I am friends with a woman who is a Canadian comedienne who actually met and talked to Bill Hicks. According to her, he was a quiet man (they met back stage at a festival). He was wonderful and intelligent. The stage Bill Hicks was not the off stage Bill Hicks.
Every single person who has ever tried stand-up reveres this tape of Hicks as they know how it feels to be heckled.
Doesn't mean the Bill Hicks on stage was a lie. It's just him amplified. It's a rock show. A performance after all. It's layered comedy. You don't have to agree with everything on the surface of his jokes, hanging on every word he says. But if you actually listen, and watch his act, his emotions, you should get it.

He stuck to his words and didn't give in. Carlin on the other hand...Carlin just glided with the underground tide. You can tell it's an act he puts on on stage. Carlin lacks the passion. But I adore both of them.

I am friends with a woman who is a Canadian comedienne who actually met and talked to Bill Hicks. According to her, he was a quiet man (they met back stage at a festival). He was wonderful and intelligent. The stage Bill Hicks was not the off stage Bill Hicks.
Every single person who has ever tried stand-up reveres this tape of Hicks as they know how it feels to be heckled.

Doesn't mean the Bill Hicks on stage was a lie. It's just him amplified. It's a rock show. A performance after all. It's layered comedy. You don't have to agree with everything on the surface of his jokes, hanging on every word he says. But if you actually listen, and watch his act, his emotions, you should get it.
I feel like he was a hopeless romantic. He played the cynical hater, but the real dude had a big heart. He was always angry because he cared so much.

In terms of satire, black comedy, social-criticism...I favour Bill Hicks rather than George Carlin. Bill had it in his heart, almost like it was his mission to enlighten the masses. He stuck to his words and didn't give in. Carlin on the other hand...Carlin just glided with the underground tide. You can tell it's an act he puts on on stage. Carlin lacks the passion. But I adore both of them.

You're wrong. Carlin was sincere and not acting. The difference is that Carlin was operating on a purely intellectual level. Bill was far more in touch with higher states of consciousness, and thus far more passionate.
