  • lol this is great. notice that second trick how he throws the cards down "from the bottom" is really the top.

  • 4:20 that sly bastard is folding the corner :P

  • he is soooo swift....what a slight of hand at 2:35 :)

  • 2:35, look at ricky jay's hands ;)

  • At 4:05 Ricky Jay increases the bend that Arsenio put there with his pinky. I think Ricky wanted it to be even more pronounced.

  • You can see his right hand bend the card and his right hand also unbends the other card a few seconds later

  • This proves that the classics, if well done, can still seem fresh and very entertaining.

  • 2:35 smooth sleit of hand

  • at 2:37 you see jay go back into the deck and grab the right card.

  • @shatwood agreed, but it's because that's what you are looking for. Put yourself in Arsenio's position, you would have to be a good host, not burn the guests hands looking for the switch. You have to admit, though, Rick Jay is amazingly impressive at what he does...

Did you also pick the switch when he bends the corner on the Red Queen, it's barely noticeable.

  • @bobafett5926

I only mention it because I have no friggin clue as to how jay does any of his tricks, and yet here, I was able to see his sleight of hand. Its been the only time thus far. No, i did not see him bend the corner on the queen.

  • Comment removed

  • @shatwood again, agreed. Watch his right hand at 4:19 just after he drops the Red Queen with his left hand and the ring finger of his right hand bends the corner of the Black card, i still can't tell how he "unbends" the corner of the Red Queen.

  • @bobafett5926 At 4.23 he moves his right had back a bit and u can see him unbend the card

  • @bobafett5926 well it could be modified card being able to be undent :).

  • Ricky Jay's Switch is PERFECTION.

  • "I'M APPROACHIIING THE THUMB" XDDDD

  • Okay, that bent card switch was the smoothest thing I've ever seen

  • He loves malini! He mentions him all the time.

  • Switch @ 2:35 from the top of the deck

  • Awesomeness - Took me a couple times to see the Switch, but he did it amost seemlessly.

  • US players are able to play real poker on pokerview

  • 2 people who are brilliant at what they do

  • The guy played a villain in a Bond movie :-)

  • dont wanna burst eveyrones magic bubble ,but at 2:34 he switches the card

  • @hamelete few bubbles have been burst. that's a top switch.

  • @Vinco top change to be technical xD. As well the glimpse was amazing, invisible literally. Great tricks anyway and the host is a funny person

  • @Vinco Hate to burst your bubble, but that's called a top change. Now fuck off and let us bathe in the beauty that is Ricky Jay.

  • @FunnyCowboyDance ...i understand that i got the name wrong, but what did i do for you to tell me to fuck off?

  • @hamelete Well let's be honest now: you did want to burst everyone's bubble. In fact, you took great relish in bursting everyone's bubble.

  • you know Arsenion was serious when he was like Dayum man!

  • Great post! That is really cool. I have NO idea how he does it.

  • yes.. agree with slowgoman. he's fast.

  • look at 2:30- 2:45........... notice at 2:35 how he brings the card that he is holding back to the deck and switches it with another when he says "and wut a fine job hes done"

  • Lovely top switch and superb misdirection!

  • m r ricky jay DAAAMN MAAN! lol

  • is this man still going shows?

  • "thats why i have alot of houses and real estate" HA HA lol priceless

  • maybe its this bent corner your looking at lol then it changes haha so funny

  • 2:38

  • I saw this guy do a trick called the 652 club. Best trick I ever saw.

  • @diccond

maybe u mean "sam the bellhop" (654 club) it's a trick of Bill Malone, not Jay

  • @diccond no i belive your talking about bill malones sam the belhop and the 654 club.

  • Every funny (yet more subtle, intelligent joke) Ricky made was completely lost on Arsenio and his audience of morons. Yet the silly, stupid shit that Arsenio said got big laughs. What a shocker. And you folks repeating Arsenio's lines (here on youtube) followed by "what a great line" ---- ugh. YOIU ARE FUCKING IDIOTS. Please do not breed. We need to rid the planet of your kind.

  • @weircali lol priceless! You're bagging on all the "idiots" repeating Arsenio's line, yet they seem to know how to spell! "Every funny...YOIU.." Wow, I think it's YOU that should not breed. Fuckin brainless numb-nut people, I swear...

  • OMG! William Barnett on the left! What is that actor's name?

  • that's amazing how he improvised mid trick cos after seeing it was tampered with and how he immediately decided to bend the black card and straighten the red card in turn to fool the fooler so to speak

  • @Smeagollum86 I believe Arsenio was in on the trick at that point. When three card monte is done often there is a rube involved. The performer will pretend to not notice the rube hes playing marking the card in some way and then gets taken. This is done to convince the "sucker" they have an advantage so that they will step in and play wagering big money. Of course by then they've switched out the marked card. Ricky does it so perfect and quick here with Arsenio as his rube and us as the suckers!

  • @AlexDeLargeLives I think Arsenio was in on the trick to a point. I think that Jay told him to mark the card and make his picks based on that. I don't think Jay told him that he was going to switch which card was bent. At any rate, Jay is a fantastic showman. I'd love to see him live.

  • Mr.ricky jay,DAMN man

    lol

  • 2:39 such a smooth card switch. gotta remember that

  • Jay got him again with the classic switch, works great for 2 card monte I must say.

  • at 4:21 he bends the black card and at 4:24 he bends the red card back to normal

  • card switch at 2:34

  • @piggemz and done very well. that's why it's called . .card manipulation.

  • @colininla kk

  • Damn what a fan at 1:42.

  • Wow! This is an excellent video. You see a really great magician in action. Watch how quick Ricky Jay switches the 8 of hearts for the 5 of hearts. It was a micro-second and so smooth. Incredible. The guy has fingers of lightening! But, I don't understand how the second group of tricks are done, with only 3 cards. But, if you look close you can see how super quick he bends the corner of a card. I'm totally impressed. .... Arsenio is one funny man!

  • I know. He's a master at misdirection.

  • He is awesome! hehe at 2:36 he is switching cards ;)

  • Thats a nice handeling of "remember and forget".

  • really good trick, having the advantage of rewinding and looking at the trick u see the movements, but first watch was really good never seen the switch at 2.36 at first go.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!

  • He's such a great magician!!! Wonderful!

  • I love the bent corner, but mainly because of it's history. Ricky Jay studied under Dai Vernon. Dai Vernon's bible when it came to card magic was "The Expert at the Card Table." In said book, Vernon details the exact bent corner effect. Amazing how magic from 1902 comes back to amaze late in the century, and indeed beyond said century.

  • Are you saying Vernon wrote EATCT? I thought it was like someone named like Erdnase (a pseudonym). Sorry, if I'm misunderstanding you.

  • @superchef78 No, he studied it for years starting out.

  • Do you think Expert at the Card Table is hard to understand? I do. The moves definitely aren't for beginners IMO.

  • Comment removed

  • I was referring to 2 card monte (the effect performed by David Blaine). Thanks for the insight and fruitful input, though. I will also recommend you Expert Card Technique, also by Braue and Hugard (I believe).

  • @superchef78

I learned three-card monte from Expert at the Card Table and it's been my opening trick for years, although I've since learned a better method of Mexican Turnover. (It was described to me over the phone by a blind poker cheat!)

If you're new to card magic, however, the best book ever written for beginners is The Royal Road to Card Magic by Jean Hugard and Fredrick Breau. Study that book from cover to cover, then move on to Expert at the Card Table.

  • The one with the corner is sick ... if he really bents over the corner of another card while erasing the corner on the other card than thats fucking sick

  • 2:36 - He swaps the cards! But i cannot tell how he picked them up at first place...

  • man the top change has got to be one of the best changes there is

  • @nixonmendeed idiot

  • 2:36 he take an other card :P

  • whatever happened to arsenio?

  • Genius

  • Amazing stuff, thanks for uploading this rare gem.

  • Completely fooled. I rest my case.

  • ricky jay is the legenddary card mster ^_^

  • level 100 magician Ricky Jay, rolls a natural 20 at bluff every turn

  • "I know it don't matter!"

    Such a great line :)

  • 2:34.......taking another card

  • 2:35 he switches the cardes!

  • If he really did the last one with a normal deck of cards this guy is sick .

  • Ricky Jay acted in the series FlashForwad Sci movie

he is pretty old but got the talent of acting too!!!

  • @BestThought He was Flosso/Uncle Teddy.

  • that's such an old switch trick lol look at the switch at 2:35 while say'ing well fine the job is done and roll his head to the other side ppl don't notice he lay's the 8 of hearts on top of the deck and pull the 5 of hearts from the bottom of the deck where he placed it when he say's "ppl are thinking i am looking into the cards" look after that he place's the cards how he wants it and that was the hole trick:p

  • This just seperated you from magicians =)

"Magicians never reveal their or other magicians tricks"

Let people believe this is magic, thats out point ^^

  • alot of these tricks are easy to do..

its not so much the tricks

its the way he can talk and act which makes the tricks seem more amazing.

    hes an amazing magician

  • danm how'd he do that!!!!!

  • I find the last stuff most unbelievable.. The other stuff is quite easy to do, just learn a lot of different shuffles and you can make it easy by remembering some basic math.. But the last trick really required skill and sleight of hand which I love XD

  • @piskapiskapiska, he always refers to ancient times when introducing his card tricks

  • I really thought Arsenio was gonna get him ... Damn Man you are good!!!

  • mr ricky jay DAMN MAN!!!

  • i dont understand his thumb jokes, can anyone explain?

  • In 'Old English' times, to stick your thumb at someone, or to bite it at someone was an insult... Much like flippin' the bird today. At least I think thats what it was... Not entirely sure!

  • It's just in certain cultures showing your thumb to someone is insulting.

  • yep ricy jay and his 52 asstaints he very good with every objects and tage illusion ideas he on doug henning illusion special on nbc and david copperfield cbs special too an in moies and the x files tv seris and 007 movie with pirce bronson as 007 cool james bond who was a 007 james bond idea mystery moie magic on rematon steel with mrs hart and tv pepsi or coke on a train ninja ideas

  • 2:35 The switch

  • 5:03

  • HAHAHAHAH

  • that "bent card" was staged...Ricky told Arsenio, backstage, to do that before he went on

  • @JamesKoutz013

Oh my Gosh, you are so smart!

  • yeas but dham quick

  • at 2:34 - 2:36 you can see him swap cards

  • good eye

  • yup he switched it

  • explain the 3 card monte.. with the bent card!!

  • his sleight of hand is good so when he brings the 3 cards together he bends anotehr card and fixes the red one

  • @manuel16janica both cards were bent before hand. when he was holding them in his hand he unbent the queen, and bent the other card.

  • incorrect, he bent the black card while it was sitting on the table when he was pattering with arsenio

  • So simple but great. Ricky Jay is the master

  • I think it's pretty much beyond debate. Ricky Jay is the fucking master and commander of the card trick. I've never , ever, seen anybody close.

  • Then you obviously have never ever seen anyone else besides Ricky Jay. There are other magicians out there with big names that are the same level as Ricky Jay. The only reason why Ricky Jay is so good is because he was taught by none other than Dai Vernon, history's best card magician. He's the one who took card magic to the level as we know it today.

So you being so ignorant, simply means you don't know anyone else but Ricky Jay.

He's not the best there is. He's one of the best.

  • I've seen several other magicians try to manipulate cards this way. David copperfield is decent, but still can't touch this. Criss Angel cannot either. I'll admit that I've never heard of 'Dai Vernon' but you cannot deny that most of the times the APPRENTICE out-does the master.

Just because I'm not an obsessive asian card wannabe doesn't mean I'm ignorant. Then again, you're cool in my book because you look like Bobby Lee. So just settle down, little guy.

  • Who ever said I was being obessive? I just know other card magicians. You can hardly call David Copperfield a card magician seeing 3/4th of his shows all revolve around big stage magic. Criss Angel too, doesn't only specialize in cards.

By saying; "The apprentice out-does the master" you clearly don't know who Dai Vernon is, yet you claim you effectively know Ricky Jay's the best there is?

He even managed to fool Houdini with his cards.

E.g.: Go look up Lee Asher, who invented Thunderbird.

  • Quote: "There are other magicians out there with big names who are at the same level as Ricky Jay". Who?

I'd define 'Big Name' as: Was in a prime time movie, or, has his own television show, or, headlines in vegas regularly.

So feel free to let me know, but remember, this is just stupid youtube argument dude, nothing to get all worked up about.

  • Lee Asher, Dai Vernon (died), David Blaine, Larry Jennings (died), Joshua Jay,...

    The list goes on.

Like I've said, by saying Ricky Jay's the best, is just a personal opinion, it's not a fact. He's not the best, although he's one of the best there is out there. His card-skills are great but that doesn't mean you can't apprehend his level of skill.

And, get worked up on what? You're the one who said: "Hands down, no one's better than Ricky Jay!" -> pretty much a fanboycomment. :D

  • I have to admit, I looked up lee vernon and was pretty impressed. He's not a big name from the looks of it though.

David Blaine on the other hand... His card tricks are the most basic that i've ever seen. I think you were just trying to fill the list. DB sucks the fat one.

So considering that you've stated your opinions of the best, i'll once again state mine. Ricky Jay, FOR THE WIN. The best ever.

  • can we be friends you sound like some one that knows your stuff. i am into card magic for a bit but i only know basic stuff double lift lmao n some others. i want to learn the true greats n learn from them you sound informational. i wanna sink myself into some of the brilliant card magicians that ever lived n you sound like the right person to talk to.

  • Sure.

  • i spotted how he changed the crad from the top of the deck but still amazing trick.. and also when he had to follow the crads is because he does a 3 card monte throw perfectly

  • Spotted it first time, in 2.35 he changes card then turns i down, so camera cant see the new card until revealed.

  • but i think the amazing thing is that he grouped the 8 and 5 on top together without knowing them.

  • "magician from hell stay away from me!" priceless!!!

  • really good trick^^

nobody would see it at the first time

  • funny yup

  • that ricky jay card flick- where he flick or spins it out of the deck, he uses his finger to flick or spin it out

  • dude i just met him yesterday O_o

never even knew who he was until i watched this, now i wish i talked to him a bit longer xD

  • top change:)

  • stop sayin how he does it!!

  • That is a smooth switch; I would never have caught that if someone had not pointed it out.

  • at 2:36 he makes the switch. but he does it good

  • regardless of the method, this is a brilliant trick, primarily because that switch requires exquisite misdirection due to the boldness of the move. Did I hear him say this was a Max Malini effect? I perform this myself (with some slight variation) and it totally fries people.

  • at 2:36 the switch XD

  • dude shut up man for god sake

  • can someone tell me how he controls the two cards

  • somebody can tell me how he is controlling the two cards?

  • no!

  • 2:34 is actually the change. view from 2:33 to 2:36, he swaps the 8 with the 5 which is on the bottom of the deck. very fast. The swap isn't what facinates me...its the control of two cards during the shuffle ^.^

  • i think this trick is caled 3 card monte

  • you can see him do the secret trick at 5:07

  • hahah ! joker

  • 2:36 was the change

  • damn!!!!!!!!!! ur goooooood!!!!!!!

  • you know what, its even more of an impressive trick when you can see the switch like

  • good timing to change it

  • danggg

  • that guy gets RINSED!

  • that black guy is sooo fucking funny. What's his name ?

  • His name is Arsenio Hall.

  • I can see him bending the first one but he's so fast straightening out the other.

  • i know the move he uses but with the dog ear he bends is nice :P

  • OMG REAL MAGIC...SOOO MAGICAL

  • Real magic this is amzaing REAL MAGIC PEOPLE!!

  • at 2:36 he switches cards from the deck, its just he does it so smoothly, you dont notice

  • then howd u notice?

  • mr ricky u are the man

  • arseno played the sucker well with the monte, but he was in on it...

  • Ricky Jay is the man! I use to watch his HBO special religiously, never seen this before! What a shame that we no longer have any proper magic specials on television like we did in the 90s and before (i.e., World's Greatest Magic), instead we're spoon-fed third-rate no-talent TV acts like Criss Angel and David Blaine. Even the new "World Magic Awards" they air are total crap compared to the innovative and amazing specials of decades past. I miss seeing legends like RJ perform. Thanks!

  • Agreed! The latest stuff is rubbish! However I still appreciate some of the David Blaine shows.

  • dat was an amazing intro card trick

  • Keep it to yourself.

  • no shit.
