just watching that thing while it was in the air is a scary thought. he could have easily have hurt those people standing near/filming. you have to have training, pure and simple.
There is no doubt this guy F'd up, but if u research this story you'll find that he wasn't intending to actually fly it. He had just purchased it and thought he'd try rolling up the throttle while he waited for his Inst. The frictions where still on and he didn't realize what a dangerous spot he was in until it was too late. This is what any Tom/Dick or Harry would look like If they tried to fly with no time in a heli. (even schlusselmensch)
@amj54321 the frictions are small mecanisms installed on the throttle, collective and cyclic that prevents the controls from moving and are activated or deactivated by turning a knob, applying or releasing the pressure of 2 small disk on the guiding slider of both the collective and the cyclic, and the ring on the throttle(like a bottle cap).Making sure the control are loose is part of the preflight check before take off.
And as far as self taught heli pilots, there's been many who figured it out with just the pilot notes although virtually all of them had fixed wing experience. Some guys (and girls) are just bloody naturals sent here to piss off us poor normal bastards. There are not a few instances of pilots being tasked to fly early military ships without a shred of dual.
I can tell you that skilled fixed wing R/C pilots can do credible circuits in the real thing in less than an hour.
As a long time R/C heli pilot I was able to hover, fly a circuit and return to the hover and land a straight 500 within 20 minutes of climbing into it. Had a barrel of fun.
Had a little bit of pressure; if I couldn't fly it within an hour, I had to pay for the time. If I could, the heli outfit picked up the tab.
Hmmmmm, about 100,000 grand for a new Cbi (I don't know if it's[was] new). About 20 bucks for the case of Old Killwalkee (ok, 10bucks) and the 5 dollar bet to 'HOG' from his buddies in the hanger where his old PA-125 sits......"'Come on Hog, you can fly that thar dren thang." PRICELESS
You're telling me it's possible to get your PPL in a week? I mean, i know it depends on whether or not it's a 141 or 61 school, but still, a week to get a PPL? I was in highschool when i started flying and with a 2 year gab in between training, it took me about a year total to get my private, i was only flying about once or twice a week though.
what an idiot, it takes at least a year minimum to get your private pilots license for a fixed wing, single engine, land, much less a rotor rating? cm'on, fuckin rich people
a week eh? so you're gonna go to FL, do 40 hours of flight time with the instructor, 40 hours of ground school, 4 hours of IFR, 2 point cross country, 3 point cross country, 3 point cross country at night, do your pre-solo, first solo, training area solo, croos country solo, get your 10 hours of solo time, do your green ride and then your checkride, all in one week? doubt it, but you go ahead and try and tell me how it goes.
As a pilot, I certainly can attest to the fact that I have seen student helicopter pilots that were able to fly and hover a helicopter in a weeks time, Now, that is not all there is to flying a helicopter as the idiot in this video demonstrated, but yes, one can go through a weeks worth of training and be able to start and fly a helicopter. (of course their CFI would be in the chopper with them) However, I have known people who got their license and were competent enough to solo in 6 weeks time.
Not true at all. I have known many fixed wing pilots who did their ground school and soloed in 2 weeks time. Most of these people went to a flight school and were dedicated to learning to fly and solo to get their license in less than 60 days and I am telling you it can be done. Crap, I fly helicopters and I was able to hover and solo in less than 30 days. My full raining lasted 90 days along with ongoing training. But learning to fly and hover a helicopter in less than 30 days can be done.
The fastest I've seen it done is 21 days...21 consecutive days with perfect weather and an extraordinarily sharp student who did it in minimum hours. National average for fixed wing is 6-12 months and 65 hours. On the other hand, I had a friend who spent 2.5 years and over 120 hours to get licensed.
How hard can it be to jock your brand new little two seater? "This cant be to tricky, hell im an excellent driver.. Let's see, I got my right foot on the accelerator pedal and the left one on the break pedal, a silly looking stick instead of a steering wheel and the stick on my left looks like the handbrake, incompetent fools left it released, check.. "
Hey i know this guy, he was in perfect control of this thing, there was a sudden gust of wind cos it was strong winds that day, and these helis are very unstable, so he shud get some credit...*cough.............coughcoughcoughcoughcough, this is killing mecoughcoughcoughflegmcough
The cameraman can't really criticized the inexperienced pilot. Because if he had any sense he would of dropped the camera and got out of there. No one was safe in the vicinity.
This is a Hughes TH55 off the shelf trainer helo. Attending Army flight school, I received my first phase flight hours in this model. I believe we can all agree this man earned the blockhead of the year award. It's amazing he wasn't killed. John
Doesn't seem real does it? If you saw that wouldn't you expect someone to be at least saying something out of concern for the poor idiot?
