I was working as an usher at the Village Theatre in Westwood. United Artists was previewing Wilder's latest film "Avanti" and it was not going well. There were some walkouts. In the middle I see Mr. Wilder pacing up and down in the lobby not looking happy. In fact, looking grim. "Excuse me, Mr. Wilder" I said approaching him bravely. "I like your film because it reminds me of the work you did with Lubitsch." He all but grabs me. "Thank you, sir", he smiles, taking my hand, "Thank you!"
You should start by giving them a piece of paper at the start of the lecture, that way everybody can follow what you are saying as you are saying it. I couldn't follow the exercise.
He has a great interview where he explains this in detail, and other cool stuff, in The Paris Review Interviews, vol. 1 (2006). This guy started with nothing and worked very HARD. He didn't even speak English when he got here. His mother and grandmother were killed in the Holocaust too.
Wilder is here talking about a scene from "The Merry Widow", not as he states, "The Smiling Liutenant". Both are great films recently re issued on dvd and highly recommended.
