A day before this race, Ernie Irvan crashed at this track while driving his own then-Busch car in a practice session for that race. His final race took place at Watking Glen a week before this.
He would announced his retirement which was surrounded by his family in a tearful conference at Darlington on September 3rd two days before the Southern 500 Labour Day race.
Thank you so much for posting these 1999 races. This brings back fond memories of DJ's championship run, a talented young Tony Stewart, and the revival of the Intimidator as Earnhardt battles rival Jeff Gordon and Bobby Labonte for one of the greatest races in Michigan speedway's history. P.S. Could you please also upload the 1999 DieHard 500 at Talladega?
Funny thing is I would have that race if A) I would have set the VCR that day and B) didn't have to go to my cousin's birthday... I would have rather have watched the race... But my FAMILY had other ideas...... damn them.
Benny didn't go to Watkins Glen the previous week. I think he was sick. However, someone in the broadcast crew called Benny during the race and put him on the air. This lead to Benny basically doing we all wish we could do, analyze oart of a race from his couch.
I think the reason he was wearing sunglasses is because he had eye surgery the previous week. I remember him analyzing part of the race from his couch as well, and I do believe that eye surgery was the reason he didn't go to the Glen.

I loved Dale Jarrett's 1999 helmet design, one of the best I may say

Why is Benny wearing sunglasses? Also, Bob says welcome back to him? Is there a story about that?
