radio,pc monitor, nintedno ds, mp3 players you name it ...there has even been cases where folk only own a old green screen monitor and the bbc tried to sue em...tv licence even includes broadband and 3g signals so yea techniclly ur paying for it twice
@cyberboy109 You only need a TV Licence to watch BBC channels. If you never watch BBC channels live from your device, then you do not require a TV Licence. Search YouTube for "TV Licence". You'll be amazed what rights you still have left. Here's a funny one to start with...
@J2897Tutorials It wont let me post up the link but basicly there's been cases where they have teamed up with local internet providers to prove that they have been watching a bbc program and got fined...its gonna get harder and harder to avoid it
There is no plans for it to be a settop or built into a tv. but then again if its open source that option is is open if developers decide to do so, much like Boxee which is based on XBMC code was put into a Boxee Box. You should check out the Rasberry Pi which is a mini computer for $25 and runs XBMC nicely..
It's got alot of work until its seriously ready to compete against the bigger competitors and I'm not just talking about M$ Media Center Im referring to XBMC and MYTHTV which don't require me to have to have a whole desktop installed to run..
I'd rather just watch Netflix right on my puter! I don't own a tv and haven't for 7+ years! Commercials are what got me to throw the tv out! Even Hulu is banned in my home!
No brain-washing allowed in our home... but then again, if you want to get technical... even movies are brain-washing. They set a way of life in the movies and we little Earth-dwellers take it in and end up living our lives the way it is in movies. Crazy!
@iPwn2010 Apple is no better than Microsoft. They're both spy happy companies as is google. Apple can video record you right from your computer and record voice without you even knowing. Same for windows machines that also incorporate cameras and mics into their hardware. Linux is it for me!
Is this the BEST IDEA EVER OR WHAT. Finally canonical has got it down trying to budge their way into different markets(even though I still have to use WinBlows for visual studio). When it is finally released and stable I will totally try this out.
a) Games run under PlayOnLinux, not all perfect but then games should already be being compiled for Linux and Mac, they all use the same hardware now.
b) It's not a re-branded box already on the market. Canonical want their software inside the TV like Freeview if you're familiar with that.
c) Unity is fine for desktops. At its heard it's a dock (OS X), with a Start Menu built in (Windows). It has all the interface features you could have and the old stuff (Cube etc.) still work with GUI tweaking
maybe I'm just used to Ubuntu 10.04LTS, but Gnome2 is much better in terms of functionality and customization, and much worse in terms of resource-guzzling, annoying eye candy - which is definitely a good thing.
"It's that the games aren't compatible with Linux." We're seeing improvements with aftermarket gadgets providing Linux drivers, but it's still a problem. Right now I'm down to one hardware (my audio D/A converter) and one software (the majestic Reaper audio workstation) keeping me in Windows. How hard is it, really, for a company to provide Linux drivers? Or a Linux version of something that works in Windows and OSX?
I'm a both a Mac and PC user, BUT I've been using Ubuntu for the past 3 days and I absolutely love it! Still learning the environment, but I really like it! :D
@MrJPVERCETTI Beauty thing about it is... er one of the beauty things about it is you can make your Ubuntu Environment look like either MacOS, Windows or both! ALL for free! :D
Question: With the Boxee box already been released and in the market (Note: it is quite clearly based around the same code due to the use of the remote control), do you feel that you have more of a chance against the likes of Microsoft and their media centre due to your market position?
"Cuttest remote ever" That remote has been out for over a year with Boxee Box. Speaking of Boxee Box, they will soon release a usb adapter for cable tv and over the air hd stations. I don't understand why Ubuntu came into the game years after Windows Media Center, XMB, Boxee, Roku, Google TV...they have so much to catch up with.
@theRudy132 not entirely, Linux is compatible with open source graphics and sound, that's a linux thing not the software developers producing for the minority of users.
Would agree though that realistically that's all that holds Linux back from going all the way. And that's coming from a 98% full time Windows user since the first Windows
For everything other then most gaming and some high end stuff, Linux is more the capable and has alternatives.
@theRudy132 Actually you are totally right...I guess I didn't write that down correctly.
I'm a Linux user myself for years now,Rolling with Arch-Linux as my main OS for like two 2 years, now that I had a PC upgrade though I just need to play all these games so Windows is like my main OS again.

@Interkirilos Well done, your humility is refreshing. Being a user of Linux, I gather you are well aware of Wine and do not need any more pointers there, so can I offer some other advice. I doubt it helps, but I used to email the publisher and let them know that I have bought their game, but that my gaming experience would be enhanced if it could run on Linux, either native or by Wine.
I used past tense, because now, It's either with Wine, or PS3. if neither, then no purchase.
@theRudy132 and in Soviet Russia, games play you :)
Linux distributions have up until very recently been considered platforms for professionals (just like OSX is a platform for bad professionals), so it's no wonder games for Linux/Mac didn't get past the "Solitaire" stage for a very long time.
besides, Windows is still a market-leading OS in terms of percentage of home users (who are potential gamers).
