Won't work. Can't work. And the reasons should be obvious. What is needed is a hybrid system such as in some European nations. Of course, they're more evolved and civilized than we in the states, who are still struggling with the utterly stupid idea that if we all just work our asses off and deregulate the economy we'll all do well. Which is such an obviously failed idea that several EU nations are soon to overtake us for average standard of living.

The problem I have with a higher sales tax is that it punishes business owners and entrepreneurs, which are the very core of the economy. Then when those retailers and small business owners go to use some of the money they earned they are taxed a second time. It's better than an income tax, which is irrefutably ridiculous and stupid, but the sales tax solution is certainly not perfect. There must be another way...

I suppose you would not tax purchases of food, would you? Or medical services? Tax education, legal services, travel, hotels, all luxuries.

you shouldnt try to manipulate peoples spending with taxes, just because someone thinks you should or shouldnt spend money on certain things that doesnt mean you should tax them to punish or reward what someone in washington thinks is good or bad. just like taxing interest earned and deducting interest paid is a distortion because the gov thinks it is good for people to borrow and bad to save (which is an insane thinking on several levels).
