The William S Mitchell is still currently in use. And does travel the river to some degree. It is Currently the USS. Nightmare a haunted attraction open for the Halloween season each year. Although it is a haunted attraction it still contains and showcases most if not all of the original machinery. It has a rich history which they try to keep alive and I believe some real paranormal activity within. The USS Nightmare/ William S Mitchell is a real jewel and fantastic place to visit and read about.
I highly recommend that anyone interested in the history of these quadruplet dredge boats visit the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, Iowa. The USACE Str. WILLIAM M. BLACK is docked there and all of her machinery is still in place. It makes for an excellent tour!
There were 4 Side-wheel Dustpan Dredges constructed from 1931-1934 in the Marietta Manufacturing Co, Point Pleasant WV Yards. William S Mitchell, William M Black (Museum in Dubuque IA) William Clark (I am still looking for this one) and the Meriwether Lewis (Museum in Brownsville NE). My first Dredgeboat deckhand job was on the Mitchell Dredging the Gasconade Harbor.
wow if i had the money id fix her up as orinagal as i could i love old historic ships even paddle wheelers took part in winning our country paddle wheelers have also served in war ,,,
wow but it still floats she looks like an old double sided paddlewheeler any one know the history of it ,,when was she built was it a passenger ship,,I know it would be ALOT OF WORK but it would be so cool to fix her up and sail her again,,
@Dolphindream15 Technically she does sail, and is fixed up. She's a ghost attraction full of scarers around halloween. I went to a pre-halloween special. Only 10 dollars! It was pretty fun. But yeah lots of fake body bags, clowns and blood.
