@UKwildcatfan1985 before the 90's white people were good at sports then blacks started taking drugs, basketball and American football started discriminating against non-black players, and now you have the teams the way they are today. Wow most of those scores are against single coverage, there is no help coming at all, and a couple times he is wide open... and most of t hese players are slow as hell compared to NBA players these days. His post moves are nice, but the defense looks like shit. Over rated fuckin defense lol.
@Agenthai7 I wanna hear your reasoning on why everyone looks a half step slower than an nonathletic white guy. Defense back then was way over rated other than the 'hard play'.
@H1Cypher Bird had arguably the highest basketball IQ in the game. When you can read the situation, doesn't matter how athletic the opponent is. @hoochymama 2 of the GREATEST! MJ had a ton of dunks while Bird was shooting from all over the court. If you can sky and dunk like MJ it helps the FG %. Bird played with a very bad back for years.Bird laughed and held up his right index finger. "This," he says. The finger is shaped like a boomerang, bent toward his thumb at a 45-degree angle. 2 operations failed to straighten it; he can bend it only halfway to his palm. Search YouTube for these 2

haha watch the ref walk past bird while hes on the floor like he doesnt give a fuck. These days, that would be a flagrant-2, half the celtics bench and all the refs would be surrounding bird asking if hes ok. I miss the old school
@DrmrGuy1979 I never use the term, "just," with very good players.
If you are going to count the sum of parts used to evaluate a great/excellent player, defense must be included. Bird was a good "team defender" at best. At worst, he was a defensive liability.
His name will never be mentioned in conversations about the best defenders of that era. Jordan's will. Pippen's will. Not Bird's. Never.
Before you degrade Bird's defensive skills you'd better watch this video. Look at the rankings and you'll see he was better than you gave him credit for:
@fr6313 Bird was All Defensive Second Team two or three times during his 12 year career in the NBA. Now, that does not make him a great defender. He did have exceptionally quick hands, played the passing lanes well, and was probably much better guarding the post, than the wing.
He had a lot of help (e.g. McHale, Parish, etc.) though, which allowed him to roam/relax as if in a zone. When, on occasion, Bird was assigned the other team's 1st or 2nd scorer, he was beaten badly.
@genericname38 But not a great one. And, for that matter, not a consistently "good" one either (unless, that is, you consider three times in 12 years to be something exceptional - I certainly do not).
There is no evidence to back up the claim that MJ had a bad team around him. He played with two eventual HOF'ers, the ridiculously talented Scottie Pippen, and one of the greatest rebounders in NBA history, Dennis Rodman. Yeah, that must have been terrible.
@ACrazyCommunist Bird's Celltics (as with Magic's Lakers) were stacked from jump street, so Bird's matriculation was much less taxing on him, when compared to the years Jordan and Isiah had to endure on horrible teams. The evidence is listed on their respective rosters.
notice at 0:23 when bird got knocked down no one helped him up. i thought player number 8 was gonna help him up but he just ran quickly to the sideline to inbound the ball.
MJ had the most athletic skill, the largest repertoire of moves, the most clutch moments and is often regarded as being the greatest athlete in all sports. Bird had the strongest work ethic but that will only get you so far against God given talent.
@cosmonautiks Couldn't agree more and all of Bird was one of the most humble men to play. Jordan had video of him in the weight room etc, I like how Bird did not do that often. I look at him not just the greatest to play but you see the mans character through his actions, with all the research I have done he very very rarely complained unless it was his team mates.
see thats what a classy white basketball player does.. he got cheap shotted twice but instead of coming back down the court and starting a fight with another cheap shot. he just straight SHITS on the other team. swagg
@drewdogg1317 As many people might agree with this bro, lets leave race out of this, and I am an Italian-Irish American so if I can do it, I know you can too.
Larry Bird...man, too bad his back problems took him from the game as he had more seasons in him. I like how Bill Laimbeer (after being his usual punk self) gets totally destroyed by Bird for the rest of the game. They even switched defenders on him and Bird ate them up too.
@jrrussell29 : Bird, the greatest non-athletic player of all time. Even with the current "athletes" of today's game, he would still shine and do some "schooling".
@jrrussell29 Just because players today looks more athletic doesn't mean they know how to defend. The league has gotten much softer on defense now as compare to the 80's and 90's era. As Bird has shown in this video, he didn't have to be the most athletic or strongest player on the court to win. All he needed was basketball fundamentals and dead accuracy.
@jrrussell29 Today's defense is much softer. Bird, Magic, MJ and all those other greats had to deal with the hand check. In today's soft game, any average joe can potentially score 40-50 in any given night.
Look at what he did after getting up from the floor -- he just went back to the game, fighting for the win of the game. That's what differentiates great players from good.
@DrmrGuy1979 well, not exactly lol. For an offensive foul, they'd be happy, get cocky, and try and make the other team feel bad by trying to make some big play. Now LARRY, he gets knocked around, and goes on playing his regular game lol
BossSloss is stupid,a player who handled the ball as much as Larry Bird did could never do all this if he couldn't dribble Larry Bird NBA MVP 1984, 1985, 1986
During the 1986 season, when the list of all-stars had just been announced, Bird asked a group of Boston reporters if Laimbeer, who had been an all-star the previous 3 seasons, had been selected again. They informed him that Laimbeer had been left off the squad. Bird deadpanned, "Good, now I won't have to worry about him getting on the bus and saying, ' Hi Larry' and me having to say, ' Fuck you Bill' ".
@ry3304 i dont see it that way bird has to pass more because he couldnt really dribble, mj was a pure scorer plus he didnt have to pass if he could put up 32 a nite
@BossSloss are you fucking stupid? bird was one of the best ball handlers in the league. you don't average 7 assists a game by being a shitty dribbler. MJ was maybe the greatest 1 on 1 player ever, but he doesn't compare to bird as a team player. there's a reason bird almost single handedly took the Cs from out of the playoffs to championship contenders by himself, but jordan's bulls couldn't beat him until he was well past his prime.
Is there anyone in the nba who can defend as dirty as bill laimbeer?

@03life30
Before you degrade Bird's defensive skills you'd better watch this video.

03life30 4 months ago
@03life30 if u make all defensive team, it means you are a good defender.
genericname38 4 months ago
@genericname38 But not a great one. And, for that matter, not a consistently "good" one either (unless, that is, you consider three times in 12 years to be something exceptional - I certainly do not).

Bird was a very good player on a great team. Same with Magic. Their teams were ready-made.
Conversely, Jordan was an excellent player on a mediocre team. Same with Isiah.
03life30 5 months ago
There is no evidence to back up the claim that MJ had a bad team around him. He played with two eventual HOF'ers, the ridiculously talented Scottie Pippen, and one of the greatest rebounders in NBA history, Dennis Rodman. Yeah, that must have been terrible.
ACrazyCommunist 5 months ago
@ACrazyCommunist Bird's Celltics (as with Magic's Lakers) were stacked from jump street, so Bird's matriculation was much less taxing on him, when compared to the years Jordan and Isiah had to endure on horrible teams. The evidence is listed on their respective rosters.
It's not even close.
03life30 5 months ago
notice at 0:23 when bird got knocked down no one helped him up. i thought player number 8 was gonna help him up but he just ran quickly to the sideline to inbound the ball.
total a-holes.

MJ had the most athletic skill, the largest repertoire of moves, the most clutch moments and is often regarded as being the greatest athlete in all sports. Bird had the strongest work ethic but that will only get you so far against God given talent.
cosmonautiks 5 months ago
@cosmonautiks Couldn't agree more and all of Bird was one of the most humble men to play. Jordan had video of him in the weight room etc, I like how Bird did not do that often. I look at him not just the greatest to play but you see the mans character through his actions, with all the research I have done he very very rarely complained unless it was his team mates.

see thats what a classy white basketball player does.. he got cheap shotted twice but instead of coming back down the court and starting a fight with another cheap shot. he just straight SHITS on the other team. swagg

Larry Bird...man, too bad his back problems took him from the game as he had more seasons in him. I like how Bill Laimbeer (after being his usual punk self) gets totally destroyed by Bird for the rest of the game. They even switched defenders on him and Bird ate them up too.
alekesam 5 months ago
overall players now days will kill larry bird..much more athletic
jrrussell29 5 months ago
@jrrussell29 : Bird, the greatest non-athletic player of all time. Even with the current "athletes" of today's game, he would still shine and do some "schooling".
rnasap 5 months ago
@jrrussell29 Just because players today looks more athletic doesn't mean they know how to defend. The league has gotten much softer on defense now as compare to the 80's and 90's era. As Bird has shown in this video, he didn't have to be the most athletic or strongest player on the court to win. All he needed was basketball fundamentals and dead accuracy.
VF5 5 months ago
bird wont keep up to today defense ..too much athleticism
jrrussell29 5 months ago

Only difference between MJ & LB:
MJ could do it all and did so, but only by refusing his teammates
LB could do it all, but oftentimes refused himself FOR his teammates.
Yea, greatest player of all time lols. IF THE GAME WAS 1 ON 1!!!!! ;.
ry3304 5 months ago
@ry3304 i dont see it that way bird has to pass more because he couldnt really dribble, mj was a pure scorer plus he didnt have to pass if he could put up 32 a nite
BossSloss 5 months ago
@BossSloss are you fucking stupid? bird was one of the best ball handlers in the league. you don't average 7 assists a game by being a shitty dribbler. MJ was maybe the greatest 1 on 1 player ever, but he doesn't compare to bird as a team player. there's a reason bird almost single handedly took the Cs from out of the playoffs to championship contenders by himself, but jordan's bulls couldn't beat him until he was well past his prime.
