oh my god, that was crushing. :( why in the .... did his friend throw this man's fortune away stating that he knew for a fact, when he obviously had no idea?? pain.
This guy had a huge clue that his friend was wrong that I think many would over look. If you listen to the audience cheer after he gives the correct answer for admiral Nelson there is a lot of cheering from lots of people, but after his friend gives advice he believes is fact Rudy says "my man" and barley any of the audience responded.
He had about 20 seconds left on that phone a friend. I would ask him how sure you are and how do you know it. I bet that comedian friend would say that he just saw it somewhere out of his ass which would be a red flag. 250 K is a lot of money and phone a friend could be useless on that level unless it's a good one.
This is somewhat of a trick question to me. When you think of Michael Jackson's videos, Thriller is the one that comes to mind and Landis directed that, as Philbin explained. I made the same mistake when the choices came up.
I thought that Lawrence Caplan missed his 1/2 million question after Mark. I was amazed that someone as bright as Mark could miss such an easy question.
Yeah..Mark McDermott was first, Lawrence Caplan was second, Rudy Reber was third, and Kati Knudsen was after him (first woman to miss the $500K question, too).
3:41-3:46, it makes me laugh a lot to say, "Ah, Durst, you dog", (ha, ha, (laughter), I wished his phone-a-friend could've said C: Martin Scorsese, because if at the part of 3:34, that would've been nice if he had won $500,000, as though I wish he really had won $1 Million or walk with $500,000, but, laugh at 3:41-3:46 to say, "Ah, Durst, you dog", (ha, ha, laughter), I think I'd go back in time one day and fix his mistake so he could win $1 Million, but would he win it?
hahahaha. at the very end did u notice how he said "this is enough to keep me out of telemarketing" well hes the manager at the georgia fop center in augusta and guess what hes doin? yup. telemarketing
But think about it this way - the millionaire contestant wouldn't have guessed it right anyways (he had no clue what right answer was), and there were 4 options.
it's a trick question because John Landis in fact did direct 1983 "Thriller" for Michael Jackson, and this is probably what his friend was thinking about and that's the reason he was so confident. A classic "bummer".
Executive producer Michael Davies used this question to teach how to NOT use Phone A Friend. Though he claims Rudy simply trusted Will without asking for certainty, Rudy DID ask if Will was sure...twice.
OUCH! I remember watching this, I was hoping that he would go all the way. Painful to watch.
I remember there was some woman who got the $500,000 question wrong, but she acted like an idiot throughout the entire show and was a complete ass to Regis. I was glad about that loss.
Watching this clip again: 1. Don't remember Regis being that stunned; 2. Will Durst had to be thinking of Thriller. Landis is the only one you associate with Jackson videos. 3. I suppose I would have done the same thing if a lifeline was that confident, though I would like to think I might have taken a little time on the decision.
Whoops...didn't mean to do that. Omg Will cost him $218,000

Actually, MJ's had a long history with those said Hollywood figures:
Scorsese directed "Bad" (obviously)...
Landis directed "Thriller" (need I say more?)...
Spielberg guest starred in "Moonwalker"...
and Coppola worked with him on "Captain EO"...
Leave it to somebody like Will Durst to be one of the many to tarnish hiss reputation...
