The runs down Conrod show that the BMW's 2.3 litre NA engine didn't lose much to a 2.0 litre turbocharged Nissan. But going up Mountain straight was different (no downhill section to give momentum). Bathurst was the only Aussie track where the BMW really had to be driven to its full speed limits and it showed against the more powerful cars.
@lostwill86 Not in 1987 they weren't. The original BMW M3 only had the 2.3L engine. The Evo version that was used in the DTM and around the world from 1989 had the 2.5L engine although this version didn't see the light of day in Australian touring car racing until 1991 when Tony Longhurst's team stopped using the RS500 Sierra's and went back to using the BMW's.
@Holden308 they were beasts! i've a 325i sport pushing about 220bhp its a weapon best car i've ever driven and i've drive 600bhp skylines(my brothers and two)
